  1. Mercury pollution by gold mining in a global biodiversity hotspot, the Choco biogeographic region, Colombia
    1. This peer-reviewed article in a scientific journal, so should be reliable. It discusses the results of observational studies done in Colombia to measure levels of a certain metal in the environment and the local people. Mercury spread into the air, soil, people, and fish. For example, a number of people in both communities have total mercury levels in their hair greater than U.S. EPA recommended level. They differed by age, so it seems that mercury is being accumulated in humans over time especially from the fish nearby.[1]
    2. I plan to use the results from this study to explain how mercury from common industrial activities in developing countries such as gold-mining can impact the ecosystem around it. This adds another viewpoint to the article that is outside of the U.S.' that shows how others worldwide are impacted by heavy metals
  2. Environmental monitoring and risk assessment of organophosphate pesticides in aquatic ecosystems of north-west Bangladesh
    1. This peer-reviewed article discusses the amount of certain pesticides, organophosphates, in marine communities in Bangladesh due to the potential overuse of pesticides of farmers. Organophosphate pesticides like chlorpyrifos, diazinon, fenitrothion, and quinalphos used in agriculture were found to have high or acute ecological risks on the surface water and soil for the aquatic insects and crustaceans in the northwestern part of Bangladesh. It showed higher ecological risks for Daphnia especially compared to the other marine organisms.[2]
    2. I plan to use the results to add a section on a different type of pesticides that the article does not currently have information on. The results also are obtained in another country from the U.S., giving the article a better worldwide view.
  3. Effects of Aluminium Contamination on the Nervous System of Freshwater Aquatic Vertebrates: A Review
    1. This literature review talks about how aluminum is cycled through the environment via natural and manmade causes. It combines effects of aluminum on organisms, specifically aquatic life from several different studies. For example, it can affect nervous system of fishes, impairing their motor, cognitive, and locomotive abilities.[3]
    2. I plan to use this to add a new section under heavy metals for aluminum including its point sources and the effects of it in aquatic and mammalian life. It has also been shown to affect the nervous system of humans and mice too for instance.
  4. Bioaccumulation of heavy metals in fish species from the Meiliang Bay, Taihu Lake, China
    1. This article talks about general effects of heavy metals in fish such as how they get stored in fishes' kidneys, livers, and gills. It also describes the results of a study done in Taihu Lake in China on how much of the heavy metals were found in two fish species there.[4]
    2. I plan to use this to describe the trends researchers have found regarding heavy metal concentration in fishes and to discuss a specific study done in a region of the world besides the U.S.
  5. Biochemical and histological effects of sub-chronic exposure to atrazine in crayfish Cherax destructor
    1. This peer-reviewed paper talks about general effects of a herbicide called atrazine and its effects on freshwater crayfish from the Czech Republic such as damage to the gills, hepatopancreas and potential lead-up to liver failure and tissue hypoxia and lactic acidosis, processes reminiscent of muscle pain and fatigue.[5]
    2. I plan on using this to add another case study of how environmental toxins can affect aquatic life. I can also make a new section on herbicides.
