Preface

Yuribou: This hentai dictionary sort of evolved out of me being dissatisfied that there were no real glossaries out there that were complete for explaining all the random Japanese terms that cropped up in hentai and hentai manga. So after trawling through multiple different dictionaries, I came up with this one—basically a compilation of many other online attempts with a few novel terms of my own added in.

DocWatson: Since Yuribou has gone AWOL (the last post on his blog was on <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20110706054026/http://www.yuribou.net/blog/">6 April 2011</a>) and his blog's supplementary material—including all versions of the Hentai Dictionary—was deleted when the blog was changed to a different domain in July 2011, I've decided to issue my own update of the Yuribou Hentai Dictionary. Unfortunately, I did not have access to the final draft of Version 2.1 (not even via the Internet Archive Wayback Machine or <a href="http://www.webcitation.org/query.php">WebCite</a>) when composing v3.0, so I fell back on my "alpha" draft of it (as such, version 3.0 is a "fork" of Version 2). Fortunately, my patience and persistence have been rewarded, and the Wayback Machine now has v2.1, so in this, v3.1, I've reunited the forks, adding Yuribou's material as I deem appropriate, as well as making other corrections and adding three new entries (<a href="#hamedori">hamedori</a>, <a href="#onabe">onabe</a>, and <a href="#orgasm">orgasm</a>).

The list is in absolute alphabetical order, ignoring macrons. Most English loan words (wasei eigo) in are order by the English, not the rōmaji, spelling. Note that I use <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hepburn_romanization"/>revised Hepburn romanization</a> (except for Yuribou's name) and American English. <a name="18-kin">１８禁</a> 18-kin / jūhachi kin "18 restricted". An abbreviation of "jūhachi saimiman kinshi" (18歳未満禁止 "forbidden to minors less than 18 years of age"). The highest (generic) age rating category in Japan for <a href="#dōjinshi">dōjinshi</a>, movies, games (e.g., <a href="#eroge">eroge</a>), etc. I.e., pornography, or something close to it. Associated with an <a href="http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n236/doc-watson42/18kin.jpg">"18 / keep out" logo</a>. Compare with <a href="#seinen">seinen</a>.
<a name="3P">３Ｐ / ４Ｐ</a> 3P / 4P
("san pī" / "yon pī")		 Respectively, "threesome; ménage à trois" and "foursome" (４Ｐ is also rendered in kana: よんピー). "San pī" is abbreviated from "sannin play" (三人プレイ / 三人プレー "sannin purē"—"three person play"). Another term for threesomes is "sanninkon" (三人婚 lit. "three-person wedding"—"ménage à trois; three-way sexual relationship"). Compare with the even more intimate <a href="#niana-dōji">niana dōji</a>, and the more populous <a href="#rinkan">rinkan</a>.

<a name="A">A</a>

<a name="ahegao">アヘ顔</a> ahegao "O-face", "cumming face"; weird facial expression during or after sexual climax. Probably from アヘアヘ ("aheahe"—the sound of flushed breath/uncontrollable moaning in sex and of sexual excitement) and 顔 ("kao"—"face"). Seemingly becoming more and more popular in <a href="#hentai">hentai</a> recently, this is the name for the increasingly weird and stupid faces that (female) characters pull either to indicate that they are at the heights of orgasm, sampling the pleasures of heaven, or merely losing control of their bowels. Usually the character has an exaggerated expression, with flushed cheeks, their "eyes rolled up, mouth open and tongue sticking out"—they have mentally "checked out"; often the result of <a href="#monzetsu">monzetsu</a>. Called "screwed silly" in English. A feature of some of the more <a href="#kikai">extreme</a> BDSM anime, manga, and <a href="#eroge">eroge</a>. <a name="ainame">愛嘗め</a> ainame "Love lick". Otherwise known as "sixty-nine" ("shikusu nain") in other countries—the sexual act in which two people give oral sex to each other simultaneously. A position which looks great aesthetically, but in practice there are always problems when the participants are of different heights, and it generally results in distraction of both from each other's pleasure.
<a name="aka-chan-purē">赤ちゃんプレイ</a> aka-chan purē Lit. "baby play". Also called "yōji parē" (ようじプレイ "baby play"). An act fairly popular amongst businessmen in Japan where they gain pleasure from being treated as a baby with diapers, spankings, and the like. See also <a href="#omorashi">omorashi</a>. Yet another "high ranking businessman with power secretly yearns to be submissive in order to relax" kind of <a href="#fechi">fetish</a>.
<a name="anaru">アナル</a> anaru "Anal". Refers to any kind of anal sex or anal insertion. The word for "anus" is "<a href="#ketsu-no-ana">ketsu no ana</a>".
<a name="anaru zeme">アナル攻め</a> anaru zeme Lit. "anal attack". To play or stimulate the anus with fingers or tongue or in S/M play—to abuse the anal area with various instruments. Use your imagination.
<a name="ashi-fechi">足フェチ</a> ashi fechi "Foot <a href="#fechi">fetish</a>". Men who like feet, <a href="#kitanai-kutsushita-fechi">smelly socks</a>, and shoes and the licking and worshiping of same. Intimately linked with <a href="#ashikoki">ashikoki</a>. Also carries a definite submissive aspect.
<a name="ashikoki">足コキ / 足こき / 足扱き</a> ashikoki "Footjob"; "足扱き" is used very rarely—"足コキ" is the most common rendering. The act of stimulating the recipient with feet. Usually refers to a male recipient, though one could envisage it being used on females as well. Feet are often covered in tights, stockings, or the legendary <a href="#loose-socks">loose socks</a>. The pleasure is said to also be derived from the submissive aspect of the act.
<a name="AV">ＡＶ / エーブイ</a> AV
("ēbui")		 "Adult video" (アダルトビデオ / アダルト・ビデオ; both: "adaruto bideo"—"pornographic video"). An "AV idol" (AVアイドル "ēbui aidoru") is an porn star (one who stars in adult videos; they may have a side job as <a href="#nūdoru">nūdoru</a>). Talk about your euphemisms… See <a href="#hamedori">hamedori</a> and <a href="#roshutsushō">roshutsushō</a>, two of the popular genres.

<a name="B">B</a>

<a name="baibu">バイブ</a> baibu "Vibe", short for vibrator (バイブレータ / バイブレーター "baiburēta"/"baiburētā"). Taken directly from the English for vibrator. However, since nearly all the <a href="#chinpo">penis</a> substitutes in Japan are motorized in some way, "vibe" has come to colloquially refer to all <a href="#harikata">dildos</a>. Also called "dendō kokeshi" (電動こけし "electric wooden doll"—specifically referring to vibrating dildos). A double-ended vibrating dildo is "sōtō baibu" (双頭バイブ), and a vibrator wand is called "handī kata denki massāji utsuwa" (ハンディー型電気マッサージ器), of which the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hitachi_Magic_Wand">Hitachi Magic Wand</a> and the AcuVibe are the most commonly seen in anime and manga. <a name="baishun">売春</a> baishun

"Prostitution" (売春 lit. "selling spring" or "selling youth"); "baishunfu" means "prostitute" (売春婦; the formal, legal word; also less commonly pronounced "baishunpu"). Historical terms for prostitute include "yūjo" (遊女 "woman of pleasure", the Edo period term for licensed prostitutes and courtesans), tayū (太夫) and later oiran (花魁, both titles of high ranking Edo-period courtesans; "tayū" is now a title used in traditional Japanese arts such as noh, jōruri, kabuki, and sekkyō-bushi), "yotaka" (夜鷹 lit. "nightjar", which also referred to night time soba vendors), "Karayuki-san" (唐行きさん "Ms. Gone-overseas"—a Japanese woman who traveled to East Asia and Southeast Asia in the second half of the 19th century to work as prostitute), "ianfu" (慰安婦 "comfort woman"—a girl or woman who was forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese military from 1937 through the end of World War II), and "panpan" and "panpan girl" (パンパン / パンパンガール "panpan gāru"—a hooker who consorted with Occupation soldiers after World War II). In 1956 the Anti-Prostitution Law/Prostitution Prevention Law (売春防止法, "Baishun Bōshi Hō"; Act No. 118 of 1956) was enacted, in part to prevent the sale of girls into prostitution. It went into effect 1 April 1958, the beginning of the modern era for the Japanese sex industry (<a href="#fūzoku">fūzoku</a>).


Modern terms for prostitute include "jorō" (女郎, which also means "bitch" or "<a href="#yariman">slut</a>"), "shōgi" (娼妓 "prostitute; harlot"), "fūzokujo" (風俗嬢 "sex industry worker"), "toruko-jō" (トルコ嬢 "Turkish girl"), now called a "soapjō" (ソープ嬢, "sōpu-jō"—"soap girl", a <a href="#soapland">soapland</a> worker), and "japayuki"/"japayuki-san" (じゃぱゆき / ジャパ行きさん lit. "(Miss) Gone-to-Japan"—a non-Japanese Asian woman working in Japan, often illegally and under duress; derogatory).
<a name="bakunyū">爆乳</a> bakunyū Lit. "exploding breasts". Large <a href="#oppai">breasts</a> of a proportion only achievable through cosmetic surgery in human terms, or naturally in <a href="#dōjinshi">dōjinshi</a>. See also the smaller <a href="#kyonyū">kyonyū</a> and even larger <a href="#chōnyū">chōnyū</a>. A similar word for this degree of breast size is "dekanyū" (デカ乳, lit. "huge breasts").
<a name="BBW">ＢＢＷ / ＳＳＢＢＷ</a> BBW / SSBBW From the English "Big Beautiful Woman"/"Super-Sized Big Beautiful Woman". See <a href="#debusen">debu / debusen</a> and <a href="#potchari">potchari</a>.
<a name="BE">ＢＥ</a> BE "Breast expansion". Intimately associated with <a href="#bakunyū">bakunyū</a>. Refers to girls of modest proportions suddenly finding themselves in possession of more sizable (and most of the time, impossible) <a href="#oppai">oppai</a>. Useful, since they often go back to normal afterwards, allowing the advantages of having a prodigious bust without the consequences of backache, shoulder pain, and not being able to get nice dresses to fit without looking like a <a href="#yariman">slut</a>. See also <a href="#kakuchō">kakuchō</a>.
<a name="binyū">微乳</a> binyū "Small chest". Girls with small <a href="#oppai">breasts</a> (c. A-cup size). Does not refer to lolis (Lolitas—see <a href="#lolicon">lolicon</a>) who have no breasts at all (<a href="#munyū">munyū</a> and <a href="#petanko">petanko</a>). Commonly used as older small girls with small breasts satisfy the lolicon urges of the otaku populace while being legal. Smaller than <a href="#hinnyū">hinnyū</a>.
<a name="biyaku">媚薬</a> biyaku "Aphrodisiac; love drug". "Sai'inzai" (催淫剤) is another word. In <a href="#hentai">hentai</a> anime and <a href="#seinen">seinen</a> manga, these are often unrealistically strong—causing the recipient to fall into uncontrollable lust—and are apparently widespread in Japan, since every second sex slaver and third rapist has access to one. They come in all shapes and forms, from plain old pills, to topical cremes, to injections into the <a href="#oppai">breast</a> or <a href="#inkaku">clitoris</a>, to the secretions of a demon or monster, and can also take the form of non-pharmaceuticals, such as magic (though both words given here are medically related). Compare with <a href="#mind-control">mind control</a>, <a href="#saiminjutsu">saiminjutsu</a>, and <a href="#super-touch">super touch</a>.
<a name="bodycon">ボディコン</a> bodycon
("bodīkon")		 Also rendered as "bodicon"; a portmanteau of "body conscious" (ボディ・コンシャス). A fashion style that became popular in the early 1990s, emphasizing tight, revealing clothing, such as skintight minidresses. Bodycon is worn by young women, especially as clubwear. See also <a href="#seifuku-fechi">seifuku fechi</a>.
<a name="bokashi">暈し / ぼかし</a> bokashi "Fogging; blurred-out (photo/video)". A method of <a href="#ken'etsu">censorship</a> which blurs the offending bits. Compare with <a href="#suminuri">suminuri</a> and <a href="#mosaic">mosaic</a>.
<a name="bonyū">母乳</a> bonyū Lit. "mother's milk/lactation". See also <a href="#BE">BE</a> and <a href="#bakunyū">bakunyū</a>. Fetish involving girls with large breasts (<a href="#kyonyū">kyonyū</a>, etc.) who lactate. If in anime/<a href="#dōjinshi">dōjinshi</a>, usually not postpartum (after giving birth)—other reasons are given for their lactation, usually spurious. And (paradoxically), the milk comes out when they are amorous (sometimes to the point of orgasmic ejaculation), rather when someone is suckling.
<a name="broken-dolls">ブロケンドルズ</a> broken dolls
("buroken doruzu")		 A fetish fairly reminiscent of Rei Ayanami in the early episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion. I.e. involving young girls in bandages, casts, medical equipment, and various other paraphernalia. Oh, did I mention that they have to be (otherwise) naked? Originated from Frenchman Romain Slocombe who in his words "has an obsession with accidents", and who published the <a href="#shashinshū">photobook</a> City of the Broken Dolls: A Medical Art Diary, Tokyo 1993–96, which used Japanese models. See also <a href="#iryō-fechi">iryō fechi</a> and <a href="#seifuku-fechi">seifuku fechi</a>.
<a name="bukkake">打っ掛け</a> bukkake

"Splashing on; splashing at". Actually not a dirty word but has come to mean a variety of things.

  • To ejaculate on your partner's face or body.
  • An <a href="#AV">AV</a> in which men take turns ejaculating on one woman.
In Western pornography culture, it has inevitably come to mean the latter, as whenever people think of Japanese pornography, they immediately go for the most extreme meaning of a phrase rather than the actual. In <a href="#seinen">seinen</a> manga, <a href="#hentai">hentai</a> anime, and <a href="#eroge">eroge</a> both can be achieved at once, due to the fictionally voluminous amount of ejaculate. The equivalent of the equally humorous latex <a href="#chinpo">penis</a> porn of the American variety. See also the synonymous <a href="#gansha">gansha</a>, and <a href="#gokkun">gokkun</a> and <a href="#own-goal">own goal</a>.
<a name="bunny-girl">バニーガール</a> bunny girl
("banī gāru")		 A girl or woman wearing a Playboy Bunny–type costume (<a href="#kemonomimi">bunny ears</a>, collar with bow tie, shirt cuffs, corset with a rabbit tail, and hose). A popular form of <a href="#cosplay">cosplay</a>, including in <a href="#hostess-club">hostess clubs</a>, and <a href="#image-club">image clubs</a> and the wider <a href="#fūzoku">fūzoku</a>, as well as in anime and manga. See also <a href="#seifuku-fechi">seifuku fechi</a>.
<a name="burusera">ブルセラ</a> burusera From "burūmā" (ブルーマー "<a href="http://info.japantimes.co.jp/text/ek20110217wh.html">bloomers</a>"—"[girls'] gym shorts") and "sērāfuku" (セーラー服 "<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_school_uniform">sailor fuku</a>"—"sailor uniform"), referring to two of the major types of uniforms worn by schoolgirls. Apparently, men will collect and swap these items of clothing, which only have value if they have been worn by an actual schoolgirl (see <a href="#yogoreta-shitagi">yogoreta shitagi</a>). <a name="C">C</a>

<a name="chikankōi">痴漢行為</a> chikankōi "Public groping", from the words "chikan" (痴漢 "pervert; groper") and "kōi" (行為 "deed"). The act seen fairly commonly in manga and anime in which women or schoolgirls on a crowded public train are felt up by dirty old businessmen who aren't getting any at home. A female chikan is called a "chijo" (痴女).
<a name="chingurigaeshi">ちんぐり返し</a> chingurigaeshi After "dengurigaeshi" (でんぐり返, "somersault"), substituting "<a href="chinpo">chin</a>" (ちん, "penis"). A sexual position in which a man lays down, facing up, and his partner takes both his legs from the feet and lifts them up, thus lifting the man's groin up to his partner's head. In this state, the partner can <a href="#anaru-zeme">finger</a> him, perform <a href="#ferachio">fellatio</a>, engage in <a href="#ainame">sixty-nine</a>, and so on. It can also involve humiliation as part of <a href="#M">domination/submission</a>. The same for females is <a href="#mangurigaeshi">mangurigaeshi</a>.
<a name="chinpo">ちんぽ</a> chinpo "Penis". Otherwise known as "chinchin" (チンチン; slang, mild, childish), "ochinchin" (おチンチン; official grammar school term), "chinko" (ちんこ (vulgar)), "chinpoko" (ちんぽこ / 珍矛), and various other variations on the theme. A more polite word for genitalia, both male and female, is "asoko" (あそこ (from 彼処) "over there"). Do not confuse with "chichi" (breasts—see <a href="#oppai">oppai</a>). For terms for large penes, see <a href="#kyochin">kyochin / kyotama</a>.
<a name="chippai">ちっぱい</a> chippai "Small breasts". From "chitchai" (ちっちゃい (小っちゃい) "tiny; little; wee") and <a href="#oppai">oppai</a>. A derogatory word to some. Probably about the same size as <a href="#binyū">binyū</a>, and larger than <a href="#munyū">munyū</a> and <a href="#petanko">petanko</a>.
<a name="chōkyō">調教</a> chōkyō "Training (animals)/breaking (animals)". The "breaking in" of new sexual conquests through domination and abuse until their shouts of "No! No!" (meaning "Yes! Yes!") turn into moans of "Yes! Yes!" (which means…err…"Yes! Yes!"). A genre of Japanese pornography, both live action and drawn, and the bread and butter of <a href="#gōkan">rape</a> hentai.
<a name="chōnyū">超乳</a> chōnyū Lit. "ultra breasts". <a href="#oppai">Breasts</a> whose size is at the limits of human imagination—definitely not possible without extreme cosmetic surgery in the real world, or just not possible altogether. Often the result of <a href="#BE">BE</a>. Always natural (of course) and held up impossibly by skimpy <a href="#mizugi">swimsuits</a>. They often <a href="#bonyū">lactate</a>, just through the virtue of being large.
<a name="cosplay">コスプレ</a> cosplay "Costume play". Commonly non-sexual, the dressing up of girls (and boys) in costumes, especially certain outfits—e.g. sailor fuku (school uniform), miko uniform, nurse uniform, <a href="#kemonomimi">kemonomimi</a> (animal ears), etc. Obviously also used in <a href="#hentai">hentai</a>, as well as in real-life cosplay restaurants (コスプレ系飲食店 "kosupure kei'inshokuten"), such as <a href="#maid-cafe">maid cafes</a>, and in <a href="#fūzoku">fūzoku</a> (sex industry) establishments such as <a href="#image-club">image clubs</a>. <a name="D">D</a>

