Several American Chess Congress were held in New York City. The first tournament was held from October to November 1857.[4]. Two more were held in New York: the fifth tournament in 1880 and sixthin 1889.

Hermann Helms helped organize two international grandmaster events held in the city: New York 1924 chess tournament and New York 1927 chess tournament.
