Enderby (fictional character) Francis Xavier Enderby is the protagonist of a quartet of comic novels by Anthony Burgess. The character itself was first conceived by Burgess during his service in Malaya (ref to Little Wilson & Big God) but did not appear until the first novel in 1963.
At the start of the cycle, Enderby is shown as a poet, living on the interest from investments left to him by his stepmother, who has a solitary life in Brighton, plagued by dyspepsia. He appears to compose most of his work while seated on the lavatory and uses the bathtub as a filing cabinet.
The four volumes that make up the cycle are:
- Inside Mr. Enderby (London, Heinemann, 1963 - as 'Joseph Kell')
- Enderby Outside (London, Heinemann, 1968)
- The Clockwork Testament, or Enderby's End (London, Hart-Davis,MacGibbon, 1974)
- Enderby's Dark Lady, or No End of Enderby (London, Hutchinson, 1984)
Burgess named the character after Enderby Land, a projecting land mass of Antarctica.