<a name="debusen">デブ // でぶ専 / デブ専</a> debu / debusen Lit. "fat, fatso"/"chubby-chasing (fat fetishism); chubby-chaser". Originally from "debusen zoku" (でぶ専族 / デブ専族 "fatso-partial tribe"). Men who like fat women. I can't really imagine the attraction of this particular <a href="#fechi">fetish</a>, but I assume that it's just "one of those things". Presumably they gain sexual pleasure from being squeezed between folds of body fat and tummy cleavage. See <a href="#BBW">BBW / SSBBW</a> and compare with <a href="#potchari">potchari</a>, as well as <a href="#ganki">ganki</a>, a fetish associated with debu women.
<a name="deep-kiss">デイープキス</a> deep kiss
("dīpu kisu")		 Japanese word for "French kiss" (kiss with tongues). Also rendered "DK".
<a name="delivery-health">デリバリーヘルス</a> delivery health
("deribarī herusu")		 Abbreviated "deriheru" (デリヘル), and also called "shutchō herusu" (出張ヘルス "business trip <a href="#health">health</a>"). Outcall "<a href="#fashion-health">fashion health</a>"—a callgirl service.
<a name="dōjinshi">同人誌</a> dōjinshi Lit. "same person periodical publication". Self-published (fan) magazines, manga, or novels. The term "dōjin" (同人) covers just about any fan-made item—anime, games, merchandise, music, art collections, etc. Dōjin works are created by "circles" (サークル "sākuru"), which may consist of a single person, or an entire cottage factory. And where there are fans, there is porn—of every type and description—<a href="http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Rule%2034">Rule 34</a> definitely applies. Many of the dōjinshi, including the <a href="#hentai">hentai</a> ones ("H dōjin" (エッチ同人, "etchi dōjin") or "<a href="#ero">ero</a> dōjin" (エロ同人)), fall into the "parody" category—based on existing anime, manga, or games, though original stories also exist. The largest gathering of dōjin fans is the biannual Comiket (コミケ "Komike"), AKA Comic Market (コミックマーケット "Komikku Māketto"), which takes place every August and December, at which tens of thousands of circles sell to over 500,000 fans. <a name="enjo-kōsai">援助交際</a> enjo kōsai "Compensated dating". A common Japanese euphemism for the process in which fat old businessmen will "hire" high school girls for company, dates, and ultimately, sex, in exchange for monetary rewards and expensive things. Otherwise known as "teenage <a href="#baishun">prostitution</a>", or "illegal". Interesting to note that this <a href="#fūzoku">service</a> is generally run by said schoolgirls and not by some shady backstreet pimps. Only in Japan, eh…
<a name="ero">エロ</a> ero "Erotic; eroticism", from the English. Used in slang as an adjective (e.g., "ero manga" (エロマンガ / エロ漫画; see <a href="#seinen">seinen</a> and <a href="#ladies'-comics">ladies' comics / LadyComi</a>), "eroanime" (エロアニメ), and "ero eiga" (エロ映画 "erotic film")) in the way that "<a href="#hentai">hentai</a>" is in English, though without hentai's specificity as to national origin or mediums. Compare with <a href="#etchi">etchi</a>.
<a name="ero-gekiga">エロ劇画</a> ero gekiga Lit. "erotic dramatic pictures"—"erotic graphic novel". Gekiga (劇画) is a genre of manga founded in 1957 (in opposition to the cartoonish style epitomized by Osamu Tezuka's work of the period) which features adult styles and themes, as well greater detail and realism in its artwork than had previously been used. The sub-genre ero gekiga (also called "sanryū gekiga" (三流劇画 "third-rate gekiga") and "kannō gekiga" (官能劇画 "sensual/carnal gekiga")) grew out of the leftist student activism of the 1960s and 1970s, and officially began in 1973 with the founding of the magazine Manga Erotopia (漫画エロトピア). However, with the rise of <a href="#lolicon">lolicon</a> from 1979 onward, as well as other factors, the "adult males doing very adult things to mature women" began to be supplanted by younger and cuter characters and artwork. Probably the best known ero gekiga is Toshio Maeda's Chōjin Densetsu Urotsuki Dōji (Urotsukidōji), which began serialization in Manga Erotopia in the mid-1980s. Compare with <a href="#seinen">seinen</a>.
<a name="eroge">エロゲ / エロゲー</a> eroge / erogē

"Erotic video game", which generally employs an "anime" art style and (of course) features sex. From "erochikku gēmu" (エロチックゲーム)—see <a href="#ero">ero</a>—and also known as an "adult game" (アダルトゲーム "adaruto gēmu"). Eroge grow out of non-hentai bishōjo games (美少女ゲーム "bishōjo gēmu", literally "pretty girl game"), also known as "gal games" (ギャルゲーム "gyaru gēmu", often shortened to "galge"); the feminine equivalent is the "otome game" (乙女ゲーム "otome gēmu", lit. "maiden game"), a dating sim (see below) aimed at girls featuring male characters.

Popular eroge formats include: adventure role-playing games; visual novels (ビジュアルノベル "bijuaru noberu"; interactive fiction games); dating sims (technically called a "romantic simulation game" (恋愛シミュレーションゲーム "ren'ai shimyurēshon gēmu"), in which the player attempts to win the affections of one or more of a selection of characters); and stripping games (poker, mahjong, quiz games (Gainax had a popular stripping quiz game franchise, Dennō Gakuen / Cybernetic Hi-School), and so on) though the latter have fallen out of favor. Genres ranges from straight harem dating sim (lots of girls become irrestably attracted to you so you have to choose one—or more) to fantasy (the world is in danger and if you don't pick one of the girls who is irresistably attracted to you the world might end), science fiction (10,000 years into the future, you transfer to another school station where several girls instantly become irresistably attracted to you and you have to pick one before you fail your spaceship fighter pilot's license exam) to <a href="chōkyō">chōkyō</a> (there are several girls whom you <a href="#gōkan">rape</a> until they like it). Most feature a "hands free" feature so the dialog flies by and your hands can enjoy other things…like…eating a doughnut…or clipping your toenails…or <a href="onani">jacking off</a> so many times you bleed. Such is the joy and convenience of eroge. A common Western perspective is "why don't you just read a manga instead?" to which the answer "There are voices! And choices! And color! And sometimes the pictures are animated GIFs!" can be rather underwhelming.

The eroge industry is closely related to the <a href="#seinen">seinen</a> manga and <a href="#hentai">hentai</a> anime industries. <a name="etchi">エッチ</a> etchi The romanization "ecchi" is common, but incorrect in current Hepburn romaniazation. Possibly from a non-standard Japanese pronunciation of the letter "H". Usually used in English as a short form for <a href="#hentai">hentai</a>, or can mean (in Japanese) "perverted" or "sex" (as in "etchi o suru" (エッチをする)). When referring to adult material usually tends to mean material which is not perverted enough to be true hentai (i.e., softcore pornography; see <a href="#lime">lime</a>). <a name="F">F</a>

<a name="fashion-health">ファッションヘルス</a> fashion health
("fasshon herusu")		 A type of <a href="#fūzoku">brothel</a> offering a variety of services (e.g., <a href="#anaru zeme">anaru zeme</a> and <a href="#lip-service">lip service</a>) that stop short of actual <a href="#honban">intercourse</a>. Often abbreviated to "<a href="#health">health</a>" (ヘルス "herusu"). The name comes from the "fashion massage" (ファッションマッサージ "fasshon massāji") that was their original specialty; invented in <a href="#soapland">soaplands</a> for customers who wanted something cheaper than honban, it consists of a wash followed by <a href="#tekoki">masturbation</a>. Healths are a step up in both price and service from <a href="#pink-salon">pink salons</a>, but not as fancy as soaplands.
<a name="fechi">フェチ</a> fechi "Fetish" directly from the English.
<a name="ferachio">フェラチオ</a> ferachio From the English "fellatio" (in turn from the Latin) meaning to give a man oral sex. Often abbreviated to "fera" (フェラ), "ofera" (おフェラ(?); slightly softer) or "fuefuki" (笛吹 / 笛吹き "flute player"), it is also referred to as "shakuhachi" (尺八)—the name of an old Japanese instrument (end-blown flute). Compare with <a href="#irumachio">irumachio</a>, and see <a href="#senbōkyō">senbōkyō</a>, a specific type of fellatio.
<a name="fujoshi">腐女子</a> fujoshi Lit. "rotten woman/girl", punning on "fujoshi" (婦女子 "woman; grown woman; wife"). A female fan of <a href="#yaoi">yaoi</a>; a female yaoi otaku/fangirl. A term created to avoid the negative connotation of "otaku".
<a name="fundoshi">褌</a> fundoshi As in the traditional underwear worn by Japanese males consisting of a (wound) loincloth. Refers to pornography with girls wearing said underwear and writhing around, in a probably very erotic fashion to people who like sumo. And girls. In thongs. Fundoshi are occasionally worn at festivals by both genders and suffer the terrible consequence of being easily displaced; not to mention the <a href="#mekosuji">camel-toe</a> wedgie effect… Not to be confused with the sumo wrestling loincloth (回し / 廻し "mawashi"). See also <a href="#pantsu">pantsu</a> and <a href="#seifuku-fechi">seifuku fechi</a>.
<a name="funnyō">糞尿</a> funnyō "Scatology". Also known as "sukatto" (スカット) from the English word "scat", and "unko purē" (うんこプレイ "shit play"). ("Unko" (うんこ; "shit; poop") is one of the two primary slang terms for feces, the other of which is "kuso" (屎 "(1) shit; damn; (2) (colloquial) feces; excrement"). "Unchi" (うんち) is a cuter, (even) more childlike version of the former, used especially by girls.) Refers to any sexual play involving feces, also including <a href="#kanchō">enemas</a> and <a href="#kakuchō">inflation/distention</a>. The feces in funnyō is often more voluminous than physically possible on a Western diet (perhaps so for leaf-eating South American natives).
<a name="furry">ファリー</a> furry
("fārī")		 A genre of animated/drawn <a href="#hentai">hentai</a> in which sex involves anthropomorphic animal–like creatures based on one of any number of real or mythical animals (for example, dogs, cats, tigers, dragons). Such furries have human characteristics in that usually they are capable of speech and undertake human-like lifestyles, but importantly, they still have animal instincts and the resulting sex scenes are more animalistic in nature, from which the genre draws some of its thrill. A large furry (over 50 m) is sometimes referred to as a "macrofurry" (マクロファリー "makurofarī"). Note that, despite its reputation, most of the Western version of the genre is not porn.
<a name="futanari">二形 / ふたなり</a> futanari Lit. "double-form". Hermaphrodites—"ryōsei" (両性; "both sexes") is the formal term. Strictly refers to characters with both sets of genitalia (<a href="#chinpo">penis</a> and <a href="#manko">vagina</a>) and <a href="#oppai">breasts</a>. This is usually achieved either by freak of nature or by a potion/pill/magic spell/scientific experiment of some variety. Girls with male genitalia but lacking vaginas are also referred to as futanari, but are usually categorized under <a href="#shemale">shemale</a> or <a href="#newhalf">newhalf</a>. Boys with vaginas are very rare in <a href="#hentai">hentai</a>.
<a name="futsū">普通</a> futsū "General; ordinary; usual [breasts]". <a href="#oppai">Breasts</a> that are just average in size—smaller than <a href="#kyonyū">kyonyū</a> and larger than <a href="#hinnyū">hinnyū</a>.
<a name="fūzoku">風俗</a> fūzoku "Sex service; sex industry". Also "fūzoku eigyo" (風俗営業 "sex industry"). Used to refer to Japan's "sexual culture" (originally "fūzoku" meant, and still means, "manners; customs", which "firstly reminded people of social phenomena like a vogue or a fashion" (see note below)), i.e. <a href="#fashion-health">fashion healths</a> (brothels), <a href="#image-club">image clubs</a> (themed <a href="#cosplay">cosplay</a> brothels), <a href="#no-pan-kissa">no-pan kissa</a> (no panties cafes), <a href="#osawari-pub">osawari pubs</a> (breast groping nightclubs), <a href="#pink-salon">pink salons</a> (brothels specializing in oral sex), and <a href="#soapland">soaplands</a> (bath-based brothels), and <a href="#terekura">terekura</a> (telephone clubs), amongst many others. Part of the larger <a href="#mizu-shōbai">mizu shōbai</a> (night-time entertainment industry).

    <a name="gaman-kao">我慢顔</a> gaman kao "Patience face". Face pornography in which only the woman's face can be seen during sex (commonly as it is sticking through a wall and the rest of the body and the man are obscured) so that the filming focuses on the sexual expressions as she is shafted from behind. Niche pornography.
    <a name="ganki">がんき</a> ganki Also called "ganmen kijō" (顔面騎乗; lit. "face mount"; of which "ganki" is probably a contraction); both: "facesitting; queening". The act of a woman sitting on a man's face as he gives her cunnilingus and the woman pressing down while this occurs. A popular service in Japanese <a href="#soapland">soaplands</a>, and associated with <a href="#debusen">debusen</a>.
    <a name="ganmen-kōgeki">顔面攻撃</a> ganmen kōgeki Lit. "face attack". A variation on S/M play in which the captive girl's face is contorted to make it look ugly so she is embarrassed and feels dominated, and the men feel domineering and virile. Commonly used are fingers in nostrils or mouth, or retractor devices, attached to a headpiece or collar, which hold open the mouth or nostrils. The nose-specific version is called "hana-zeme" (鼻責め "nose play"), and the retractor devices for it are "hana hukku" (鼻フッウ "nose hook").
    <a name="gansha">顔射</a> gansha To ejaculate on your partner's face. A synonym for <a href="#bukkake">bukkake</a>. Also see <a href="#own-goal">own goal</a>.
    <a name="gay">ゲイ</a> gay
    ("gei")    		 Homosexual males; a neutral term. Effeminate gay men are generally referred to as "<a href="#neko">neko</a>" (the same term as used for feminine <a href="#rezubian">lesbians</a>). Dominant gays are referred to as "<a href="#seme">seme</a>" ("top") and (less commonly in English) <a href="#tachi">tachi</a> (another term also used for lesbians), and submissive ones as "<a href="#uke">uke</a>" ("bottom"). "Barazoku" (薔薇族 "rose tribe", from the early and influential <a href="http://intersections.anu.edu.au/issue12/aoki.html">gay men's magazine of the same title</a>) refers to the quality of being gay.     <a name="girls-bar">ガールズバー</a> girl's bar
    ("gāruzu bā")    		 Paradoxically a bar for men containing young women; a type of <a href="#kyaba-kura">kyaba kura</a>. These are rather pedestrian affairs despite the promising title. Basically a place for salarymen to go and drink after work, they are bars where a fixed price is paid for a fixed time. The salaryman can then choose his girl, who will talk to him, sing songs with him, and furnish him with drinks (all inclusive in the price), all at the bar, as opposed to one-on-one at a table (as at the pricier <a href="hostess-club">hostess clubs</a>, which are also more heavily regulated under the law). Most importantly, she will wipe the condensation from his glass so he doesn't get wet fingers when he picks it up. Some girl's bars feature bartenders in <a href="#cosplay">cosplay</a>, and consequentially higher prices.
    <a name="gōkan">強姦</a> gōkan "Rape" (this is the official legal term). "Ryōjoku" (陵辱 / 凌辱 "(1) insult; affront; disgrace; indignity; (2) sexual assault; rape") and "rēpu" (レイプ "rape", from the English) are also commonly used. Non-consensual sexual acts—the staple of Japanese pornography. Unlike Western porn where the female generally dominates the male, making him <a href="#orgasm">orgasm</a> without losing control herself, in Japan it seems to be generally considered that a girl shouting "Iya! Konai de!" ("No! Don't come near!") is actually saying "Yes! Do me now!" and that this avoidance play is part of the whole sexual act. Believe what you like. Not to be confused with <a href="#gōkon">gōkon</a> (group blind dates).
    <a name="gokkun">ゴックン</a> gokkun Onomatopoeia for the sound of swallowing. Specifically refers to the act of <a href="#kōnai-hassha">ejaculating into the mouth</a> and the swallowing of said <a href="#zāmen">semen</a>. There may or may not be a degree of play with the semen before swallowing, and there may be any number of rounds of semen swallowed. Girls who do this are called "gokkun girls" (ゴックンガルズ "gokkun garuzu"). See also <a href="#bukkake">bukkake</a>.
    <a name="gōkon">合コン</a> gōkon "Group blind date". From "gōdō konpa" (合同コンパ; "gōdō" (合同 "combination") + "konpa" ("party"; from the English/German/French words for "company")). A male and a female acquaintance each get a group of their friends—of an equal number and of their respective genders (e.g., three boys and three girls including the organizers)—together to meet the other group at a restaurant, bar, <a href="#karaoke-box">karaoke box</a>, or similar place. The purpose is more to socialize through drinking, games, and conversation than to hook up for casual sex (as opposed to the object of <a href="#nanpa">nanpa</a>), though the exchange of telephone numbers is the ultimate object, and sex may result. In <a href="#seinen">seinen</a> manga, gōkon tend to wrong for at least one of female partyers, due to sleazy (alleged) friends and their sleazier boyfriends, resulting in <a href="#gōkan">rape</a> or worse.
    <a name="gomu">護謨 / ゴム</a> gomu "Gum". Condom. "Kondōmu" (コンドーム) from the English is also used.
    <a name="gravure-idol">グラビアアイドル / グラドル</a> gravure idol
    ("gurabia aidoru" / "guradoru")    		 From "photo" + "rotogravure" (called "gravure page" (グラビアページ "gurabia pēji") in Japanese; a kind of printing process, once a staple of newspaper photo features, which is still used for the commercial printing of magazines) and "idol" (the Japanese term referring to a famous media personality, especially a young girl), gravure idols are young female models who pose in skimpy <a href="#mizugi">swimsuits</a> and other revealing clothing for spreads in glossy magazines and <a href="#shashinshū">photobooks</a> aimed at young men. Basically softcore pornography for the teenage populace. Compare the more adventurous <a href="#nūdoru">nūdoru</a>.
    <a name="guro">グロ</a> guro From "ero-guro" (エログロ), a contraction of the English "erotic and grotesque nonsense" (エログロナンセンス, "ero guro nansensu"). Extreme violence involving the shedding of blood. May involve <a href="#ryōki">dismemberment</a>, disembowelment, and snuff (<a href="#shikan">death</a>) themes. Also includes more specific fetishes such as <a href="#nikutai-kaizō">body remodeling</a>, <a href="#suitcase-girl">suitcase girl</a>, and <a href="#iryō-fechi">medical fetish</a>.

