OMUTHIYA TOWN

Omuthiya Gwiipundi is the capital of Oshikoto Region in northern Namibia, situated approximately 10 kilometers from Etosha National Park. It has about 5000 residents. Prior to Omuthiya, Tsumeb was the regional capital. Omuthiya Gwiipundi means a Camelthorn tree with resting benches which was created by Mr Moses Eriki, a contractor who contracteda table and chairs under the tree to serve as a resting place for road users.

The camelthorn tree benches is also used as a trading spot where villagers traded their goods e.g food, weapons and crafts. The cattle herders also used the tree for resting and trading. The original Omuthiya tree was next to the main road and eventually fell down in 1976. After the mysterious falling of the tree, trading and development continued and Omuthiya was proclaimed a town in 2008.

Omuthiya has different places like; The fountain, near the Etosha National Park which was established by animals and it flows through out the year.There is a railway station, Omuthiya state hospital, Shell service station, shopping center and business center. Omuthiya has a number of few schools namely; Ekulo Senior Secondary school, Onashikuvu Primary School, wapandula Primary School, Onamishu Primary School, Okambwa Primary School etc.

In conclusion Omuthiya is becoming a very developed town, it has a lot of infrastructures that it did not have before, their education and entertainment is improving on a daily basis. Omuthiya has a brilliant mission which is to provide excellent and affordable municipal services to all its local residents,investors and visitors through the equitable and efficient use of all its resources. Omuthiya is a beautiful up coming town.
