Believed to be inhabited by evil spirits by the local Miwok Indians, Alcatraz Island was originally used as a military installation in the mid to late 19th century. In 1912, Alcatraz Prison was constructed to house the most dangerous and notorious prisoners in the United States including such criminals as Al Capone and Machine Gun Kelly. The prison closed in 1963 and the island was turned over to the National Park Service which currently operates the island.