    <a name="H">H</a>

    <a name="ha-daisuki">歯大好き</a> ha daisuki "Tooth love". A rather unique Japanese fetish about teeth—the brushing, flossing, and rinsing of same, generally without associated nudity or sexual acts. I would guess that the pleasure comes partly from a strange love of teeth and partly from <a href="#sesshishō">voyeurism</a>.
    <a name="hadaka">裸</a> hadaka Lit. "nude"—the standard word. Also refers to a brand of erotic softcore pornography in which idols perform various everyday tasks such as housework, cooking, going out to the shops etc. in only one item of clothing (e.g. socks, neck tie, ribbon (the case of a ribbon, it is often tied as if around a present)). Origin of the famous "naked apron" (ネケドエプロン "nekedo apuron", also called "hadaka apuron" (裸エプロン)). See also <a href="#seifuku-fechi">seifuku fechi</a>.
    <a name="hair-nude">ヘアヌード</a> hair nude
    ("hea nūdo")    		 An image, especially a photograph, containing uncensored <a href="#inmō">pubic hair</a>. As with <a href="#zenra">complete nudity</a>, not unusual in pornography, you might say. However, until 1991 Japanese <a href="#ken'etsu">censorship</a> law forbade the exposure of not only genitals, but the hair covering them. This was such an issue that an <a href="#AV">AV</a> star, Kaoru Kuroki, made a career out of her <a href="#teimō">unshaven</a> <a href="#wakige-fechi">armpits</a>, using them to ridicule the ban. This changed with the publication of two <a href="#shashinshū">photobooks</a> featuring the forbidden thatch, which resulted in the retroactive reinterpretation of Article 175 of the Penal/Criminal Code (<a href="#Kei-Hō">Kei Hō Dai 175 Jō</a>) to allow hair nudes.
    <a name="hamedori">ハメ撮り</a> hamedori Lit. "fucking; screwing; having sex", "takes (e.g. of photographs); exposures". Taking (first person) point of view (POV) photographs/video during sex, usually by the male; <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gonzo_pornography">gonzo pornography</a>. A popular genre of <a href="#AV">AV</a>, both because it is cheap to make and can be made <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guerrilla_filmmaking">guerrilla-style</a> (by both amateurs and professionals), and because it brings the viewer into the action. Compare with <a href="#nanpa-tōsatsu">nanpa tōsatsu</a>.
    <a name="hananoshita fechi">鼻の下フェチ</a> hananoshita fechi "Philtrum <a href="#fechi">fetish</a>". Obsession and attraction to the area between the nose and the upper lip, which is bordered by two ridges.
    <a name="harikata">張形</a> harikata / harigata "Dildo". Also: "dildo" (ディルド "dīrudo") and "kokeshi" (コケシ; after the traditional wooden dolls). For the strap-on type, see <a href="#penisu-bando">penisu bando / peniban</a>. See also <a href="#baibu">baibu</a> and <a href="#seigu">seigu</a>.
    <a name="health">ヘルス</a> health
    ("herusu")    		 A common <a href="#fūzoku">sex industry</a> euphemism for <a href="#ferachio">fellatio</a> or prostitution, as in <a href="#fashion-health">fashion health</a> and the subsequent <a href="#delivery-health">delivery health</a>, <a href="#hotel-health">hotel health</a>, and <a href="#mansion-health">mansion health</a>.
    <a name="henshin">変身</a> henshin "Transformation". Refers generally to any transformation (most commonly that of magical girls in anime), but in a <a href="#hentai">hentai</a> context refers to gender transformations in which the subject changes gender due to magic or dodgy science; usually with hilarious (and erotic) consequences. Note that transformation is actual, as opposed to <a href="#josō">josō</a>.
    <a name="hentai">変態</a> hentai (Well, it wouldn't be complete without this!) "Perverted" (also, "transformation; metamorphosis", as in biology). Basically refers to anything abnormal or perverted, including people (as in referring to perverts). Outside Japan generally used to refer to animated and drawn anime-style pornography. Compare with <a href="#ero">ero</a>, <a href="#etchi">etchi</a>, and <a href="#lemon">lemon</a>. For much greater detail on the term, see:
    <a name="hi-ero">非エロ</a> hi ero "Non-erotic". For example, <a href="#dōjinshi">dōjinshi</a> that have no sex or nudity. Paradoxically, they must be labelled "non-ero" since the default state of dōjinshi (at least in the minds of many) is various types of filth and so the wholesome material must be indicated so as not to disappoint the otaku customers.
    <a name="hinnyū">貧乳 / 微乳</a> hinnyū Lit. "poor chest". Girls with small breasts (c. A–B cup size). Does not refer to lolis (Lolitas—see <a href="#lolicon">lolicon</a>) who have no <a href="#oppai">breasts</a> at all (<a href="#munyū">munyū</a> and <a href="#petanko">petanko</a>). Commonly used as older small girls with small breasts satisfy the lolicon urges of the otaku populace while still being legal. Smaller than <a href="#futsū">futsū</a> and larger than <a href="#binyū">binyū</a>.
    <a name="hitozuma">人ずま</a> hitozuma "Someone (else)'s wife". Pornography involving sex with married women by men who are not their husbands. Obviously, the thrill is in the <a href="#netorari">adultery</a>, but can also involve <a href="#shotacon">shotacon</a>. The genre first became popular with the live-action Apartment Wife: Affair In the Afternoon (団地妻　昼下がりの情事 / 団地妻　昼下りの情事, Danchizuma Hirusagari no Jōji (November 1971)), the first of Nikkatsu's "Roman porno" films. In large part a subset of the <a href="#jukujo">jukujo</a> fetish.
    <a name="honban">本番</a> honban Lit. "real performance"/"real thing". Real life meaning refers to the movie or sports industry in which it means "one take" or "crucial game", but has become a euphemism for sexual intercourse (coitus), especially in brothels or other <a href="#fūzoku">shady night places</a>. Japan's Anti-Prostitution Law/Prostitution Prevention Law of 1956 (売春防止法, "Baishun Bōshi Hō", which is Act No. 118 of that year) specifically prohibits <a href="#baishun">coitus for money</a>.
    <a name="hōnyō">放尿</a> hōnyō "Urination". Known in the West as "watersports", "pissplay", and "golden showers"; refers to sexual acts revolving around urination. Acts involve the drinking of said <a href="#shōben">urine</a>, bathing in said urine, and the squirting of said urine into various orifices in which, suffice to say, it doesn't belong. There are two types in pornography: "gamen hōnyō" (我慢放尿) or face urination (self explanatory), and "<a href="#yagai">yagai</a> hōnyō" (野外放尿) or open air urination involving videos of girls urinating in public places—a type of <a href="#roshutsushō">exhibitionism</a>. The act of watching a girl urinate is "hōnyō kansatsu" (放尿観察).
    <a name="host-club">ホストクラブ</a> host club
    ("hosuto kurabu")    		 A <a href="#hostess-club">hostess club</a> for female customers, who pay for male company. Popularized in the (<a href="hi-ero">hi ero</a>) manga/anime Ouran High School Host Club.
    <a name="hostess-club">ホステスクラブ</a> hostess club
    ("hosutesu kurabu")    		 A nightclub employing primarily female staff, which caters to males seeking drinks and attentive conversation (including flirtation; summarized as the Three A's: attention, arousal, and alcohol). Hostess clubs charge not only for the drinks and any food, but also by the hour for each hostess who spends time with a customer. While hostesses may date customers outside of work, sometimes for money or gifts, most mainstream hostess clubs are not brothels (see <a href="#fūzoku">fūzoku</a>), but part of the <a href="#mizu-shōbai">mizu shōbai</a>. A "snack (bar)" (スナックバー "sunakku bā") is a smaller, low key version of a hostess club that serves food (often just snacks on the bar) in order to circumvent the law mandating an 11 p.m. closing time; the <a href="#girls-bar">girl's bar</a> similarly tries to evade regulation by placing the staff behind the bar from the customers.
    <a name="hotel-health">ホテルヘルス</a> hotel health
    ("hoteru herusu")    		 An order-and-take-out <a href="#fūzoku">sex business</a>, whose name is derived from <a href="#fashion-health">fashion health</a> and is often abbreviated "hoteheru" (ホテヘル). Customers visit the shop, chose a woman and sometimes a <a href="#cosplay">costume</a> for her, pay the fee, and then adjourn to a nearby <a href="#love-hotel">love hotel</a> to meet and consummate the transaction. Most hoteheru clubs strictly forbid <a href="#honban">sexual intercourse</a>.

    <a name="image-club">イメージクラブ / イメクラ</a> image club
    ("imēji kurabu" / "imekura")    		 Part of the <a href="#fūzoku">sex industry</a>, this is a themed brothel in which the <a href="#baishun">prostitutes</a> therein <a href="#cosplay">dress up</a> in various <a href="#seifuku-fechi">uniforms</a> and perform set scenes in appropriately decorated rooms. For example, a school girl with the traditional sailor uniform (sailor fuku) in a classroom, an office lady (OL) in a train car (see <a href="#chikankōi">chikankōi</a>), a nurse in a hospital room, or any number of other scenarios.
    <a name="inkaku">陰核</a> inkaku "Clitoris"—the clinical term. "Kuritorisu" (クリトリス) from the English is also used, as are the derivatives "kuri-chan" (クリちゃん; "more affectionate" than "kuritorisu") and "kurimame" (クリ豆 lit. "clit bean"—cuter than "kuritorisu"). "Sane" (実 / 核 lit. "(1) (obscure) pit (of a fruit); stone; (2) core") is a vulgar term for it. See also <a href="#manko">manko</a> and <a href="#shikyū">shikyū</a>.
    <a name="inkakuhidai">陰核肥大</a> inkakuhidai "<a href="#inkaku">Clitoris</a> enlargement". (Fictional) <a href="#hentai">hentai</a> involving girls whose clitoris enlarges to the point of being like a <a href="#chinpo">penis</a> and then the use as such. Similar in fetish terms to <a href="#futanari">futanari</a>, but without any gender <a href="#henshin">transformation</a>. Enlargement may be achieved by injections, pills, or other means. The enlarged clitoris itself may take on the characteristics of an actual penis or remain smooth and bulletlike, depending on the artist's discretion. Either way, it's much hotter than <a href="#penisu-bando">strap-on dildos</a>.
    <a name="inkeihidai">陰茎肥大</a> inkeihidai "<a href="#chinpo">Penis</a> expansion". (Fictional) <a href="#hentai">hentai</a> in which the man's penis is small but by magic, science or otherwise suddenly becomes large and virile, which is then used on girls to greater effect than before and with much heavy moaning (possibly to the point of <a href="#monzetsu">monzetsu</a>). If only things were so simple in real life…
    <a name="inmō">陰毛</a> inmō "Pubic hair". See <a href="#hair-nude">hair nude</a>, <a href="#ken'etsu">ken'etsu</a>, <a href="#maebari">maebari</a>, <a href="#teimō">teimō</a>, and <a href="#wakamezake">wakamezake</a>; for the lack of it, see <a href="#paipan">paipan</a> and <a href="#tsurupeta">tsurupeta</a>.
    <a name="irumachio">イルマチオ</a> irumachio "Fellatio; face fucking". Oral sex in which the male is the active party and owner of the orifice is passive—the recipient's head is kept still and the man thrusts his <a href="#chinpo">penis</a> in and out of their throat. The Japanese is derived from the Latin "irrumatio". The converse of <a href="#ferachio">ferachio</a>. Usually results in vomiting and other such unsavoury and thoroughly unsexy things. Or a semen shot to the uvula.
    <a name="iryō-fechi">医療フェチ</a> iryō fechi "Medical <a href="#fechi">fetish</a>". Fetish revolving around medical play. Encompasses many other fetishes including nurses' <a href="#seifuku-fechi">uniforms</a>, <a href="#keisoku-fechi">measurement fetish</a>, <a href="#broken-dolls">broken dolls</a> fetish, <a href="#kusuko">gynecological exam fetish</a>, <a href="#kanchō">enemas</a> etc. Hopefully doesn't extend into <a href="#guro">guro</a>, but you never know.     <a name="joō-sama">女王様</a> joō-sama Lit. "queen". Refers to a dominatrix—i.e. a woman who dominates in S/M play. Compare with the gender neutral <a href="#reversible">reversible</a>, and the homosexual <a href="#neko">neko</a>, <a href="#seme">seme</a>, <a href="#tachi">tachi</a>, and <a href="#uke">uke</a>.
    <a name="josō">女装</a> josō "Wearing female clothing". Cross dressing or transvestitism. Another term, specifically for a cross-dressing (but <a href="#seiteki-shikō">heterosexual</a>) boy, is "otoko no ko" (男の娘 lit. "boy as girl"), a play on "otoko no ko" (男の子 lit. "boy child"). Other gender specific terms include "josō shōnen" (女装少年 "cross-dressing boy"), "josō danshi" (女装男子 "cross-dressing youth/young man"), <a href="#okama">okama</a>, and <a href="#onabe">onabe</a>. Refers to pornography in which people dress up as the opposite sex (usually men or boys dressing as women or girls). Such cross-dressers are commonly known in English as "<a href="http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=trap">traps</a>" thanks to 4chan (from the Return of the Jedi quote: Controller: "Admiral, we have enemy ships in sector 47." Admiral Ackbar: "It's a trap!"; see also <a href="#shotacon">shotacon</a>), "josō" is often mistaken for <a href="#shemale">shemale</a> or <a href="#newhalf">newhalf</a> in <a href="#hentai">hentai</a>.     <a name="jūkan">獣姦</a> jūkan "Bestiality". Sex with animals, which exists in Japanese pornography as it does in underground Western fare. Of course, in animated and drawn <a href="#hentai">hentai</a>, bestiality takes on a new meaning with <a href="#furry">furry</a> as well as the less niche <a href="#kemonomimi">kemonomimi</a>.
    <a name="jukujo">熟女</a> jukujo Lit. "ripe woman"—"attractive middle aged lady". The Japanese believe that women reach sexual maturity between 35 and 45, with implied great sexual experience. In the case of <a href="#eroge">eroge</a>, <a href="#ero">ero</a> anime, and <a href="#seinen">seinen</a> manga, this may be true, but it is also often the case that the lady in question has little experience and a great well of built-up, suppressed lust.     <a name="kakuchō">拡張</a> kakuchō "Expansion/enlargement". Applies mainly in the way of <a href="#BE">breast expansion</a> in which the <a href="#oppai">breasts</a> suddenly expand for the usual reasons (magic spell, potion, science) in drawn or animated <a href="#hentai">hentai</a> (and sometimes mainstream anime—Negima! being the main culprit), but would also refer to <a href="#inkeihidai">penis expansion</a> and <a href="#inkakuhidai">clitoris enlargement</a>. Also refers to the fictional <a href="#fechi">fetish</a> in which liquids are applied by the <a href="#manko">vagina</a>, mouth, or <a href="#ketsu-no-ana">anus</a>, usually by an <a href="#kanchō">enema</a>-type device, to such an extent that the abdomen expands so the girl looks <a href="#ninpu">pregnant</a>. This is usually portrayed as part of extreme S/M play with stereotypical lines such as "It's going to burst" etc. etc.
    <a name="kanchō">浣腸</a> kanchō "Enema"; "enema" (エネマ) from the English is also used. "Kanchō purē" (浣腸プレイ(?) "emema play") and "<a href="#ero">ero</a> kanchō" (エロ浣腸(?) "erotic enema") refer to the <a href="#fechi">fetish</a>. Kanchō strictly refers to liquids applied rectally to induce defecation, but can also involve <a href="#kakuchō">expansion</a> and doesn't have to involve <a href="#funnyō">scatology</a>. The enema is usually water, but in more perverse material can be <a href="#shōben">urine</a> (directly connected by catheter or from another character), or even <a href="#zāmen">semen</a>. It is usually portrayed as part of the submissive role of S/M—unlike urination which seems to take a more dominant role, the act of inducing someone to squirt liquids out of their <a href="#ketsu-no-ana">anus</a> is undoubtedly more embarrassing and therefore submissive.
    <a name="kannō-shōsetsu">官能小説</a> kannō shōsetsu "Erotic novel; amorous novel; pornographic novel" (lit.: "sensuality/carnality novel"). Prose pornography, a genre of fiction in Japan, and the subject of the first nationwide ban on <a href="#waisetsu">obscenity</a> in the early eighteenth century, though the <a href="#ken'etsu">censorship</a> continued into the twentieth, with the Japanese publication of Lady Chatterley's Lover being contested in a famous court case. Published serially in fiction magazines as well as in book form. <a href="#eroge">Eroge</a> are often adapted into erotic light novels, and a few novels have been made into <a href="#ero">ero</a> anime.
    <a name="Kanzei-Hō">関税法第69条の11 / 関税法第六十九条の十一</a> Kanzei Hō Dai 69 Jō no 11 / Kanzei Hō Dai Rokujū Kyū Jō no Jūichi Article 69, Paragraph 11 of the Customs Law/Customs Duties Law (関税法, "Kanzei Hō", which is Act No. 61 of 1954). The Lesser Satan (at least for non-Japanese otaku). Since 2006 the governing regulation that forbids the importation of pornography into Japan (previously it was Article 21 of the Customs Tariff Law/Fixed Tariffs Law/Customs Standards Law (関税定率法, "Kanzei Teiritsu Hō"; Act No. 54 of 1910)).

