Pelé was born Edson Arantes do Nascimento on 23 October 1940, in Três Corações, Minas Gerais, Brazil, the son of Fluminense footballer Dondinho. He was the elder of two siblings. He was named after the American inventor Thomas Edison His parents decided to remove the "i" and call him "Edson", but there was a mistake on the birth certificate, leading to many documents to show his name as Edison, not Edson as he is called.

His family gave him the nickname "Dico". He did not get the nickname Pele until he started with his school, where he used to pronounce the name of the local Vasco da Gama goalkeeper Bile as Pile. I really admire Pele’s effort in his career. he use to play football with socks stuck together because he was poor as a child but that didn’t stop him from becoming 1 of the best football player of his time. . Pele has never liked his nickname, he says it sounds like "baby-talk". Pele has helped raise millions of pounds for charitable causes including Great Ormond Street and Harlem Street Soccer. Pelé announced his retirement in 1974 but in 1975 agreed to a three-year, $7-million contract with the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League and to promote the game in the United States. He retired after leading the Cosmos to the league championship in 1977.

Pelé was the recipient of the International Peace Award in 1978. In 1980 he was named Athlete of the Century by the French sports publication L’Equipe, and he received the same honor in 1999 from the International Olympic Committee. In 2014 the Pelé Museum opened in Santos, Brazil. In addition to his accomplishments in sports, he published several best-selling autobiographies and starred in several successful documentary and semi-documentary films.
