There is a dearth of knowledge about non-nutritive sucking, such as thumb and dummy sucking, in the literature. In those human societies where the newborn has free access to the nipple, non-nutritive sucking does not take place. Non-nutritive sucking also takes place in other mammals when they are reared by humans.