    Goods prohibited from importation under the Customs Law include the following articles in eleven categories.[…] 8. Books, drawings, sculptures and other articles that are considered to injure public safety or morals.

    The law upon which internal Japanese <a href="#ken'etsu">censorship</a> of <a href="#waisetsu">obscenity</a> is based is Article 175 of the Penal/Criminal Code (<a href="#Kei-Hō">Kei Hō Dai 175 Jō</a>).
    <a name="kaomoji-fechi">顔文字フェチ</a> kaomoji fechi "Emoticon <a href="#fechi">fetish</a>". Pornography drawn using ASCII characters or involving characters originally drawn using ASCII. Hopefully more an amusing diversion rather than an actual fetish, but then again…
    <a name="karaoke-box">カラオケボックス</a> karaoke box
    ("karaoke bokkusu")    		 An establishment consisting of multiple rooms containing karaoke equipment, usually rented out for time periods. Since 1) a party atmosphere is encouraged, the rental cost is relatively cheap compared to a <a href="#love-hotel">love hotel</a>, and 2) the rooms are—by definition—soundproofed, they have been used as venues for sex and <a href="#baishun">prostitution</a>. As a countermeasure large windows for the individual rooms have become commonplace, and sometimes security cameras are also used, but the entirety of the rooms may still not be visible from the outside. One of the popular venues for <a href="#gōkon">gōkon</a> (group blind dates).
    <a name="kegadoru">怪我ドル / ケガドル</a> kegadoru "Injured doll", from "kega" (怪我 "injury") + "doru" (ドル "doll", or from "idol" (アイドル "aidoru")). See <a href="#broken-dolls">broken dolls</a>.
    <a name="Kei-Hō">刑法第175条 / 刑法 第百七十五条</a> Kei Hō Dai 175 Jō / Kei Hō Dai Hyaku Shichi Jūgo Jō Article 175 of the Penal/Criminal Code (刑法 Kei Hō, which is Act No. 45 of 1907). Also known by its title, "Waisetsumono Hanpu Nado" (わいせつ物頒布等 "Distribution of Obscene Objects"). The Great Satan. This is the law on which (internal) Japanese <a href="#ken'etsu">censorship</a> of <a href="#waisetsu">obscenity</a> is based.

    A person who distributes, sells or displays in public an obscene document, drawing or other objects shall be punished by imprisonment with work for not more than 2 years, a fine of not more than 2,500,000 yen or a petty fine. The same shall apply to a person who possesses the same for the purpose of sale.

    Under the current interpretation of Article 175, depictions of bare genitalia, either separate or conjoined, are forbidden. Prior to 1991, depictions of <a href="#inmō">pubic hair</a> were also illegal. That year Article 175 was retroactively re-interpreted (not amended) by the public prosecutor to allow pubic hair, thanks to the publication of two <a href="#shashinshū">photobooks</a>: Kanako Higuchi's Water Fruit (in June) and (particularly) Rie Miyazawa's Santa Fe (in November; a best seller). These were the first legal <a href="#hair-nude">hair nudes</a>.

    The law upon which Japanese censorship of external material is based is Article 69, Paragraph 11 of the Customs Law/Customs Duties Law (<a href="#Kanzei-Hō">Kanzei Hō Dai 69 Jō no 11</a>).
    <a name="keisoku-fechi">計測フェチ</a> keisoku fechi "Measurement <a href="#fechi">fetish</a>". Fetish involving the measurement of girls' anatomy and clothing. Not content with just vital statistics, measurements include <a href="#inkaku">clitoris</a> length, <a href="#manko">vaginal</a> depth and diameter, skirt and sock length, and of course, the famous <a href="#zettai-ryōiki">zettai ryōiki</a>.
    <a name="kemeko-zuri">けめこずり</a> kemeko zuri From "hair" (毛 "ke") + "pussy" (メコ "meko"—see <a href="#manko">manko</a>) + "zuri" (onomatopoeia for a rubbing sound). <a href="#soapland">Soapland</a> service in which a girl rubs <a href="#lotion">sexual lubricant</a> onto a man's body using her body but mainly her extensive <a href="#inmō">pubic hair</a>. A type of <a href="#lotion-play">lotion play</a>.
    <a name="kemono">獣</a> kemono "Beast". The Japanese word referring to humanoid beast–type <a href="#hentai">hentai</a>. See <a href="#furry">furry</a>.
    <a name="kemono-henshin">獣変身</a> kemono henshin "Animal <a href="#henshin">transformation</a>". Animated/drawn <a href="#hentai">hentai</a> in which a girl starts to change into a humanoid beast (<a href="#furry">furry</a>/<a href="#kemono">kemono</a>), usually with the acquisition of animal instincts, and, most importantly, mating behavior. Often the results of some kind of "scientific experiment gone wrong" if the storyline feels it fit to give an explanation.
    <a name="kemonomimi">獣耳 / けものミミ / ケモノミミ </a> kemonomimi / kemomimi "Beast ears". A special kind of <a href="#cosplay">cosplay</a> in which the girl wears animal ears and sometimes a tail and responds with sentences ending in the animal's appropriate noise. The most popular type is <a href="#nekomimi">nekomimi</a>. Other common types include the <a href="#bunny-girl">bunny girl</a> with usamimi (うさ耳 "bunny ears"); inumimi (犬耳 / イヌミミ / イヌ耳 "dog ears"; "woof"/"bow-wow" is ワンワン "wanwan"); and ushimimi (牛耳 "cow ears"; "moo" is モーモー "mōmō").     <a name="ken'etsu">検閲</a> ken'etsu "Censorship". Censorship in Japan, including of <a href="#waisetsu">obscenity</a>, has a long history, one which began in the seventeen century, though the first nationwide law prohibiting pornography was promulgated in the early eighteenth century. Censorship has continued to the present day, despite the Japanese constitution of 1947:

    Article 21. Freedom of assembly and association as well as speech, press and all other forms of expression are guaranteed. No censorship shall be maintained, nor shall the secrecy of any means of communication be violated.

    The current national culprits are Article 175 of the Penal/Criminal Code (<a href="#Kei-Hō">Kei Hō Dai 175 Jō</a>; the Great Satan) of 1907, and Article 69, Paragraph 11 of the Customs Law/Customs Duties Law (<a href="#Kanzei-Hō">Kanzei Hō Dai 69 Jō no 11</a>; the Lesser Satan) of 1954.

    Notable dates in recent history:

    • In 1991 Article 175 was re-interpreted (not amended) to allow <a href="#inmō">pubic hair</a>, thanks to the publication of two <a href="#shashinshū">photobooks</a>: Kanako Higuchi's Water Fruit (in June) and (particularly) Rie Miyazawa's bestselling Santa Fe (in November). These were the first legal <a href="#hair-nude">hair nudes</a>.
    • In 2002 the artist Beauty Hair (Suwa Yuuji) and the president and chief editor of his publisher, Shobunkan, were arrested and tried for releasing the manga volume Misshitsu (蜜室 Honey Room) without censorship, in the first such trial in more than twenty years. Beauty Hair pled guilty to avoid jail, and the case was appealed all the way to the Supreme Court of Japan, which supported the conviction.
    • In 2010, after much public debate and protest, the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly passed "Bill 156", a revision to the 1964 Tokyo Metropolitan Ordinance Regarding the Healthy Development of Youths (東京都青少年の健全な育成に関する条例 "Tōkyō-to Seishōnen no Kenzen na Ikusei ni Kansuru Jōrei"). Bill 156 expanded the definition of "harmful to minors", specifically targeting anime and manga, making the law much more restrictive in what can and can't be produced and sold. Because Tokyo is the national capital, center of the publishing industry, and the country's largest city, this has nationwide implications.

    The Japanese film, video, and video game industries each have their own "voluntary" ratings organizations (respectively, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eirin">Eirin</a> for film; the former <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nihon_Ethics_of_Video_Association">NEVA/"Viderin"</a> and its successor <a href="http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?depth=1&hl=en&rurl=translate.google.com&sl=ja&tl=en&u=http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%25E6%2598%25A0%25E5%2583%258F%25E5%2580%25AB%25E7%2590%2586%25E6%25A9%259F%25E6%25A7%258B">Eizōrin</a>, and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soft_On_Demand#Content_Soft_Association">CSA</a> for video; and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_Entertainment_Rating_Organization">CERO</a>, CSA (again), and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_content_rating_system#Ethics_Organization_of_Computer_Software">EOCS/"Sofurin"</a> for video games), to which companies submit their products for review, in order for those products to be cleared for distribution; each organization has its own standards for what is and is not acceptable. Manga is unique in that it has no such ratings board, and publishers are responsible only to the public prosecutor and police (who might decide to raid them if they believe a publishing house has gotten out of hand; as implied above, this is very rare, however), and public opinion. This results in the application of censorship to <a href="#seinen">seinen</a> manga which is very inconsistent from publisher to publisher, from occasionally none, to virtually nil, to excessive. It also changes depending upon what the publisher thinks they can get away with that week. Methods of censorship in anime, <a href="#eroge">eroge</a>, and manga include <a href="#bokashi">bokashi</a>, <a href="#mosaic">mosaic</a>, and <a href="#suminuri">suminuri</a>, the latter especially on manga. Contrast with <a href="#urabon">urabon</a>.

