The Talented Mr. Ripley is a 1999 American psychological thriller film directed by Anthony Minghella and adapted from Patricia Highsmith's 1955 novel of the same name. The film stars Matt Damon as Tom Ripley, a young man who travels to Italy to convince a wealthy playboy, Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law), to return to the United States. Plot
editIn 1950s New York, Tom Ripley, a young underachiever, is mistaken for an Ivy League graduate by a wealthy shipbuilder, Herbert Greenleaf. Greenleaf recruits Ripley to travel to Italy to persuade his son, Dickie, to return home. Ripley befriends Dickie and his girlfriend Marge Sherwood (Gwyneth Paltrow) and becomes enamored with their affluent lifestyle. Ripley's relationship with Dickie becomes strained as he grows jealous of his wealth and Marge. When Dickie begins to suspect Ripley of freeloading, Ripley kills him in a fit of rage and assumes his identity. As he impersonates Dickie, Ripley becomes entangled in a web of lies, attempting to maintain his newfound lifestyle and avoid detection by both the authorities and those close to Dickie.
