Javier Rojo is the Dean's Eminent Scholar in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the Indiana University School of Public Health-Bloomington. Previously, Dr. Rojo was the Korvis Professor of Statistics at Oregon State University (OSU), appointed Adjunct Professor at Rice University, appointed to the National Scientific Advisory Committee at Statistical and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute, SAMSI, and at Mathematical Biosciences Institute. He founded the Research Experience for Undergraduates in Statistics (RUSIS) at Rice University and the BioStatistical Laboratory at University of Texas at El Paso.

Education and career

Javier Rojo received his MS degrees in Mathematics from the University of Texas at El Paso and in Statistics from Stanford University. Dr. Rojo earned his PhD in statistics from the University of California, Berkeley, under the supervision of Erich Leo Lehmann. He is interested in survival analysis, partial orders of distribution functions and related inference problems, extreme value theory and tail-heaviness of distributions, nonparametric function estimation, statistical decision theory, random matrices, and dimension reduction techniques. In 2021, Dr. Rojo joined the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics as a Dean's Eminent Scholar at the Indiana University School of Public Health-Bloomington. In 1990, he was an associate professor of statistics at the University of Texas at El Paso where he founded the BioStatistical Laboratory. At Rice University, Javier Rojo created the Research Experience for Undergraduates in Statistics (RUSIS), which received the 2014 AMS Programs that make a difference award. He has held the Seneca C. and Mary B. Weeks endowed Chair of Statistics and Chair of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Nevada. Janvier Rojo has held positions at Sandia Labs, the Rand Corporation, Pacific Gas and Electric, and El Paso Natural Gas Company. He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, the Royal Statistical Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science and is an elected member of the International Statistical Institute.

"The number of Ph.D. degrees earned by Hispanics continues to grow and the diversity of areas within the mathematical and statistical sciences where Hispanics are making headway is also on the increase. In parallel with this growth, the need to have better and more easily available mentorship has increased. The need for institutionalizing mentoring programs for Hispanics and other underrepresented students has never been more critical. SACNAS, for many years, and the Math Alliance in the last few years, has been doing an excellent job in providing a forum for Hispanic and other students to develop their professional skills. It is hoped, however, that more mathematics and statistics departments join these and other associations in providing an environment where Hispanic, and more generally underrepresented, students can receive mentorship and encouragement in pursuing graduate degrees in the mathematical and statistical sciences." - Javier Rojo
