Tula Pink is an American illustrator, author, fabric designer and quilter.

Early Life

edit

Tula Pink was born and raised in Los Angeles[1]. When she was 14, she discovered quilting through a local shop.[2] She graduated from the Otis College of Art and Design[3] in Los Angeles. After various jobs as a Museum Exhibit Designer[4], and as an illustrator in the music industry[5], she settled in Kansas City, MO in 2006[6] and joined Moda as fabric designer in YEAR.

Career at Moda

edit

Pink worked with Moda Fabrics from YEAR to 2010?? producing a total of X fabric lines, Full Moon Forest, Flutterby, Nest, Neptune (2009), [7], Hushabye, Plume (2010)[8] and Parisville.

Career with Free Spirit Fabrics

edit

In YEAR? Pink broke her ties with Moda, and became a freelance designer, licensing her fabric designs to Free Spirit fabrics. She also developed lines of thread with Aurifil, ribbons with Renaissance Ribbons, and hardware with Brewer[9]. As an ambassador for Bernina sewing machines, she produced an illustrated machine in 2019.

Spirit Animal Controversy

edit

In 2017, Pink announced a new fabric line, Spirit Animal. However, on April 4th of that year she announced she was asking Free Spirit to remove the focal print of the collection, which featured a woman in a feathered Native American headdress, on the grounds that she had been accused of cultural appropriation with the use of the image[10]. Pink explained that while she herself does have Native American ancestry, she preferred to pull the print rather than offend people.

Following the announcement, her many social media followers hotly took up the debate. The original post gained hundreds of comments, and the hashtag #istandwithtulapink quickly developed on Instagram. However, despite the support from her fanbase, the print was never reinstated.
