When I was little, we had a huge unabridged dictionary. It was so thick I'd use it as a step to reach things. I've always had this fascination with words and won a spelling bee in elementary school. What a nerd. The word origins were especially cool and shed so much light on what a word really means. For example, when one realizes the English word "free" is derived from Old English freon, "to love". Freedom and love may be related words. As people seek freedom, are they seeking love?
Unfortunately, it seems that precision with English words may be decaying as blogging and text messaging become prevalent. So many people say, "well, that's what the word means to me", as if there isn't an objective source. Maybe it's just extreme independence? I hope to contribute a care for the English language as I learn more from fellow editors on Wikipedia. Encyclopedic, not stuffy and not editorialized. Eturk001 (talk) 19:30, 4 April 2013 (UTC)
