History

edit

The Wits Choir was formed during winter of 1961, when the foundation members began rehearsing under the conductorship of John Blacking, who was then a lecturer in social anthropology, and who was well known as a musicologist, composer, pianist and conductor. (Johannesburg Public Concert programme, 1966).

The Choir delivered its inaugural public concert on 12 October 1963 (concert programme, 1963)

December 1975 the Choir embarked on an overseas tour to South America, under the conductorship of Professor Douglas Reid

1984 Chamber Choir udo Henk Temmingh (constituted in 1979) amalgamates with the Choir, and is once again known as "Wits Choir". (press release?