    <a name="ketsu-no-ana">けつの穴</a> ketsu no ana Lit. "ass hole". Also called "kikuza" (菊座 "chrysanthemum shape") and "anusu" (アヌス). For "ass", see <a href="#shiri">shiri</a>.
    <a name="kikai">奇怪</a> kikai "Strange/bizarre". A general word referring to several fetishes of the weird and (slightly less) wonderful, including: <a href="#nikutai-kaizō">body modification</a>, <a href="#guro">guro</a>, egg laying (<a href="#sanran">sanran</a>), <a href="#kemono-henshin">animal transformation</a>, and other oddness.
    <a name="kikkō shibari">亀甲縛り</a> kikkō shibari Lit. "tortoise shell binding"—"diamond patterned <a href="#shibari">shibari</a>". A common type of <a href="#kinbaku">kinbaku</a>, consisting of of rope tied into a diamond patterned harness—from the neck, around the torso and down through the crotch (the stimulation from which is probably part of the appeal). Often depicted in <a href="#hentai">hentai</a> anime and <a href="#seinen">seinen</a> manga as part of <a href="#roshutsushō">exhibitionism</a>, in which the bound girl or woman is wearing nothing but the rope under a coat. <a href="#shinju">Shinju</a> may be included.
    <a name="kimochi-ii">気持ちいい</a> kimochi ii "This feels good"; "It feels good", from "kimochi" (気持ち "feeling; sensation; mood") + "ii" (いい "good"). In <a href="#hentai">hentai</a> anime, one of the most common pre-<a href="#orgasm">orgasm</a> exclamations.
    <a name="kinbaku">緊縛</a> kinbaku Lit. "tight bind". One of the words for traditional Japanese rope bondage, it describes the sexual act of tying a girl (or man) up using intricate rope patterns and designs in order to extricate maximum aesthetic beauty and also to stimulate the body. The word <a href="#shibari">shibari</a> is also used, but strictly it refers to the tying of anything using rope or twine, whereas kinbaku refers to sexual bondage.     <a name="kinniku">筋肉</a> kinniku "Muscle". Muscular girls. Female bodybuilder fetish—men who like their girls hard and muscularly defined like Ms. Olympia. Almost entirely drawn <a href="#hentai">hentai</a>, since there doesn't seem to be that strange niche of women in Japan that gets obsessed with bodybuilding to insane proportions. And anyway, the exaggeration in drawn hentai is always to the advantage in this case. Presumably it is the ample thigh muscles that are the key muscles in this case. Or perhaps some others that don't bear imagining…
    <a name="kinshinsōkan">近親相姦</a> kinshinsōkan "Incest". Sex with someone related to you. One of the other mainstays of Japanese animated/drawn <a href="#hentai">hentai</a> as well as anime in general, and which even seems to pervade into their traditional stories as well. It doesn't seem that incest is less taboo than in other cultures, but there seems to be a thrill gained from the extra level of depravity that it offers. Sex with direct relatives has specific names: "mother complex" (マザコン "mazakon"), "father complex" (ファザコン "fazakon"), "brother complex"　(ブラザコン "burazakon"), and "sister complex" (シスコン "shisukon").
    <a name="kintama">金玉</a> kintama Lit. "golden ball". The most common slang for testicle. Also just "tama" (玉 "ball"). The formal words are "kōgan" (睾丸 / コウ丸) and "seisō" (精巣). "Kyūsho" (急所 lit. "critical/crucial place"—"male crotch") is used in refined company and sports, especially in regard to what Americans call "groin injures". For fetishes involving testicles, see <a href="#kyochin">kyochin / kyotama</a>, <a href="#tamakeri">tamakeri</a>, and <a href="#tamaname">tamaname</a>.
    <a name="kitanai-kutsushita-fechi">汚い靴下フェチ</a> kitanai kutsushita fechi "Dirty footwear fetish". <a href="#fechi">Fetish</a> involving dirty shoes and/or socks; a sub-type of <a href="#ashi-fechi">ashi fechi</a>. Don't ask.
    <a name="kogal">コギャル</a> kogal
    ("kogyaru")    		 A contraction of "kōkōsei gyaru" (高校生ギャル "senior high school student" + "gal"). Also "gal" (ギャル "gyaru"). A fashion that involves wearing an outfit based on a Japanese school uniform, but with a shortened skirt, <a href="#loose-socks">loose socks</a>, and often dyed hair and a scarf as well. They have a reputation as sexually very loose, and as often engaging in <a href="#enjo-kōsai">enjo kōsai</a> to support their brand-name fashion addictions. Styles in kogal fashion change with the times depending on which idol is currently popular, and there are several subtypes. See also <a href="#seifuku-fechi">seifuku fechi</a>.
    <a name="kōnai-hassha">口内発射</a> kōnai hassha Lit. "inside mouth firing". To come into a girl's mouth, which she hopefully follows with <a href="#gokkun">gokkun</a>. I'm assuming that it refers to her shouting not to come inside her and ending up in her mouth, or various other meanings are also possible. Contrast with <a href="#nakadashi">nakadashi</a>.     <a name="konkuru">コンクール</a> konkuru "Contest", from the French "concours" ("competition; match"). Any pornography involving contests. Can involve cat-fighting between girls or a straight sex contest—for example to see how many men one girl can bring to <a href="#orgasm">orgasm</a> in a set time (real life) or to fill/drink a beaker of <a href="#zāmen">semen</a> (fictional). It brings an element of competition into an otherwise dull sex scene and apparently inflames the male competitive urge.
    <a name="koonago">小女子</a> koonago "Small girls". From the term for "young lancefish". The opposite of <a href="#kyokan-onna">kyokan onna</a>, involves tiny girls pleasuring their relatively giant partners in parts that only tiny girls can reach. Can involve <a href="#nyōdō-sōnyū">urethral play</a> and whole body "<a href="#tekoki">handjobs</a>". At its very worst can involve the swallowing of said girls (vore) or insertion into various orifices. Thankfully this hasn't made it to live action just yet.
    <a name="kōshū-benjo">公衆便所</a> kōshū benjo Lit. "public toilet/rest room". A very derogatory term for "a woman for sexual use by anyone". See the synonymous <a href="#niku-benki">niku benki</a>, and the related <a href="#shintai-ni-rakugaki">shintai ni rakugaki</a> and <a href="#yariman">yariman</a>.
    <a name="kotobazeme">言葉責め / 言葉ぜめ</a> kotobazeme "Word play" ("言葉責め" is the much more common rendering). Sex talk; synonyms are "ingo" (淫語 "indecent language; dirty talk") and "waidan" (猥談 / わい談 "indecent talk"). To make a girl horny by talking dirty. Could also be used to refer to phone sex.
    <a name="kuguri-isu">潜り椅子</a> kuguri isu "Side door chair". Also "sukebe isu" (スケベ椅子 "pervert chair"). A special chair or stool on which a customer sits. There is a hole or holes in the seat so that the girl can get underneath for <a href="#ferachio">fellatio</a>, <a href="#anaru zeme">anaru zeme</a>, etc. Used in the <a href="#fūzoku">sex industry</a>.
    <a name="kuikomi">食い込み</a> kuikomi "To erode". Refers to pulling girl's <a href="#pantsu">panties</a> so that the material bunches thinly and then moving it back and forth in order to stimulate her. Otherwise known as "flossing". See also <a href="#seifuku-fechi">seifuku fechi</a>.
    <a name="kusuko">クスコ</a> kusuko <a href="#manko">Vaginal</a> speculum. From Edouard Gabriel Cusco, the inventor of the eponymous and now-standard two-bladed type of this device. Ties in with <a href="#iryō-fechi">iryō fechi</a>, but generally refers to pornography involving erotic (if they really can be) gynecological exams. I would guess the thrill comes from seeing a girl at their most vulnerable or to be at your most vulnerable. And of course, the following malpractice suit.
    <a name="kyaba-kura">キャバクラ</a> kyaba kura A contraction of "kyabarē kurabu" (キャバレークラブ "cabaret club"). A type of <a href="#hostess-club">hostess club</a>, generally with younger, less experienced hostesses and cheaper prices. Subtypes include <a href="#girls-bar">girl's bars</a>, <a href="#lingerie-pub">lingerie pubs</a>, and <a href="#osawari-pub">osawari pubs</a>.
    <a name="kyochin">巨ちん / 巨玉</a> kyochin / kyotama "Big <a href="#chinpo">penis</a>"/"big <a href="#kintama">balls</a>". Generally refers to male genitalia that are inhuman in proportion (i.e. over 1 foot/30 cm in length, but increasing to sizes unimaginable). Surprisingly, they still fit inside a woman's <a href="#manko">vagina</a> or <a href="#ketsu-no-ana">anus</a> with very little to spare outside. Can be either that large, or achieved by <a href="#inkeihidai">penis expansion</a>. Large balls are obviously compatible with extremely copious volumes of <a href="#zāmen">semen</a> on <a href="#orgasm">orgasm</a>—allows one <a href="#futanari">futanari</a>/man <a href="#bukkake">bukkake</a>. Other words for large penes include "kyokon" (巨根 lit. "large root"; "large penis"), "dekachin" (デカチン "huge dick"), and "futomara" (太マラ "big penis"). Large penes are a staple in <a href="#shunga">shunga</a>.
    <a name="kyokan-onna">巨漢 女</a> kyokan onna "Giant women". Giantess fetish—not only an animated/drawn fetish but also available in live-action form with the help of special effects. Involves women of stupidly large proportions (Godzilla-like) towering above cities with <a href="#manko">vaginas</a> the size of the Channel Tunnel having sex with normal men who could happily climb inside and have a tropical holiday. Basically refers to any pornography in which a size difference between the woman and man is more than 4:1. The opposite is <a href="#koonago">koonago</a>.
    <a name="kyonyū">巨乳</a> kyonyū "Large breasts". This describes <a href="#oppai">breasts</a> that are large but in the natural range, and usually achievable without resorting to cosmetic surgery.     <a name="lemon">レモン</a> lemon
    ("remon")    		 Same as "blue movie" in English. Refers to material containing sexual scenes (in English, especially to erotic fan fiction). Allegedly comes from the Japanese slang for a "loose woman", but the actual etymology may be from the <a href="#hentai">hentai</a> anime anthology series Cream Lemon, which started in 1985. The term does not seem to be used in current Japanese, though "lemon" is often associated with the acid-sweetness of love, especially with first love, so that a first kiss is said to taste of lemon.     <a name="lime">ライム</a> lime
    ("raimu")    		 "Softcore". An erotic piece, but with no actual sex; especially applied to erotic fan fiction. Obviously a progression from "lemon" as in "slightly less immoral"—well, as immoral as citrus fruits get anyway. Compare with <a href="#etchi">etchi</a>.
    <a name="lingerie-pub">ランジェリーパブ</a> lingerie pub
    ("ranjierī pabu")    		 Also shortened to "ran pub" (ランパブ "ran pabu"). A type of <a href="#kyaba-kura">kyaba kura</a> in which the hostesses <a href="#cosplay">wear</a> lingerie. Unlike in a <a href="#osawari-pub">osawari pub</a>, the customers are not allowed to touch the hostesses, placing the ran pub technically in the <a href="#mizu-shōbai">mizu shōbai</a> rather than the <a href="#fūzoku">fūzoku</a>.     <a name="lip-service">リップシャヴィス</a> lip service
    ("rippu sabisu")    		 Refers to all sexual acts from kissing through <a href="#deep-kiss">French kissing</a> to <a href="#ferachio">fellatio</a> and <a href="#tamaname">tamaname</a>. Basically, anything involving lips can be termed "lip service".
    <a name="lolicon">ロリコン</a> lolicon
    ("rorikon")    		 Contraction of "Lolita complex" (ロリータコンプレックス). Lolita complex and lolicon refer to the lust for underage girls ("lolis" in English slang); lolicon can also refer to an individual with such a lust. The term is actually Western and comes from the interpretation of Vladimir Nabakov's 1955 novel Lolita—a tragicomedy about the wooing and extraction of sexual favors from the twelve-year-old Dolores by the novel's protagonist, an older man, who has nicknamed her "Lolita". Synonymous in most (Japanese) contexts with pedophilia, but some may argue that in reference to <a href="#hentai">hentai</a>, lolicon refers only to fictional drawn sexual material and therefore is lacking the corruption or abuse of real children.
    <a name="loose-socks">ルーズソックス</a> loose socks
    ("rūzu sokkusu")    		 This refers to the infamous loose socks worn exclusively by Japanese schoolgirls starting in the 1990s. The socks themselves originated from American manufacturers, who were aiming at the mountain climbing industry, but the market for young high school girls became viable after they were adopted as an "alternate school uniform". It is not usual for other age groups to wear them—they seem to be exclusive to high school.     <a name="lotion">ローション</a> lotion
    ("rōshon")    		 From "love lotion" (ラブローション "rabu rōshon"). A generic term for sexual lubricant, especially the water-based kind. Nakajima Chemicals Company's Pepee (ペペ [sic]) is a popular brand of lotion, recognizable by its elongated clear bottle with a domed (orange) top. Given the fantasy nature of <a href="#hentai">hentai</a> anime and <a href="#seinen">seinen</a> manga, lubricant is seldom used, but in real life may be part of <a href="#paizuri">paizuri</a>.     <a name="lotion-play">ローションプレイ</a> lotion play
    ("rōshon purē")    		 The use of <a href="#lotion">lotion</a> (sexual lubricant), often in large quantities (such as playing in a bathtub full of it with your partner). A service offered in some <a href="#soapland">soaplands</a> and depicted in specialized <a href="#AV">AVs</a>. <a href="#kemeko-zuri">Kemeko zuri</a> is one type of lotion play.
    <a name="love-hotel">ラブホテル</a> love hotel
    ("rabu hoteru")    		 A long running institution in Japan, these are gaudily decorated short-stay hotels (and quiet seedy looking ones too) for couples who want a place for sex. Starting as a way for amorous newlyweds to get away from their parents in their paper thin walled bedrooms, love hotels have spiraled into a family business whose customers are anyone from young couples looking for a roll in the sack, to girls just picked up and <a href="#karaoke-box">karaoked</a> out by <a href="#nanpa">nanpa</a> masters, to <a href="#baishun">prostitutes</a> needing somewhere to service a customer, to yakuza looking for somewhere to close a shady deal. Available for different prices for "rest" and "stay", where rest is usually 90 minutes to two hours and "stay" is a night, love hotels are designed for privacy, and often have outrageous decor, inside and out. Rooms decorated with a harem, disco, or science fiction theme, or as a <a href="#chikankōi">train car</a>, BDSM dungeon, or just about anything else are available if you look long enough. Services range widely, too, from the normal fare where 2000–3000 yen just gets you a room and TV, to upscale love hotels that offer <a href="#cosplay">costume</a> rental, room service, <a href="#seigu">sex toy</a> vending machines (in the fridge, amusingly), <a href="#shibari">bondage</a> gear, DVD porn rental, and much else besides. In Tokyo they are mainly centred in Kabukicho, Shinjuku; Dogenzaka, Shibuya; and Higashi, Ikebukuro.     ("rōraizu")    		 As in low cut panties (ローライズパンツ "rōraizu <a href="#pantsu">pantsu</a>" / ローライズパン "rōraizu pan") and <a href="#mizugi">swimsuit</a> bikini bottoms, where the waistband fits below the hips and the back exposes the delectable butt cleavage (rugage)—the current fashion. Also—incorrectly—called "low leg" (ローレグ "roregu"; thus ローレグパンツ "rōregu pantsu" / ローレグパン "rōregu pan"). Considered cute and <a href="#moe">moe</a>, in anime and manga low-rise panties can be depicted as having such a short distance (rise) between waist and crotch that it's a miracle that they stay in place, or cover anything at all. Not incompatible with also being <a href="#shimapan">shimapan</a>. The opposite is "high leg" (ハイレグ "hairegu"), short for "high leg cut" (ハイレグカット "hai regu katto")—panties, swimsuits, <a href="#bunny-girl">bunny-girls</a>' corsets, etc. with French-cut leg lines (resulting in a V-shaped crotch piece)—the previous fashion, which is associated with sexy, non-moe types (such as <a href="#jukujo">jukujo</a>). The extreme of this is "super high leg" (スーパーハイレグ "sūpā hairegu"), short for "super high leg cut" (スーパーハイレグカット "sūpā hairegu katto"), in which the leg holes are cut so high and wide as to make the front crotch piece form a long, narrow strip.     <a name="maebari">マエバリ / まえばり</a> maebari "Crotch piece; groin covering". From 前 ("mae"—"front"/"privates; private parts") and 張り ("bari"—"attached or stretched on"). Developed by Nikkatsu for their Roman porno films, this was originally a sort of feminine codpiece made of skin-colored tape, used to conceal the actress' <a href="#inmō">pubic hair</a>, <a href="#manko">genitals</a>, and <a href="#ketsu-no-ana">anus</a> as a crude sort of <a href="#ken'etsu">censorship</a>. It was replaced by <a href="#bokashi">fogging</a> and <a href="#mosaic">pixelization</a>, as well as presumably being made less necessary by the relaxing in 1991 of Article 175 of the Penal/Criminal Code (<a href="#Kei-Hō">Kei Hō Dai 175 Jō</a>) to allow <a href="#hair-nude">hair nudes</a>. Maebari now refers to any similar strapless crotch piece, and is somewhat of a fetish item in drawn images; the real-life equivalent is a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thong_(clothing)#C-string">C-string</a>.     <a name="maid-cafe">メイドカフェ</a> maid cafe
    ("meido kafe")    		 Also known as "maid kissa" (メイド喫茶 "meido kissa"); from "maid" + "kissaten" (喫茶店 "coffee shop"); the most famous type of <a href="#cosplay">cosplay</a> restaurant (コスプレ系飲食店 "kosupure kei'inshokuten")—you can see maids all over the streets in Akihabara handing out flyers advertising them. There are many different types—the original "get served by girls in maid costumes" is the most common but there are kunochi (female ninja) cafes, <a href="#nekomimi">catgirl</a> cafes, schoolgirl cafes, cosplay cafes, and even schools-for-maids cafes (I'm not sure what the costumes are there). The fare is pretty much the same—pay slightly inflated prices and get your name of choice (yours) written in ketchup on some omuraisu ("omelette rice"—rice omelette with ketchup), then pay some money to let them take a picture of you and your favourite cat-eared ninja maid schoolgirl. The female-oriented equivalent is the butler cafe (執事喫茶 "shitsuji kissa"). A favorite haunt of Japanese otaku. See also <a href="#seifuku-fechi">seifuku fechi</a>.
    <a name="mangurigaeshi">まんぐり返し</a> mangurigaeshi After "dengurigaeshi" (でんぐり返, "somersault"), substituting "<a href="manko">man</a>" (まん, "pussy"). A sexual position in which a woman lays down, facing up, and her partner takes both her legs from the feet and lifts them up, thus lifting the woman's groin up to her partner's head. In this state, the partner can finger her, perform <a href="#anaru-zeme">analingus</a> or cunnilingus, engage in <a href="#ainame">sixty-nine</a>, and so on. It can also involve humiliation as part of <a href="#M">domination/submission</a>. The same for males is <a href="#chingurigaeshi">chingurigaeshi</a>.
    <a name="manko">マンコ / 真婿</a> manko "Pussy; cunt"—the most popular word slang for "vagina". The "worst" word in the Japanese language. Otherwise variously known as "omanko" (おまんこ; slightly softer), "omeko" (おめこ (commonly) / お女子 (rarely); Osaka dialect; rougher than "omanko"), "meko" (メコ; even rougher), "bagina" / "wagina" / "vagina" / "wagina" (バギナ / ワギナ / ヴァギナ / ウァギナ; commonly in <a href="#AV">AVs</a>), and sometimes "hako" (箱, etc.; "box"—see <a href="#okama">okama</a>). A much more polite word for genitalia—both male and female—is "asoko" (あそこ (from 彼処) "over there"), while the formal terms are "chitsu" (膣 / 腟) and "joseiki" (女性器; "female genitalia").     <a name="mansion-health">マンションヘルス</a> mansion health
    ("mansshon herusu")    		 Abbreviated "manheru" (マンヘル); from "mansion" (マンション "condominium") + "<a href="#health">health</a>". A sex club in an apartment building.
    <a name="manzuri">万擦り / 万摺り / 万釣り</a> manzuri Lit. "ten thousand rubs". Female <a href="#onani">masturbation</a>, otherwise known as "suichi o ireru" (スイッチを入れる "flicking the switch"). See <a href="#senzuri">senzuri</a> for the male variety.
    <a name="meganekko">めがねっ子</a> meganekko "Glasses girl", from "megane" (眼鏡 "spectacles; glasses") + "ko" (子 "girl; child"). A rather specific genre in Japanese erotica (and anime and manga generally) in which girls wearing glasses are seen to be more attractive. Whether this is due to the glasses making them seem vulnerable and innocent or the reminding of high school days would probably vary from person to person. Nevertheless, meganekko are stereotypically bookish and shy and tend to play submissive roles (in <a href="http://docwatson42.livejournal.com/705.html">Clements' and McCarthy's theory</a>, a Maiden).     <a name="mekakushi-pure">目隠しプレ</a> mekakushi pure "Blindfold play". Any sexual act involving one of the participants being blindfolded (usually the submissive in S/M play). They say that being deprived of one of your senses heightens the other four. In that logic, adding nose plugs, earplugs, and a ball gag would leave a person in heightened sexual ecstasy comparable to Nirvana. If only life was that simple…
    <a name="mekosuji">メコスジ</a> mekosuji "Camel toe". Female genitals visible through tight clothing. From "meko" (メコ "pussy, vagina"—see <a href="#manko">manko</a>) and "suji" (筋 "line; stripe; streak"). Also known as "mansuji" (マンスジ). A type of chirarizumu—see <a href="#panchira">panchira</a>.
    <a name="mibojin">未亡人</a> mibojin "Widow". Generally refers to a woman widowed in middle age by a freak disease or car accident, leaving an apprently very lonely and sexually frustrated woman in need of some special attention. Also ties in with <a href="#jukujo">jukujo</a>.
    <a name="mimi-fechi">耳フェチ</a> mimi fechi "Ear <a href="#fechi">fetish</a>". Fetish centering around women's ears. Like <a href="#ha-daisuki">ha daisuki</a> I have absolutely no idea why this would be in the least bit sexy, but then again, for every part of girls, there are men who find them extremely erotic. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a "philtrum fetish" in some back alley forum on the Internet somewhere (and after checking, I found it—see <a href="#hananoshita-fechi">hananoshita fechi</a>).
    <a name="mind-control">マインドコントロール</a> mind control
    ("maindo kontorōru")    		 In <a href="#hentai">hentai</a> anime and <a href="#seinen">seinen</a> manga, the result of magic, supernatural possession, drug, <a href="#saiminjutsu">hypnosis</a> or other means, mind control allows various shenanigans which would otherwise be non-consensual. Compare with <a href="#chōkyō">chōkyō</a>, <a href="#biyaku">biyaku</a>, and <a href="#super-touch">super touch</a>.
    <a name="mizu-shōbai">水商売 / みずしょうばい</a> mizu shōbai Lit. "water trade". The night-time entertainment business in Japan, including the <a href="#fūzoku">fūzoku</a> (sex industry), but also more legitimate establishments, especially those concerned with alcohol: bars of all sorts, geisha, <a href="#host-club">host</a> and <a href="#hostess-club">hostess clubs</a>, kissaten (cafes), <a href="#kyaba-kura">kyaba kura</a>, restaurants, and so on.
    <a name="mizugi">水着</a> mizugi "Swimsuit". Not exactly a fetish, since swimsuit competitions and magazine spreads are ten a penny in Japan. Includes all the usual Western styles—one-pieces, bikinis, and impossibly revealing criss-cross string contraptions into which <a href="#gravure-idol">gravure idols</a> with <a href="#bakunyū">bakunyū</a> are strapped. The most famous swimsuit type of all is the girls' "old style" school swimsuit (スクミズ "sukumizu", from スクール水着 "sukūru mizugi", "school swimsuit")—a blue one-piece suit with the wearer's name emblazoned on the front in large letters on a white label, and a (concealed) hole in the front of the suit between the top and crotch piece (apparently for hydrodynamic reasons—see <a href="http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%82%B9%E3%82%AF%E3%83%BC%E3%83%AB%E6%B0%B4%E7%9D%80">Japanese Wikipedia</a> or chapters 14–15 of U-Jin's manga Gakuen Heaven for an explanation). Presumably also put there by the manfacturers for easy erotic access, though in real life this would probably result in <a href="#lolicon">lolicon</a> and a subsequent prosecution.     <a name="moe">萌え / もえ</a> moe Lit. "budding, sprouting" (in reference to plants), possibly from "moeru" (萌える "to bud, to sprout"), and a pun on "moeru" (燃える "to burn", literally and as with passion), though the etymology is unknown and very much disputed. It originally meant a feeling of "of affection and almost parental protectiveness over characters who were innocent, cute, and just on the verge of maturing of childhood", and has progressed to mean variety of things (in approximate chronological order):
    • a "burning passion for something"
    • a synonym for "cuteness"
    • a "sexually sublimated fascination with cuteness"
    • a character with moe traits—one who is an "adorable, whimsical, clumsy, early-adolescent", an "amalgam of <a href="#lolicon">lolicon</a> and bishōjo [pretty girl]"

    As may be guessed from the above, moe is much disputed and a difficult thing to pin down. A moe character is, in <a href="http://docwatson42.livejournal.com/705.html">Clements' and McCarthy's theory</a>, a Child, Girl Next Door, or shy Maiden; the Older Woman (see <a href="#jukujo">jukujo</a>) is the opposite of moe.

