“Land Ocean Interactions in the Coastal Zone” (LOICZ) is a core project of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) and the International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change (IHDP). LOICZ undertakes research that addresses key issues of coastal change and use, in the context of scenarios of future human activity and environmental change. It promotes basic and applied coastal zone research, especially that which synthesizes and scales up results for dissemination to the scientific community, policy makers and the public. Major activities to date include the development of tools and databases in support of classification (typology) of coastal ecosystems, including the LOICZ environmental database and biogeochemical budget website.
