The EU PowerNet Initiative
EU PowerNet proposes the establishment of a European Supergrid, owned and operated by a company which is owned and governed by the existing operators (TSO's) of the High Voltage networks in the EU Member States. Basically, the company will function like a cooperative, which ia founded on the basis of a treaty betwwen EU Member States. Very important is that there is no obligation to use the services of the company. This implies that States ramain completely responsible for their own energy policy. In addition to the existing interconnectors between neighbouring countries, EU PowerNet offers interconnection between all countries. This results in one EU market for electricity and to more competition between producers of electricity. Competition leads to innovation and more widespread use of renewables, which results in less dependence of imported combustibles.