    For further explanation (I recommend reading them in order of appearance):

    (I include this entry in a dictionary about hentai because moe definitely qualifies as a fetish, and because moe qualities are now being used in Japanese drawn pornography (<a href="#eroge">eroge</a>, etc.).)
    <a name="monzetsu">悶絶</a> monzetsu "Fainting in agony". A minority fetish (separate from <a href="#guro">guro</a>) which focusses on painful sex. Specifically in most cases, the sex is "so painful it's good" in that roundabout, semi-<a href="#emu">masochistic</a> denial fashion that the Japanese have done so well. In <a href="#seinen">seinen</a> manga, usually involves men with impossibly large manhoods (see <a href="#kyochin">kyochin / kyotama</a>) and girls having sex so hard the girls throw up or pass out. Usually contains amusing phrases such as "You're hitting my womb!" (see <a href="#shikyū">shikyū</a>) and "You're going to tear my ovaries off!"—skirting the line between <a href="#hentai">hentai</a> and comedy. Mozetsu often results in <a href="#ahegao">ahegao</a>.
    <a name="mosaic">モザイク</a> mosaic
    ("mozaiku")    		 "Pixelization". A method of <a href="#ken'etsu">censorship</a> which displays part or all of the offending bits at a markedly lower resolution, resulting in large(r) pixels. "Dejimo" (デジモ, from "digital mosaic") is a relatively new type of mosaic, featuring much smaller pixels than the normal mosaic. Compare with <a href="#bokashi">bokashi</a>.
    <a name="munyū">無乳</a> munyū Lit. "negative breasts; lacking breasts". Absolutely flat chested; a girl with tiny <a href="#oppai">breasts</a>. Synonymous with <a href="#petanko">petanko</a>, and smaller than <a href="#binyū">binyū</a>; see also <a href="#tsurupeta">tsurupeta</a>.

    <a name="N">N</a>

    <a name="nakadashi">中出し</a> nakadashi Lit. "exit inside". To ejaculate inside your partner (either in the <a href="#manko">vagina</a> or <a href="#ketsu-no-ana">rectum</a>). Also can be used as a verb—"nakadashimasu" (中出します) = "I'm coming inside". Equivalent to the Western term "creampie". In animated/drawn material it is often elaborated by a cross-sectional/X-ray camera shot or subsequent <a href="#ninpu">pregnancy</a>.
    <a name="nama">生</a> nama "Raw". In this context used to indicate that a <a href="#gomu">condom</a> is not used. For example—"nama fera" (生フェラ, <a href="#ferachio">fellatio</a> without condom); "nama <a href="#etchi">etchi</a>" (生エッチ, sex without a condom). As opposed to "gomu fera" (blowjob with a condom).
    <a name="nanpa">ナンパ / 軟派</a> nanpa "Girl hunting". Commonly known as flirting in the West, but possibly in a more serious sporting sense, this is the "art" of picking up girls. As with all things that the Japanese have or take from other cultures, there has evolved a complex system, complete with teachers, rules, and "secret techniques". Generally, though, it consists of men standing on street corners and picking up women, sometimes for dates and sex, and other times for more long-term relationships. The converse in which women approach men is called "gyaku nanpa" (逆ナンパ "reverse nanpa"; abbreviated 逆ナン "gyakunan"). Compare with <a href="#gōkon">gōkon</a>.
    <a name="nanpa-tōsatsu">軟派盗撮</a> nanpa tōsatsu "Secret flirt film". <a href="#nanpa">Nanpa</a> <a href="#sesshishō">tōsatsu</a> refers to a man who secretly films the course of picking up a girl in a bar through to taking her to a <a href="#love-hotel">love hotel</a> room and having sex with her. Illegal of course, but if done as an act then marketable (see <a href="#AV">AV</a>). Compare with <a href="#hamedori">hamedori</a>, a non-secret type of sex film.
    <a name="neko">猫 / ネコ / ねこ</a> neko Lit. "cat" (猫 only). From a play on "o-nee", from "o-nee-san" ("older sister"), by dropping the honorific "o" and adding "ko" (子 "child"). Feminine <a href="#rezubian">lesbian</a> or <a href="#gay">gay</a> man; the submissive, bottom, passive, or femme role in a homosexual relationship, as opposed to <a href="#tachi">tachi</a> or <a href="#seme">seme</a>. Compare with the gender neutral <a href="#reversible">reversible</a>.
    <a name="nekomimi">猫耳</a> nekomimi "Cat ears". The most popular type of <a href="#kemonomimi">kemonomimi</a>, a special kind of <a href="#cosplay">cosplay</a> in which the girl wears animal ears and sometimes a tail and responds with sentences ending in the animal's appropriate noise—in this case "~nya" (にゃあ; equivalent to the English "meow"). <a href="http://cartoonresearch.com/index.php/cat-girls/">Catgirls</a> (猫娘 "nekomusume") have been popularized in anime culture since early days, so it makes sense that the nekomimi stereotype is rife in both drawn <a href="#hentai">hentai</a> and live action porn, as well as <a href="#image-club">image clubs</a>.
    <a name="netorari">寝取られ</a> netorari (NTR) "Having your lover taken from you", being cheated upon. The converse is "netori" (寝取り "taking a lover away from someone", cheating upon), and the verb is "netoru" (寝取る "to steal a lover"); all are abbreviated "NTR". As a genre, the point of NTR is "to play with the 'jealous feelings' of the player[/viewer/reader]".     <a name="newhalf">ニューハーフ</a> newhalf
    ("nyūhāfu")    		 Another word for a pre-op transsexual (see also <a href="#shemale">shemale</a>). Generally refers to a man who has had <a href="#oppai">breast</a> augmentation but who still has male genitalia. "Newhalf" may also refer to an individual who is physiologically of one gender but whose <a href="#seidōitsusei">identity</a> and personality is of the other. They may also <a href="#josō">cross-dress</a>. Compare with <a href="#onabe">onabe</a>.
    <a name="niana-dōji">二穴同時</a> niana dōji Lit. "two-hole simultaneous"; double penetration. Synonyms: DP ("dī pī"), "niketsu sōnyū" (二穴挿入 lit. "two-hole insertion"), and "sandoitchi fakku" (サンドイッチ・ファック "sandwich fuck"). Triple penetration is "sanketsu dōji" (三穴同時 lit. "three-hole simultaneous") and "sanana sōnyū" (三穴挿入 "three-hole insertion"); both are abbreviated "sanketsu"/"san'ana"/"miana" (all: 三穴). Double penetration, while it happens often in <a href="#hentai">hentai</a>, does not seem to be a major Japanese <a href="#fechi">fetish</a> per se, since it does not appear in lists of keyword searches for DMM (one of Japan's largest online porn retailers), MGS (Media Global Stage, another Japanese-language porn retailer), DLsite (Japanese-otaku <a href="#dōjinshi">dōjin</a> CG central), Getchu.com (a major <a href="#eroge">eroge</a> and bishōjo anime specialist retailer), or in the dictionaries to which I have access.     <a name="nijikon">にじこん</a> nijikon A portmanteau of "nijigen konpurekkusu" (二次元コンプレックス "two-dimensional complex"). The feeling or opinion that two-dimensional (i.e. anime, manga, or game) characters are more attractive (visually, physically (including sexually), or emotionally) than real-life people. Also known as "2D <a href="#fechi">fetish</a>" in English.
    <a name="niku-benki">肉便器</a> niku benki Lit. "meat urinal/toilet"; "human toilet". A woman for use as a dumping ground for males' semen. See the synonymous <a href="#kōshū-benjo">kōshū benjo</a>, and the related <a href="#shintai-ni-rakugaki">shintai ni rakugaki</a> and <a href="#yariman">yariman</a>.
    <a name="nikutai-kaizō">肉体改造</a> nikutai kaizō "Body remodeling". Refers to a range of <a href="#kikai">bizarre</a> fetishes involving the modification of bodies to a certain end through (usually) science or surgery. Can involve <a href="#ryōki">limb amputations</a> (for example, <a href="#suitcase-girl">suitcase girls</a>), addition of extra <a href="#oppai">breasts</a>/genitalia, removal of same, addition of appendages, heads and other even more bizarre things impossible to mention without cringing. The turning of girls into everyday objects such as tables apparently originates from Shozo Numa's 1956 novel Kachikujin Yapū (家畜人ヤプー, Yapoo the Human Cattle, AKA The Domestic Yapoo).
    <a name="ninpu">妊婦</a> ninpu "Pregnant woman". A related term is "haramase" (孕ませ "to make conceive, impregnate"). Any <a href="#hentai">hentai</a> containing pregnant women. Also exists in niche Western pornography. Presumably the basis is that women can be extremely sexually disinhibited at times when pregnant, and also in some circles the pregnant woman is seen as the height of womanliness and therefore extremely desirable. Probably a bit of both to be honest.
    <a name="nipple fuck">ニップルファック</a> nipple fuck
    ("nippuru fakku")    		 Refers either to actual milk duct penetration by the <a href="#chinpo">penis</a> or the act in which there is no actual penetration, but pleasure is achieved since the girl's breasts are very large (<a href="#bakunyū">bakunyū</a> or <a href="#chōnyū">chōnyū</a>) and so the breast involutes around the penis. Often linked with <a href="#bonyū">lactation</a>; a completely fictional <a href="#fechi">fetish</a> (impossible in real life).
    <a name="no-pan-kissa">ノーパン喫茶</a> no-pan kissa "No panties cafe" (from the English "no" and the Japanese "<a href="#pantsu">pantsu</a>" ("panties") and "kissaten" (喫茶店 "coffee shop"). A kind of cafe popular from 1978 to the early 1980s in which the waitresses wore short skirts and no panties and the floor was mirrored for…well, you can probably <a href="#panchira">guess</a>. Generally no sexual contact was allowed with the girls, though coffee prices were sky high (up to ¥700 a cup—about US$10 in 2012 dollars). Later on, rooms were put in out back for pricier interactions such as <a href="#tekoki">masturbation</a> or <a href="#ferachio">blowjobs</a>. There are hardly any left now. No-pan yakuniku and no-pan shabu shabu restaurants also exist, amusingly. Part of the <a href="#fūzoku">sex industry</a>. See also <a href="#seifuku-fechi">seifuku fechi</a>.
    <a name="nūdoru">ヌードル</a> nūdoru From "nude" and "idol" (the Japanese term referring to a famous person—especially a young girl—in the media); someone who is the subject of "nude gravure" (ヌードグラビア "nude photos", from "nude" + "rotogravure"—see <a href="#gravure-idol">gravure idol</a>). Similar to gravure idols, nūdoru pose for softcore pornography such as is published in risqué glossy magazines and <a href="#shashinshū">photobooks</a>, but do not go so far as to make <a href="#AV">AVs</a>.
    <a name="nure-fechi">濡れフェチ / ぬれフェチ</a> nure fechi "Wet <a href="#fechi">fetish</a>". This refers to an <a href="#AV">AV</a> fetish in which athletic girls are filmed doing various things wet—e.g. <a href="#zenra">swimming naked</a>, being hosed down, taking baths, etc. Everyone knows that water and sex in real life generally results in slipping over and back sprains… Anyway, this is an example of what <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Joy_of_Sex">The Joy of Sex</a> calls "<a href="http://books.google.com/books?id=3KVA2_arcLsC&q=superskin">superskin</a>"—the smoothing out and simplification of body lines ("tightness, shininess and texture"); see its "Clothes" and "Wet look" entries. Formerly (incorrectly) listed here as "meri fechi" ("めりフェチ"), and not to be confused with <a href="#nuri-fechi">nuri fechi</a>. (Thanks to kijakusai for his help with this.)
    <a name="nuri-fechi">塗りフェチ</a> nuri fechi "Painting <a href="#fechi">fetish</a>". Material in which a nude girl is painted in bright colors all over her body—presumably the painting itself is mildly erotic and the finished work is artful and contemporary (dependent on the skill of the artists of course). Now all that's left is to label it Untitled Woman (Painted) and leave it in the Tate Modern. Not to be confused with <a href="#nure-fechi">nure fechi</a>.
    <a name="nyotaimori">女体盛り</a> nyotaimori "Female body presentation". The act of presenting food on a girl's naked body to be eaten off. The food is usually sashimi or sushi (thus the English term "naked sushi"). The girl must be trained rigorously to lie still without moving and may be given a cold bath beforehand to reduce skin temperature. In certain establishments, she may be tied up using <a href="#kinbaku">kinbaku</a>. The use of male models, the term for which is "nantaimori" (男体盛り), is significantly less popular. Compare with <a href="#wakamezake">wakamezake</a>.
    <a name="nyōdō-sōnyū">尿道挿入 / 尿道ファック</a> nyōdō sōnyū / nyōdō fakku "Urethral penetration"/"urethral fuck". Another rare <a href="#fechi">fetish</a> involving the penetration of the (usually male) urethra with a variety of implements—including anal beads, <a href="#harikata">dildos</a>, <a href="#baibu">vibrators</a>, and other <a href="#chinpo">penes</a>. A popular theme in <a href="#futanari">futanari</a> as this allows the theme of urethral penetration to be explored without <a href="#gay">gay</a> overtones. Most of the feats of penetration demonstrated in <a href="#hentai">hentai</a> are biologically impossible (without a strict training regimen, of course).
    <a name="nyūkan">乳間</a> nyūkan Lit. "<a href="#oppai">breast</a> interval/between". Cleavage. I [Yuribou] am absolutely puzzled by why the Japanese are so obsessed with breasts. Having systematically bred them out of their women for hundreds of years, now with a whiff of American media all the men are baying for the <a href="#kyonyū">big ones</a>. If that's not conclusive evidence for the genetically coded innate desire for men to get suffocated by <a href="#bakunyū">enormous hooters</a> then I don't know what is. <a href="#tanima">Tanima</a> is the more common term.     <a name="O">O</a>

