Cosmetic surgery
The use of surgical techniques to correct physical deformities is no modern development. The practice dates as back as the sixth century before Christ. Surgery is a branch of medicine that treats injuries, deformities or disease by operation or manipulation. Cosmetic refers to a beauty or a decorative item.
Thought critics has come out strongly against the so called beauty experts, reputable cosmetic surgeons and physicians successfully perform procedures such as nose reconstruction; face lifting; reshaping of breast; removal of fatty tissues from upper arms and legs, and transplanting of hair to correct baldness.
Cosmetic surgery treats deformities caused by war battle injuries, birth and accident deformities. And there is definitely no reason for someone to suffer emotional or professional problems caused by abnormalities in appearance, disabilities, cleft lip or crossed eyes in children for example. Moreover surgeries like nose reconstruction are said to have also help rebuild non deformities that cause breathing problems.
Cosmetic surgeries have generally helped build up or replace a missing physical body part resulting from both birth defects and accidents. Look sensitive teenagers of usually 14 to 16 years use cosmetic surgery. Eyelid surgery has helped correct congenital deformities such as hanging upper eyelid that does not fully open. The surgery to correct protruding or overlarge ears usually performed in children before entering school is said to have prevented psychological problems that result from teasing.
However plastic surgery is neither inexpensive nor painless. And again cosmetic surgeries are often optional surgeries not needed to ensure a patient’s physical health, thus it is rarely covered by health insurance policies. Cosmetic implants are on the other hand said to be connected to heath problems and numerous law suits against leading implant chemical manufacturers. And of another concern thought is that after a facelift surgery for instance, wrinkles eventually reappears, owing to the characteristics of the use of the individual facial muscles. Scar reduction is however only effective if there has been no extensive damage to surrounding areas of underlying tissues as in severe burns.
So despite the fact that cosmetic surgery is perceived to be more of a want than a need, the same can definitely not be said in terms of birth deformities, war battle injuries, sport injuries and accidents that threaten an individual’s health and life in particular.
It can therefore be concluded that the demand of cosmetic surgery as a need slightly out weight its demand in non life threatening situations.
