Conception and release edit

The Japanese novel, Kyokō Suiri (虚構推理, "Invented Inference"), was written by Kyo Shirodaira and published by Kodansha in May 2011. Chashiba Katase was contracted to adapt the novel into a manga series for serialization in Kodansha's monthly magazine, Shonen Magazine R.[1] Shirodaira gave Katase free reign of the manga, allowing Katase to work as he liked as long as it was entertaining. Katase originally planned to do a faithful adaptation of the novel; due to the format of serialization, Katase was advised by his editor to make the first chapter more exciting than the original source material. This resulted in an original extension to the plot which included introducing and exterminating yōkai.[1] On coming up with the design for the protagonist, Kotoko Iwanaga, Katase stated he wanted her to have doll-like-beauty to contradict with her bold-direct dialogue to increase the character's charm; in addition, the secondary protagonist, Kuro Sakuragawa, was drawn to be rustic to contrast Kotoko's elegant and youthful appearance.[2]