    <a name="ōbānī">オーバーニー</a> ōbānī Lit. "over knee", from "ōbānī sokkusu" (オーバーニーソックス). "Knee socks"—stockings that cover the knee. Stereotypically worn by maids (see <a href="#seifuku-fechi">seifuku fechi</a>) and others performing <a href="#cosplay">cosplay</a>, and the subject of <a href="#fechi">fetishization</a> by otaku. The space between the top of the stocking and the hem of a short skirt is the <a href="#zettai-ryōiki">zettai ryōiki</a>.
    <a name="okama">御釜</a> okama "Faggot; fag". Derogatory. Refers to all <a href="#gay">gay</a> men, as well as to effeminate men and male <a href="#josō">transvestites</a>. The word actually means "iron pot/kettle" or colloquially, "<a href="#shiri">buttocks</a>"—the usage of words for "pot" is a common metaphor in Japanese for sexual slang terms, especially for the <a href="#ketsu-no-ana">anus</a> and <a href="#manko">vagina</a>, but also by extension for gay men. See <a href="#yaoi">yaoi</a>.
    <a name="omorashi">お漏らし</a> omorashi "Peeing". Specifically refers to the discomfort of having a full bladder. "Omorashi <a href="#fechi">fechi</a>" is the attraction to girls/men who are hobbling around with a full bladder being deprived of a toilet, or gaining pleasure from being the one with the full bladder. "Omorashi purei" (お漏らしプレイ "omorashi play") is a service offered in <a href="#soapland">soaplands</a>, similar to <a href="#aka-chan-purē">aka-chan purē</a>, in which the customer wears a diaper in which they <a href="#hōnyō">urinate</a>, which the girl then deals with as if she was his mother.
    <a name="onabe">お鍋 / 御鍋 / おなべ</a> onabe Lit. "cooking pot, saucepan", punning on "<a href="#okama">okama</a>". Also just "nabe" (鍋), without the honorific "o-". A generally derogatory term for a masculine lesbian (similar to the English terms "dyke" and "butch"), or a female-to-male <a href="#josō">crossdresser</a> or transsexual (compare with <a href="#shemale">shemale</a> and <a href="#newhalf">newhalf</a>).
    <a name="onahole">オナホール</a> onahole
    ("onahōru")    		 "Artificial <a href="#manko">vagina</a>; pocket pussy" (though artificial <a href="#ketsu-no-ana">anuses/rectums</a>, artificial breasts (for <a href="#paizuri">paizuri</a>), and artificial mouths are also available)—a <a href="#seigu">sex toy</a> sleeve for male <a href="#senzuri">masturbation</a>. "Onahole" is from "<a href="#onani">onanī / onani</a>" and the English "hole". They come in a startling variety, often (allegedly) patterned after the organs of <a href="#AV">AV</a> idols or anime characters, whether from hentai or not, and are designed for use with <a href="#lotion">lotion</a>. The disposable, one-use version is called an "onacup" (オナカップ "onakappu").
    <a name="onani">オナニー / オナニ</a> onanī / onani "Onanism; masturbation" (of both male and female variety), from the German "Onanie". Also known as "masutābēshon" (マスターベーション / マスターベイション), which is also abbreviated to "masu" (マス); "jī" (自慰 "self consolation"); "hitori <a href="#etchi">etchi</a>" (一人エッチ "sex on your own" (lit. "one person indecent")); and "hitorigokko" (? "self-play"). See <a href="#senzuri">senzuri</a> and <a href="#manzuri">manzuri</a>, respectively, for the male and female varieties.
    <a name="onara">屁 / おなら</a> onara "Farting". Fetish involving girls, microphones, baked beans, and several very embarrassing sounds. May or may not involve the famous Dutch oven (see the <a href="http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=dutch+oven">Urban Dictionary entry</a>). Lighting of said flatus optional.
    <a name="oppai">おっぱい</a> oppai "Breast"; also children's language for "breast milk" (see <a href="#bonyū">bonyū</a>). Also known as "mune" (胸 "chest"), "boin" (ボイン / ぼいん "breast"; "large breast"; the noise for bouncing breasts), and "chichi" (乳 "breast", not to be confused with "<a href="#chinpo">chinchin</a>"—"penis"). Refers to the female love pillows part of the anatomy, useful for cushioning falls, clearing space on trains, and a refreshing drink on a cold day. Now also rendered "paiotsu" (ぱいおつ; the inverse of "oppai") as a trendy alternative. In (approximate) order of size: <a href="#chōnyū">chōnyū</a> > <a href="#bakunyū">bakunyū</a> > <a href="#kyonyū">kyonyū</a> > <a href="#futsū">futsū</a> > <a href="#hinnyū">hinnyū</a> > (<a href="#binyū">binyū</a> / <a href="#chippai">chippai</a>) > (<a href="#munyū">munyū</a> / <a href="#petanko">petanko</a> / <a href="#pechapai">pechapai</a>); see also <a href="#tanima">tanima / taniai</a> (cleavage).     <a name="orgasm">オーガズム</a> orgasm
    ("ōgazumu")    		 From the English. Also "Orgasmus" (オルガスムス "orugasumusu", often shortened to "orugasumu" (オルガスム)) from the German—both are the technical terms in Japanese, which does not have a native clinical term, though "seiteki zetchō" (性的絶頂 "sexual climax") is used. The most popular verb for orgasm is "iku" (逝く "to go"), which also can mean "to ejaculate". The verbs "dasu" (出す "to send") and "deru" (出る "(1) to go out; to exit; to leave; (2) to appear; to come forth; to be published") are also used. See <a href="#shiofuki">shiofuki</a> and <a href="#zamen">zamen</a>.
    <a name="osawari-pub">お触パブ</a> osawari pub
    ("osawari pabu")    		 "Touching pub". AKA "osawari kyaba kura" (お触りキャバクラ "touching <a href="#kyaba-kura">kyaba kura</a>"), "<a href="#oppai">oppai</a> pubu" (おっぱいパブ "breast pub"), "hassuru pabu" (ハッスルパブ "hustle pub"), and "oppai momi momi" (オッパイモミモミ lit. "breast" + onomatopoeia for the feeling of groping a breast). A type of kyaba kura in which the customers pay to fondle the bare breasts of the hostesses, who are often in <a href="#cosplay">cosplay</a>. Unlike <a href="#pink-salon">pink salons</a>, however, <a href="#onani">masturbation</a> is not a service that is offered.
    <a name="own-goal">オウンゴウル</a> own goal
    ("oun gouru")    		 To ejaculate on one's own face. Often done as a submissive act—i.e. being tied up in a shoulderstand position with the legs over the head so that by virtue of gravity, the dominant can watch the amusement of a man ejaculating on his own face. Also done with <a href="#futanari">futanari</a>. Compare with <a href="#bukkake">bukkake</a> and <a href="#gansha">gansha</a>.
    <a name="oyako-donburi">親子丼</a> oyako donburi Lit. "parent-and-child bowl", from oyakodon, the chicken, egg, and rice dish. A male having sexual relations with a mother and daughter. See also <a href="#kinshinsōkan">kinshinsōkan</a>.

    <a name="paipan">白板 / パイパン</a> paipan "Shaved pubic area; person with little or no <a href="#inmō">pubic hair</a>"; from the blank (white) mahjong tile. "Tsurutsuru no <a href="#manko">manko</a>" (ツルツルのマンコ, AKA "tsuruman" (ツルマン)) and "tsurutsuru no <a href="#chinpo">chinchin</a>" (ツルツルのチンチン, AKA "tsuruchin" (ツルチン)) are respectively used for the female and male varieties. The opposite, a hairy female crotch, is called "mojaman" (もじゃマン), from "mojamoja" (もじゃもじゃ "shaggy (hair)") and "manko".     <a name="paizuri">パイズリ</a> paizuri "Mammary intercourse; tit fuck". Comes from the "pai" of "<a href="#oppai">oppai</a>" (breasts) and "zuri" (onomatopoeia for a rubbing sound). Refers to a girl with large breasts stimulating a penis by rubbing it between them—in her <a href="#tanima">cleavage</a>. If a <a href="#shemale">shemale</a> or <a href="#futanari">futanari</a> has a large enough penis and breasts, then she/he can do it to him/herself (autopaizuri). In real life paizuri may involve the use of <a href="#lotion">lotion</a> or <a href="#tsuba-shanpū">tsuba shanpū</a>.
    <a name="panchira">パンチラ</a> panchira "Panty flash". A contraction of "pantī ga chirari to mamieru" (パンティーがチラりと見える "to see a fleeting glimpse of <a href="#pantsu">panties</a>"). The most well-known form of "chirarizumu" (チラリズム: "chiramise" (チラ見せ "giving someone a peek (of cleavage, etc.)") + "ism"), of which there are over dozen categorized types (most of the terms end in "chira"), including also <a href="#mekosuji">mekosuji</a> (camel toe). Panchira is a mainstay of anime fan service, but popular in real Japanese culture from the 1960s when the miniskirt became popular. Either involves actresses pulling up skirts for the camera or amateur cameramen running around streets flipping skirts or filming under stairs ("<a href="#sesshishō">tōsatsu</a>") and such.     <a name="pantsu">パンツ</a> pantsu "Panties"; also "pantī" (パンティー), and abbreviated "pan" (パン) in compounds, such as <a href="#shimapan">shimapan</a>. The focus of several fetishes, including <a href="#kuikomi">kuikomi</a>, <a href="#low-rise">low-rise</a>, <a href="#panchira">panchira</a> (from which <a href="#no-pan-kissa">no-pan kissa</a>), <a href="#pantsu-to-kao">pantsu to kao</a>, <a href="#shitagi-mania">shitagi mania</a>, and <a href="#yogoreta-shitagi">yogoreta shitagi</a>. In addition to the humiliation element, the thrill could also come from the smell of <a href="#yogoreta-shitagi">unwashed gusset</a> and the mild asphyxiation caused by having too-tight panties blocking nose and mouth.     <a name="pechapai">ぺちゃぱい / ぺチャパイ</a> pechapai "Small <a href="#oppai">breasts</a>; flat-chested". Smaller than <a href="#binyū">binyū</a> and <a href="#chippai">chippai</a>, and synonymous with <a href="#munyū">munyū</a> and the much more popular term <a href="#petanko">petanko</a>.     <a name="penisu-bando">ペニスバンド / ペニバン</a> penisu bando / peniban "Strap-on dildo" from "penis" and "band"; also the harness used with such a <a href="#harikata">dildo</a>. Refers to <a href="#seigu">devices</a> used by <a href="#rezubian">lesbians</a> to penetrate other girls, usually attached to the hips by a harness, but can also be attached to the forehead or mouth (usually in <a href="#kinbaku">bondage</a> play where the submissive cannot move her hips).
    <a name="petanko">ぺたんこ / ぺったんこ / ペッタンコ / ぺちゃんこ / ぺしゃんこ / ぺっちゃんこ</a> petanko / pettanko / pettanko / pechanko / peshanko / petchanko "Flat-chested girl", from "crushed flat; flattened; squashed; flat-topped" (derived from "petan" (ぺたん) "sound of something making firm contact with a flat surface", from "peta peta" (ぺたぺた), of the same meaning). A girl with tiny <a href="#oppai">breasts</a>. "Petanko" and "pettanko" (both versions) are the most common, both in Japanese and English-language sources. Synonymous with <a href="#munyū">munyū</a> and <a href="#pechapai">pechapai</a>, while <a href="#binyū">binyū</a> and <a href="#chippai">chippai</a> are larger; see also <a href="#tsurupeta">tsurupeta</a>.
    <a name="pink">ピンク</a> pink
    ("pinku")    		 In Japanese, the color associated with sex. Supposedly originated from a review of the 1962 film Flesh Market, in reference to the amount of exposed female skin; thus "pink eiga" (ピンク映画 "adult/porn film", as opposed to <a href="#AV">AV</a>). Subsequent uses of "pink" include <a href="#pink-salon">pink salon</a>, and "pink bira"/"pink chirashi" (ピンクビラ / ピンクチラシ leaflet/sticker advertising sex services. "Bira" (片/枚) is from the English "bill", and the katakana "chirashi" was originally "散らし").
    <a name="pink-salon">ピンクサロン</a> pink salon
    ("pinku saron")    		 Also known as "pinsaro" (ピンサロ). Low end <a href="#fūzoku">brothels</a> specializing in cheap prices and <a href="#ferachio">oral sex</a>. The services are performed in restaurant booth–like "box seats"; the hostesses may be in <a href="#cosplay">cosplay</a>, though given the usual dim lighting in these establishments this can't be appreciated much. Apparently demanding places to work (building character, I would say!) but can act as stepping stones to higher paying jobs in <a href="#fashion-health">fashion healths</a> and <a href="#soapland">soaplands</a>.
    <a name="potchari">ぽっちゃり</a> potchari Similar to <a href="#debusen">debusen</a>, refers to the fetish for larger women, though the exact meaning may differ—can refer to chubby (i.e. not anorexic) women, large women with large breasts (<a href="#kyonyū">kyonyū</a> or <a href="#bakunyū">bakunyū</a>), fat women, or women who are clinically obese.     ("ribāshiburu")    		 Also shortened to "riba" (リバ). Someone who can switch from dominant to submissive or active to passive roles. Known as a "switch" in English dom/sub slang. Compare with <a href="#joō-sama">joō-sama</a>, and the homosexual <a href="#neko">neko</a>, <a href="#seme">seme</a>, <a href="#tachi">tachi</a>, and <a href="#uke">uke</a>.
    <a name="rezubian">レスビアン</a> rezubian "Lesbian" (directly from the English). Also contracted as "rezu" (レズ), though this has a negative connotation, similar to "dyke" or "lez"; "bian" (アン) is used by Japanese lesbians. Another word for material involving two women having sex or the subjects of said material. "Riri zoku" (リリ族 "lily tribe"—see <a href="#yuri">yuri</a>) refers to the quality of being a lesbian.     <a name="rinkan">輪姦</a> rinkan Lit. "gang <a href="#gōkan">rape</a>"—"gang bang". Sex (not necessarily non-consensual) involving multiple partners in which men change sexual partners during the course of the act. Classic to Western pornography, scenes can involve <a href="#niana-dōji">double or triple penetration</a> and various other things only possible with more than one. Remember, two's company, three's a crowd, but four is when you start to make the money. Compare with <a href="#3P">3P / 4P</a>.
    <a name="roshutsushō">露出症</a> roshutsushō "Exhibitionism". Also "roshutsukyō" (露出狂). "Roshutsu" (露出 lit. "exposure"—"public nudity (genre of pornography)") is a related term. A popular genre of Japanese pornography. <a href="#yagai">Yagai</a> (sex outside) is related, though it doesn't always involve actual exhibitionism per se.
    <a name="rotor">ローター</a> rotor
    ("rōtā")    		 "Bullet vibrator; capsule-type vibrator". Also: "<a href="#pink">pink</a> rotor" (ピンクローター "pinku rōtā"). A very common type of <a href="#baibu">vibrator</a> in anime, manga, and <a href="#eroge">eroge</a>. See <a href="#seigu">seigu</a>.
    <a name="ryōki">猟奇</a> ryōki "Mutilation". Defacing of a body using knives and other sharp objects—directly related to <a href="#guro">guro</a> and can also be part of <a href="#nikutai-kaizō">body remodeling</a>.     <a name="saiminjutsu">催眠術 / 催眠</a> saiminjutsu / saimin "Hypnosis". In the case of <a href="#hentai">hentai</a> anime and <a href="#seinen">seinen</a> manga, a type of <a href="#mind-control">mind control</a>, effected by magic or science, that Paul McKenna may or may not use on his fangirls/boys on Saturday nights. Usually used in place of an <a href="#biyaku">aphrodisiac</a> to get women to sleep with an otherwise luckless loser (and the rest of the school's faculty).
    <a name="sanran">産卵</a> sanran "Egg laying; spawning" (a normal, non-slang term). A purely <a href="#dōjinshi">dōjinshi</a> and <a href="#hentai">hentai</a> fetish involving usually first the impregnation of the victim girl by a monster or alien of some variety, then a brief incubation period before she lays the monster's offspring (generally as eggs). Fairly <a href="#kikai">bizarre</a> and not entirely dissociated with pregnancy (see <a href="#ninpu">ninpu</a>).
    <a name="seidōitsusei">性同一性</a> seidōitsusei "Gender identity", from "sei" (性: "nature, character"; "sex, gender") and "dōitsu" (同一: "identity, sameness")—the formal, technical term. "Seidōitsusei shōgai" (性同一性障害) is "gender identity disorder".
    <a name="seifuku-fechi">制服フェチ</a> seifuku fechi

