The Melbourne Repertory Theatre Company was a theatrical institution in Melbourne, Australia.

History

Gregan McMahon, an admired and respected actor, established the company in 1911, in order to present legitimate drama, including plays by Ibsen, Shaw and Sheridan. Its first productions were presented at the Turn Verein Hall (later Follies Hall) in Young street, Fitzroy near Victoria Parade. McMahon was its artistic director 1911–1918, during which time 57 plays were staged, including nine by Australian authors: Louis Esson, Alfred Buchanan, Arthur H. Adams, Edward Dyson, Blamire Young, E. H. C. Oliphant, William Moore, Mrs Kathleen Deardon and Miss Mary E. Wilkinson.^[1] Entrepreneurs J. & N. Tait took over management in 1918 for eight years and McMahon was again artistic director 1926–1928.
