Cogburn is an American derivative of the Scottish surname "Cockburn" and a segment of that larger international family that sprung up during the late medieval period in lowland Scotland.
Family Origins
editIt is believed there are multiple immigrant families that assumed this derivative, either from scribal error at time of immigration (due to phonetic difference) or a deliberate change for political or other environmental reasons.
A large subset of Cogburns are descendents of a Central Texas Cockburn/Cogburn family that adopted the Cogburn derivative in the late 1800's.
Fictional characters
edit- Rooster Cogburn, a character in the films True Grit and Rooster Cogburn
