Matthias Grothe (16 May 1978 - 31 October 2017) was a German basketball player and coach.

Grothe began his career with TuS Iserlohn. The Hemer native played in all the youth teams of the club. Der ehemalige Jugendnationalspieler des DBB spielte u. a. in der U22 zusammen mit Dirk Nowitzki.[1]

For Brandt Hagen Matthias Grothe played from 1998 to 2002 116 Bundesliga games. For two years he came back to his home club, which had meanwhile risen to the second Bundesliga for the second time. The self-growth of the TuS Iserlohn changed in 2004 back to the Volme. Grothe played 150 games in a row in five second-league games for Phoenix Hagen, without missing a single game. In 4534 minutes (30 minutes on average per game) he scored 2519 points and managed in 2009 with the firebirds as captain promotion to the basketball league. After a last season in the upper house of German basketball, the native Sauerländer ended his career. At the last home game, a 96: 71 victory against EnBW Ludwigsburg, Matthias Grothe was adopted. His jersey was drawn to the hall ceiling and the number 9 will no longer be awarded in the future at Phoenix Hagen as a sign of appreciation for a deserving athlete, as is customary in particular in the US professional league NBA.


Für Brandt Hagen bestritt Matthias Grothe von 1998 bis 2002 116 Bundesligaspiele. Für zwei Jahre kam er anschließend zurück zu seinem Heimatverein, der inzwischen zum zweiten Mal in die zweite Bundesliga aufgestiegen war. Das Eigengewächs des TuS Iserlohn wechselte 2004 erneut zurück an die Volme. Grothe bestritt 150 Spiele in Folge in fünf Zweitligajahren für Phoenix Hagen, ohne eine einzige Partie zu verpassen. In 4534 Minuten (30 Minuten durchschnittlich pro Spiel) erzielte er 2519 Punkte und schaffte 2009 mit den Feuervögeln als Kapitän den Aufstieg in die Basketball-Bundesliga.[2] Nach einer letzten Saison im Oberhaus des deutschen Basketballs beendete der gebürtige Sauerländer seine Karriere. Beim letzten Heimspiel, einem 96:71-Erfolg gegen EnBW Ludwigsburg, wurde Matthias Grothe verabschiedet. Sein Trikot wurde an die Hallendecke gezogen und die Nummer 9 wird in Zukunft bei Phoenix Hagen nicht mehr vergeben als ein Zeichen der Wertschätzung für einen verdienten Sportler, wie es insbesondere auch in der US-amerikanischen Profiliga NBA üblich ist.[3]

Trainer edit

Er übernahm ab der Saison 2010/11 das Traineramt bei den NOMA Iserlohn Kangaroos und führte die Mannschaft 2014 zum Meistertitel in der ersten Regionalliga West.[4] In der ersten Saison in der 2. Bundesliga ProB (2014/15) beendete Iserlohn unter Grothe die Punktrunde der Südstaffel als Tabellenführer und erreichte in der nachfolgenden Meisterrunde das Halbfinale.[5] Auch in der Saison 2015/16 führte Grothe Iserlohns Mannschaft an die Spitze der ProB-Süd (Erster nach der Punktrunde), diesmal war im Playoff-Viertelfinale Endstation.[6] Im Mai 2016 übernahm er zusätzlich den Posten des Co-Trainers der deutschen U16-Nationalmannschaft.[7]

Im November 2016 erkrankte Grothe an Lymphdrüsenkrebs.[8]

Mitte Februar 2017 gab er seinen Abschied aus Iserlohn zum Ende der Saison 2016/17 bekannt,[9] um in der nachfolgenden Spielzeit das Cheftraineramt bei Phoenix Hagen zu übernehmen.[10] Am 1. September 2017 gab Phoenix bekannt, dass Grothe seinen Aufgaben als Trainer wegen seines Gesundheitszustandes auf unbestimmte Zeit nicht nachkommen könne.[11]

Am 31. Oktober 2017 erlag Matthias Grothe seinem Krebsleiden.[12]

Hangtime edit

Der 2009 produzierte Film Hangtime – Kein leichtes Spiel spielt im Umfeld von Phoenix Hagen. Daher wurden einige der Spieler in den Film eingebunden und erhielten kleinere Rollen. Auch Matthias Grothe war als Hans-Hubert im Film zu sehen und spielt einen Team-Kollegen der Hauptfigur Vinz.

Trainer [edit] He took over from the 2010/11 season, the coach of the NOMA Iserlohn Kangaroos and led the team in 2014 for the championship title in the first Regionalliga West. In the first season in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB (2014/15) ended Iserlohn under Grothe the round of points of the Südstaffel as leaders and reached in the subsequent championship round the semifinals. Also in the 2015/16 season Grothe led Iserlohn's team to the top of the ProB-Süd (first after the round of points), this time was in the playoff quarterfinals final stop. In May 2016, he also took over the post of co-coach of the German U16 national team.

In November 2016, Grothe fell ill with lymphoma. [8]

In mid-February 2017, he announced his departure from Iserlohn at the end of the 2016/17 season, to take over in the following season head coach at Phoenix Hagen. On September 1, 2017 Phoenix announced that Grothe could not fulfill his duties as a coach because of his health for an indefinite period. [11]

On October 31, 2017 Matthias Grothe succumbed to his cancer. [12]

Success [edit] 2009: promotion with Phoenix Hagen in the basketball Bundesliga Hangtime [edit] The movie Hangtime - produced in 2009 - No easy game plays in the environment of Phoenix Hagen. Therefore, some of the players were involved in the film and received smaller roles. Matthias Grothe was also seen as Hans-Hubert in the film and plays a team colleague of the main character Vinz.
