Open Access in Mongolia; Mongolia is a huge land-locked country bordering Russia and China. Its 3 million inhabitants are somewhat isolated geographically and linguistically and by comparative poverty. Language barrier is a big problem even though English and Russian are second foreign languages.

There are currently no OA journals published in Mongolia which are indexed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). However, researchers from Mongolia are found to publish their articles in International Open Access Journals. For example, ~10OA articles have been published with BioMed Central- an STM (Science, Technology and Medicine) publisher which has pioneered the Open Access publishing model – by researchers from the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry, the Ministry of Health, Health Science University of Mongolia (HSUM), National Center of Communicable Diseases (NCCD), State Research Center on Maternal and Child Health (SRCMCH) and the Institute of Veterinary Medicine (IVM), among others.

Enabling Environment edit

The Open Access Resources for Researchers in Mongolia is a guide meant to provide Mongolian researchers with links to helpful Open Access information resources. The project was supported by a fellowship from the American Center for Mongolian Studies (ACMS), a research leave from New York University, and the Mongolian Libraries Consortium (MLC).

EIFL (Electronic Information for Libraries) has been working in Mongolia since 1999. EIFL supported the creation of the Mongolian Libraries Consortium, and through this partnership, libraries in Mongolia are providing access to a wide range of scholarly e-resources. In Mongolia, EIFL has advocated for revisions to the national copyright law to enable libraries to better meet the needs of their end users. EIFL has also engaged with public libraries in Mongolia resulting in an innovative pilot project that is helping libraries meet the information needs of their communities.
