John Henry McCray & The Lighthouse In honor of John Henry McCray (1910-1987)and The Lighthouse (1910-1989), this Wikipedia page is dedicated to his tireless effort to eradicate social injustice and inequality through the most prominent aspect of his work and legacy, The Lighthouse.
John H. McCray Background
John H. McCray (1910-1987), who, in a letter to a friend, 25 March 1960, he had his own role as a regional black leader. The things McCray said was "I have no importance other than serving as the medium in a small way through which most of us S.C. Negroes can pass into some degree of civic and political freedom." Mr. McCray spoke about change for the community of South Carolina where some people was scared to speak up about. Mr. McCray sixteen years where he had made an impact with the voice he has as an editor. He was one of the chief best black newspapers editor’s in the history of Southern journalism, the Lighthouse and Informer.
He was a very smart young man born in a place called Youngstown, Fla.The age of six years old he moved with his family to South Carolina, and grew up in the Lincolnville area of Charleston County. His early interest in writing, speaking and public issues manifested itself during his years at Charleston's Avery Institute. He was the first honor student in his class that made history served as editor of the school newspaper, and repeatedly won prizes for his wonderful skills. Mr. McCray graduated from Avery as valedictorian in 1931 (with the highest four-year average of any student since 1872) and went on to receive a B.S. degree in Chemistry from Talladega College (Alabama) in 1935.
The newspaper Mr. John McCray is famous for is one of the few called the “Light House” This paper is about giving people a voice to speak letting your voice be heard about any issue you have about the community, the state, and any time of change in life. Some people might have this paper was about making money but it was not. It was based on giving people a chance in life to stand up for themselves and speak their mind. In 1941 he moved his offices from Charleston to Columbia and provided the communications base on a program for black no matter the racial equity, and social justice. "I love The Lighthouse," McCray said in a speech at Mullins, 2 December 1945. "Gave up a nice job to run it. We don't publish it to make money. We publish it so our people can have a voice and some means of getting along together."

The Allen University English Journal class of Spring 2016 (List names), determined that the absence of a page dedicated to the life and work of John H. McCray was needed to fill the gaps of so many other components of his work and influence found throughout the internet and specifically Wikipedia. The class.... developed the page.... renamed the Allen University newspaper AU Times to AU Informer....
