Illegal fishing uncovered in lake Liambezi

edit

Lake Liambezi is situated 43km south of Katima Mulilo in Namibia. It was reported by local villages of Muyako Village and even some community calling in the local radio Silozi Radio Service complaining about illegal fishing in Lake Liambezi. At the same time fisherman charges that there is no illegal fishing, since they all have licenses.from the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources.

When NEW ERA newspaper visited the lake, foreigners ware seen running and begging for fish and some of them managed to buy fish while others could not.Fishermongers in Katima Mulilo are unhappy that they have to compete with fish traders from Zambia and even the Democratic Republic of Congo(DRC) who reportedly offer more money per catch.

When the Government decided to respond on complaints of the community, they joint forces of the Namibian police and the Namibian Defence force found that many foreigners as far as from Zambia and DRC were fishing illegally, some even found without valid documents. Those who were found without valid documents, and fishing illegally were arrested and detained at Katima Mulilo police station.[1]

Government advice

edit

Morgan Saisai (fishery inspector) advised the community to have permits, "But we don't allow drag netting and bashing in the water. You must just cast your net and leave it for a couple of hours and later you can come and check if there is fish. Fish must swim in the net themselves, they should not be forced",quote Saisai advising fishmongers. He urged all people living near inland water to abide by the fisheries Act or face prosecution.[2]
