Manuel Cuadra (born in 1952 in Lima, Peru) is professor of architectural history and history of the built environment at the University of Kassel in Germany, Department of Architecture, Urban Planning and Landscape Planning. His main emphasis in teaching lies in the integrated view of architecture, the city and the built environment from the beginnings of settlement to the present.

Life

After studying architecture in Lima (1970-1976) and becoming a doctor at the TU Darmstadt (Germany, 1980–1984, 1988) he concentrated on teaching and research at the TU Darmstadt (conducted by Günter Behnisch), Heidelberg University, the Universidad de Belgrano in Buenos Aires, the Städel School of Art in Frankfurt and the Universidad de Talca in Chile. Parallel to that he developed an extensive free activity as architectural critic, writer and curator. Because of this, Manuel Cuadra was appointed extraordinary member of the Association of German Architects BDA and a full member of the International Committee of Architectural Critics CICA – since 2008 he serves CICA as a member of the Board of Directors and since 2005 as Secretary General. In 2011 he received an honorary doctorate from the Peruvian Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería. Since 2015 he runs the DFG- Project "Träume und Räume einer Revolution / Architektur in Kuba 1959-2009: Historische und theoretische Hintergründe / Periodisierung / Referenzobjekte"[1] . Beside his research activities in Latin America Manuel Cuadra maintains international relations inter alia to China. Since 1997 he is member in numerous price courts.
