Actors Of The Lawrence Batley Theatre

In 1809 when there was Poverty, Death and Class on the streets of Huddersfield, a group of people got together to create the first actors who would perform at the Theatre in the city centre to escape what was happening in the real world. They could become whoever they wanted and the people of Huddersfield wouldn't be any the wiser as to who these people were. They named the Theatre The Lawrence Batley Theatre after their first director of the first play that was put on at the the Theatre. When word got round Huddersfield that there were plays being performed at the Theatre people flocked to come see these plays to escape the realism of their lives. They felt the Theatre was the only place they felt safe from their surroundings.

Today these actors faces are hung up outside the Theatre in Wire and Mesh to symbolise that they kept the spirits alive with their spectacular performances giving people hope and lives.
