On 27 July 2020, CONCACAF announced a new qualifying format for the World Cup.

First round: CONCACAF teams ranked 1 to 35 based on the FIFA rankings of July 2020 were split into 12 from Group 1 to group 11 consist 3 teams and Group 12 consist 2 teams. From Group 1 to 11 teams will play 2 matches 1 at home and 1 away while Group 12 teams will a home and away playoff. All group winners will advance to the final round including the the Group 12 playoff winners.
Group 1 to group 11 Only the group winners advance to Final Round should the score remain level after regular playing time, extra time will be played and should the score still be level after extra time has been played, a penalty shoot-out will take place to determine the match winners. This rule was introduced to reduce the chance of a team's fate being decided by a drawing of lots.
Group 12 The two teams competed in a two-legged home-and-away play-off In each tie, The winners, decided on aggregate score If the aggregate score is level, the away goals rule is applied, i.e. the team that scored more goals away from home over the two legs advances. If away goals are also equal, then 30 minutes of extra time is playedThe away goals rule is again applied after extra time, i.e. if there are goals scored during extra time and the aggregate score is still level, the visiting team advances by virtue of more away goals scored. If no goals are scored during extra time, the tie is decided by penalty shoot-out. Winners of the tie advance to Final round
Final Round: The 12 teams which advanced from the first round were divided into two groups of six teams to play home-and-away round-robin matches. The Group winners of each group qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and the two second place teams advanced to the 3rd place playoff.
Third Place playoff: The two runners from the final round will play a two-legged home-and-away series. The two winners, decided on aggregate score, qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. If the aggregate score is level, the away goals rule is applied, i.e. the team that scored more goals away from home over the two legs advances. If away goals are also equal, then 30 minutes of extra time is played. All 35 FIFA-affiliated national teams from CONCACAF will enter qualification. Teams were seeded based on their July 2020 FIFA rankings.

ScheduleEdit

The schedule of the competition is expected to be as follows, according to the FIFA International Match Calendar.

On 25 June 2020, FIFA announced that the inter-confederation play-offs, originally scheduled to be played in March 2022, were moved to June 2022. On 8 September 2020, CONCACAF announced that the matches scheduled for October and November 2020 would be rescheduled to 2021.

The teams are ranked according to points (3 points for a win in regulation, extra time or penalties, 0 points for a loss). If tied on points, tiebreakers are applied in the following order:

Goal difference;
Goals scored;
Away goals scored;
Drawing of lots.