    "Uniform <a href="#fechi">fetish</a>"; also, "kosuchūmu fechi" (コスチュームフェチ "costume fetish"). A clothing fetish where an individual is obsessed and fixated with another or themself wearing a uniform (as in <a href="#cosplay">cosplay</a>). A synonym for <a href="#hentai">hentai</a> (pornographic) men's manga; also "<a href="#ero">ero</a> manga" (エロマンガ / エロ漫画), "<a href="#18-kin">18-kin</a> manga" (18禁漫画 "18 restricted manga"), "<a href="#seijin">seijin</a>", and "adult comics" (アダルトコミック "adaruto komikku"). Warning labels (in the form of <a href="http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n236/doc-watson42/logo.gif">yellow ovals with black lettering</a>) bearing the words "seinen komikku" (成年コミック) were added to hentai manga in January 1991, after the much-publicized stir caused by a housewife who found erotic material being sold within easy reach of 14-year-olds. The term "seinen manga" (成人漫画) is also used, but is not to be confused with "seinen" (青年 "youth, young man") manga aimed at 18- to 30-year-old men.     <a name="seiteki-shikō">性的指向</a> seiteki shikō "Sexual orientation", from "sexual, sexually" (性的: "nature, character"; "sex, gender") and "shikō" (指向: "being oriented towards")—the formal, technical term.
    <a name="seme">攻め</a> seme Lit. "attack". Refers to the dominant male in a <a href="#gay">gay</a> (<a href="#yaoi">yaoi</a>) relationship. Opposite of <a href="#uke">uke</a> and <a href="#neko">neko</a>. Usually indistinguishable in appearance since most yaoi is depicted as "pretty boy" or "bishōnen", but in real life usually refers to the masculine rather than effeminate man. Compare with <a href="#tachi">tachi</a>, the <a href="#seiteki-shikō">orientation</a>-neutral <a href="#reversible">reversible</a>, and the feminine <a href="#joō-sama">joō-sama</a>. If you've ever heard of the term "spot the submarine", you'll know what this is talking about. In this <a href="#soapland">soapland</a> practice, the girl takes a bath with her customer who flexes up at the hips so she can bend over and fellate him. Gotta make sure there's no soap though—tastes disgusting…
    <a name="senzuri">千擦り</a> senzuri Lit. "thousand strokes". Male <a href="#onani">masturbation</a>. Also known as "shiko shiko" (シコシコ)—onomatopoeia for the Western equivalent of "fap fap". See also <a href="#manzuri">manzuri</a> for the female variety.
    <a name="sesshishō">窃視症</a> sesshishō "Voyeurism". A very popular genre. Related terms include "tōsatsu" (盗撮 "peeping photos; taking peeping films"), those videos or still pictures taken from a low angle in which the girl is wearing a skirt are called "appusukāto" (アップスカート; from the English "<a href="#panchira">upskirt</a> photography"), and someone who takes such photos/videos is called a "nozokima" (覗き魔 / 覗魔 "peeping tom").     <a name="sex-friend">セックスフレンド</a> sex friend
    ("sekkusu furendo")    		 "Fuck buddy". Someone with whom a person has physical, but not a romantic relationship. Also abbreviated "SF", "esu efu" (エスエフ), and "sefure" (セフレ).
    <a name="shashinshū">写真集</a> shashinshū "Photobook", a type of art book (画集 "gashū"). Japan produces a large number of photobooks on all subjects, including of course those of cheesecake and softcore pornography, featuring <a href="#gravure-idol">gravure idols</a>, <a href="#nūdoru">nūdoru</a>, and <a href="#AV">AV</a> idols. Two of the most famous shashinshū are Kanako Higuchi's Water Fruit and (particularly) Rie Miyazawa's best-selling Santa Fe, published in June and November 1991, respectively, which featured the first legal <a href="#hair-nude">hair nudes</a>.
    <a name="shemale">シーメール</a> shemale
    ("shīmēru")    		 Similar in meaning to <a href="#newhalf">newhalf</a>. Refers to either a male possessing distinct female personality and physiological characteristics, or a pre-op transsexual male who has received <a href="#oppai">breast</a> augmentation but still retains male genitalia. Comes directly from the Western term. Compare with <a href="#futanari">futanari</a> and <a href="#onabe">onabe</a>.
    <a name="shibari">縛り</a> shibari "To tie". Refers to any act of tying or binding with string or rope and has only recently passed into use for meaning the specific Japanese style of bondage in which the recipient is bound with intricate patterns of interweaving hemp or jute ropes restricting movement and promoting pain or pleasure. See also <a href="#kinbaku">kinbaku</a>. Interestingly, though Western bondage favors knots, traditional kinbaku has no knots at all, and modern versions make do with only simple knot types. See <a href="#kikkō shibari">kikkō shibari</a> and <a href="#shinju">shinju</a> for specific types of bondage.
    <a name="shikan">屍姦 / 死姦</a> shikan "Necrophilia"; also "shikan mania" (死姦マニア). Lust for dead bodies. Can be associated with <a href="#guro">guro</a>. Technically, necrophilia refers to sexual acts done on bodies already dead, rather than the killing of same. I have no idea why this would be attractive but then again, I can't empathise with the guro people either. I suppose "not wanting to let go of a loved one" plus a little sprinkle of madness might explain it, or perhaps having complete control over someone's body.
    <a name="shikyū">子宮</a> shikyū "Womb; uterus". Other words are "botai" (母胎), "hatake" (畑 "womb; birth; birthplace" (colloquial)), "tai"/"hara" (胎), and "kobukuro" (子袋). A rather clinical word you might think, but it has rather taken off of late in <a href="#seinen">seinen</a> manga. As the artist Shiina Kazuki wrote, "It's only in manga where bodies can be like rubber and girls can shoot fire or electricity just using their hands. So I drew some wombs getting fucked." I think that pretty much encapsulates the fetish in a nutshell. Usually has female characters exclaiming in the middle of <a href="#honban">intercourse</a> that their partner's <a href="#chinpo">penis</a> is "hitting their womb" and depicts large amounts of <a href="#zāmen">semen</a> being ejaculated directly into their uterus, as if the girl doesn't have cervix. The more extreme versions have the penis actually penetrating the cervix and into the womb itself (which results in other such ill-conceived lines as "If you cum directly into my womb you'll definitely get me pregnant!" or "You're cumming in my womb so hard you're drowning my ovaries!"). This is apparently the height of pleasure, but I wouldn't try it at home. See also <a href="#inkaku">inkaku</a> and <a href="#manko">manko</a>.
    <a name="shimapan">縞ぱん / 縞パン / しまぱん</a> shimapan "Striped panties". From "shima" (縞 "stripe") + "pan" (from "<a href="#pantsu">panties</a>"). For many otaku the favorite type of feminine underwear. The stripes are always horizontal, and the background color is white, with blue (especially), pink, or green as the contrasting hue. <a href="http://www.peterpayne.net/2013/09/the-history-of-shimapan-ahoge-and.html">According to Peter Payne</a>, proprietor of retailer J-List, shimapan were popularized by the anime Stellvia of the Universe. They are rarely seen outside of anime and manga, and in real life are mostly to be purchased at adult and cosplay stores. And they're usually made of that extremely unsexy cotton towelling stuff. Believe me, I [Yuribou] have looked. See <a href="#seifuku-fechi">seifuku fechi</a>.
    <a name="shinju">真珠</a> shinju Lit. "pearl"—"<a href="#oppai">breast</a> bondage". Referring to <a href="#kinbaku">kinbaku</a>-type Japanese bondage applied to the breasts in which ropes entwine under the arms and back, and around the breasts in such a manner that they are squeezed in a stimulating way when the victim struggles. Also, it looks neat. As said before, it is rare for knots to be used in this kind of bondage. Shinju may be part of a larger <a href="#kikkō shibari">kikkō shibari</a> harness.
    <a name="shintai-ni-rakugaki">身体に落書き / 身体に落書</a> shintai ni rakugaki "Graffiti on the body". Also "karada ni rakugaki" (体に落書き "graffiti on the body"). Fetish fairly commonly seen in domination/submissive play in which the dominant writes characters on the submissive's body in order to inflict shame and embarrassment to heighten the submissive role. Commonly types are "hitai ni niku" (額に肉 "'niku' on the forehead"), in which the derogatory word "niku" (肉 "meat") is written on the forehead, and "sei no ji" (正の字 "tally mark" (colloquial)), in which "sei" (<a href="http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E6%AD%A3">正</a>) is inscribed in part or in whole on the thighs or buttocks to indicate the number of "customers" served so far. (The formal term for tally mark is "kakusenhō" (画線法). In Japanese, the character "sei" ("correct"; "proper"; "honesty") is used for tallies; five strokes are used to write it, so when completed it represents the number "five". When written (incompletely) with fewer strokes, it represents the number of strokes that have been written. E.g., twelve = 正正丅.)     N.B.: In previous versions of the Hentai Dictionary, お書字 (allegedly "oshouji" ("oshōji")—"calligraphy character", but actually "oshoji"—"o-" (honorific prefix) + shoji ("written form")) was given as the term for this fetish, but I could only find it in English language sources (including a magazine article), and it does not actually seem to be used in Japanese.     <a name="shiofuki">潮吹き</a> shiofuki Lit. "geyser/whale spouting". Female ejaculation—another great euphemism where the Western terms are lewd and crude and the Japanese term is…fairly obscure to those not in the know. If "shiofuki" is expected, it is customary for the customer to shout "Thar she blows!" as it occurs. Actually, that is a lie. See <a href="#orgasm">orgasm</a>.
    <a name="shiri">尻</a> shiri "Bottom"; also the slightly softer "oshiri" (お尻). Referring to the part commonly known as the "ass" in American pornography. "Denbu" (臀部) is the proper term; other synonyms include "ketsu" (尻 / ケツ; slightly rougher than "shiri"), "oshiro" (? "behind"), and "hippu" ("ヒップ" "hips; buttocks; backside"). For "anus", see <a href="#ketsu-no-ana">ketsu no ana</a>.
    <a name="shitagi-mania">したぎまニャ</a> shitagi mania "Panty mania". Obsession with <a href="#pantsu">panties</a>. Not the dirty kind—the normal kind (as opposed to <a href="#yogoreta-shitagi">yogoreta shitagi</a>). Otaku often have a shitagi mania for <a href="#low-rise">low-rise</a> panties and/or <a href="#shimapan">shimapan</a>. A type of <a href="#seifuku-fechi">seifuku fechi</a>.
    <a name="shokushu">触手</a> shokushu "Tentacles". Tentacles are a specific kind of <a href="#kikai">bizarre</a> fetish specifically embodied in the landmark <a href="#hentai">hentai</a> Urotsukidōji (manga: c. 1986 (possibly serialized earlier); anime: 1987) as a method of getting around the strict Japanese <a href="#ken'etsu">censorship</a> laws, in which showing a woman getting penetrated by a penis was BAD but getting <a href="#gōkan">raped</a> by an octopus or mechanical appendage was A-OK. (The first appearance of phallic tentacles in anime was in 1984, in the OAVs Obyoki Aki-chan and The Satisfaction.) However, they did exist in Japanese erotic art and literature long before then—specifically in the 1820 <a href="#shunga">woodblock print</a> Dreams of a Fisherman's Wife which involved a woman, two octopuses and… well, you can imagine the rest. So tentacle porn is well entrenched in Japanese culture and the progression to hentai seems to be more natural rather than revolutionary. Aficionados of the genre cite that the eroticism comes from the image of a girl being pleasured in many ways at the same time—otherwise impossible in real life due to steric hindrance.
    <a name="shōben">小便</a> shōben Lit. "little convenience"—"urine". Other terms include the technical term "nyō" (尿 "urine"; also pronounced "shito" by women), "shonben" (しょべん "piss"—masculine speech), and the euphemism "seisui" (精水 "spirit/holy water"). See <a href="#hōnyō">hōnyō</a>.
    <a name="shotacon">ショタコン</a> shotacon The opposite of <a href="#lolicon">lolicon</a>, "shotacon" is a contraction of "Shōtarō complex" (正太郎コンプレックス "Shōtarō konpurekkusu") of which "Shōtarō" is a character taken from the old manga/anime series Tetsujin 28-go (Gigantor). In this series Shōtarō is a young boy who nevertheless displays adult personality traits and works in the world of adults. "Shotacon" itself refers to people who prefer young boys (otherwise known as "Grecian love"). There are several types of shotacon, perhaps most commonly involving <a href="#jukujo">middle aged women</a> and young boys (including <a href="#kinshinsōkan">incest</a>), or older men and young boys (more reminiscent of ancient Greek culture—see <a href="#shudō">shudō</a>). It can also be used to refer to relationships depicted between underage girls and boys. Themes can involve <a href="#josō">cross-dressing</a>.
    <a name="shudō">衆道</a> shudō Abbreviation for "wakashudō" (若衆道 "way of adolescent boys"). The age-related structure of <a href="#gay">homosexuality</a> in the samurai period. Shūdo means "way of the young" and the system itself was similar to the oft-quoted mentoring systems of old in which older men befriended and sponsored younger boys who became their lovers as well as almost their sons (otherwise known as pederasty—see <a href="#shotacon">shotacon</a>). The Japanese samurai had a similar tradition and it was strange for a man to say that he wasn't with a young man in this way rather than vice versa. It also had a great following in the literature and the arts, with hundreds of titles published on the subject as well as some very saucy <a href="#shunga">woodblock prints</a> for the <a href="#onani">masturbatory</a> pleasure of the ancestors of today's <a href="#yaoi">yaoi</a> <a href="#fujoshi">fangirls</a>.
    <a name="shunga">春画</a> shunga Erotic wood block prints (ukiyo-e (浮世絵)—basically, if you've seen classical Japanese art like the waves crashing or Mount Fuji, it's ukiyo-e). Similar to the fashion in Europe in the early days of printing, when saucy French lithographs circulated amongst the gentry for <a href="#onani">masturbatory</a> purposes (though these days their content would be considered quite mild), in Japan there were similar affairs with their particular traditional art. Presumably, this also included <a href="#shudō">shudō</a>-related depictions. One might say this was the beginnings of the fanbase for <a href="#yaoi">yaoi</a> <a href="#fujoshi">fangirls</a>…
    <a name="soapland">ソープランド</a> soapland
    ("sopurando")    		 In any other country known as a brothel, soaplands exist at the very heights of the Japanese <a href="#fūzoku">fūzoku</a>—a "sōpu-jō" (soapland girl) is what all little <a href="#baishun">prostitutes</a> want to be when they grow up. Soaplands are specifically brothels offering girls to wash a man for a fee as well as several other services revolving around sexual gratification (such as <a href="#senbōkyō">senbōkyō</a>, but officially not including <a href="#honban">coitus</a>, though soaplands are known for it), sometimes including <a href="#cosplay">cosplay</a>. This is again to work around the loophole-filled Japanese Anti-Prostitution Law which specifically prohibits the exchange of money for sexual intercourse. Darn bureaucrats and their clean minds! Soaplands were originally called toruko-buro (トルコ風呂 / トルコぶろ "Turkish bath"), until 1984 when a Turkish scholar began a campaign against the term. The new name "soapland" was the winning entry in a nationwide contest to rename them.
    <a name="spats">スパッツ</a> spats
    ("supattsu")    		 "Gaiters; leggings; tights; spats", from "spandex tights". Also: "supattsu taitsu" (スパッツタイツ "spats tights"). Any tight fitting leggings, but especially (black) bicycle shorts, which are used for gym shorts, as an alternative to <a href="#burusera">bloomers</a>. In an ero-context, don't wear any <a href="#pantsu">panties</a> underneath for that silky smooth feel both for yourself and for your P.E. teacher when he shafts you in the gym storage room afterwards. Another "<a href="#nuri-fechi">superskin</a>" <a href="#fechi">fetish</a>, part of the attraction is the possibility of <a href="#mekosuji">camel toe</a>.     <a name="suitcase-girl">? [unknown]</a> suitcase girl I don't have a Japanese term for this, though one artist described it as "hakozume shishi setsudan shōjo" (箱詰め四肢切断少女 "a boxed girl whose limbs were cut off"). An infamous type of <a href="#guro">guro</a> that involves a girl being <a href="#ryōki">mutilated</a> (generally by quadruple amputation, among other things), and then put into a suitcase. As far as I know this is only a type of fan art, though manga of it might exist. (Thanks to kijakusai for his help with this.)
    <a name="sumata">素股</a> sumata "Intercrural sex" or "femoral intercourse". A service at <a href="#soapland">soaplands</a>, and occasionally seen in <a href="#hentai">hentai</a> as well—the intercrura refers to the space between the thighs when the legs are held together (the <a href="#zettai-kūiki">zettai kūiki</a> in otaku parlance)—i.e. holding the girl's legs together while the <a href="#chinpo">penis</a> is moved between them, and possibly against the <a href="#manko">vulva</a>. A kind of "thigh wank" if you will. Popular amongst customers and <a href="#baishun">prostitutes</a> who shy away from <a href="#honban">actual penetrative sex</a>. After all, if it's not in, you're not cheating…
    <a name="suminuri">墨塗り</a> suminuri Lit. "ink coating". "Censor bar"—a form of <a href="#ken'etsu">censorship</a> in which "sensitive" information or images are occluded by a black, grey, or white rectangular box. This is one of the methods used on <a href="#seinen">seinen</a> manga, though often the bar is so small as to block essentially nothing. It is also occasionally used on anime, though usually for comic effect. Other methods used are <a href="#bokashi">bokashi</a> and <a href="#mosaic">mosaic</a>.
    <a name="super-touch">? [unknown]</a> super touch Also "ultimate seduction". My terms for the skill possessed by characters who can seduce virtually anyone with just their touch, or at the least (eventually) obtain consent for sex through their amatory skill, even if the sex starts out as <a href="#gōkan">rape</a>. I don't know if there is a Japanese term for this. Most often found in the <a href="#chikankōi">chikankōi</a> genre. Compare with <a href="#biyaku">biyaku</a>, <a href="#mind-control">mind control</a>, and <a href="#saiminjutsu">saiminjutsu</a>.
    <a name="suppon">スッポン</a> suppon <a href="#manko">Vaginal</a> spasm. You can imagine this onomatopoeia. Girl: "Ah, ah! <a href="#orgasm">Iku</a>!!!" SUPPON.

    <a name="tachi">タチ / たち</a> tachi The dominant or butch role in a <a href="#rezubian">lesbian</a> or <a href="#gay">gay</a> relationship, as opposed to <a href="#neko">neko</a>. From "tachiyaku" (立役), the kabuki term for young adult male roles. See also <a href="#yuri">yuri</a>, and compare with <a href="#seme">seme</a>, <a href="#joō-sama">joō-sama</a>, and <a href="#reversible">reversible</a>.
    <a name="tamakeri">玉蹴り</a> tamakeri "<a href="#kintama">Ball</a> kick". Either the <a href="#emu">masochistic</a> act of gaining sexual satisfaction from having a beautiful lady kick you in the testicles or the <a href="#esu">sadistic</a> act of gaining sexual pleasure from watching beautiful girls kick other poor men's testicles. Presumably, there is an element of <a href="#panchira">panty flashing</a> involved, but I would say that this nestles safely within the S/M category of fetishes.
    <a name="tamaname">玉嘗め</a> tamaname "<a href="#kintama">Ball</a> lick". To lick the balls. See <a href="#ainame">ainame</a> (sixty-nine).
    <a name="tanima">谷間 / 谷あい</a> tanima / taniai "Cleavage". "Tanima" is the common term and literally means "valley interval/between". Also called "<a href="#nyūkan">nyūkan</a>". See <a href="#oppai">oppai</a> (breast) and <a href="#paizuri">paizuri</a> (tit fuck).
    <a name="teimō">剃毛</a> teimō "Shaving (pubic) hair". In <a href="#soapland">soaplands</a>, this refers either to having the customer's <a href="#inmō">pubic hair</a> shaved or the customer shaving the <a href="#baishun">prostitute</a>'s pubic hair (called "teimō play" (剃毛プレイ "teimō purē"), resulting in a <a href="#paipan">paipan</a>). I wouldn't say that this was an S/M act—if anything, it would be more towards dom/sub since it involves a rather large modicum of trust.
    <a name="tekoki">手コキ</a> tekoki "Handjob". Exactly what it says on the package—to <a href="#onani">masturbate</a> a man with the hands. "Shuin" (手淫) is the polite, proper term. As opposed to <a href="#ashikoki">ashikoki</a> which is "footjob".
    <a name="terekura">テレクラ</a> terekura A contraction of "telephone club". Similar to the Western "dating hotlines" advertized in the glossies and late at night on Channel 5 and American cable television, in which you call up and talk to an ugly girl with a sweet voice for two minutes and get charged $75. However, the (current) Japanese version has the customers paying to sit in a cubicle watching porn while waiting for a girl to call. These are often fronts for the aforementioned <a href="#enjo-kōsai">enjo kōsai</a>, as methods for older balding businessmen with busy lives and wives who don't put out to meet horny young schoolgirls with a penchant for earning pocket money.
    <a name="tsuba-shanpū">唾シャンプウ</a> tsuba shanpū "Spit shampoo". Another truth-in-advertising kind of <a href="#fechi">fetish</a>—although rather than the traditional girl sitting while men spit on her in a degrading, <a href="#bukkake">bukkake</a>-esque scene, this refers to a fetish in which the man is held down and spat on by girls and women. Obviously, this preys on secret fantasies of submission and has several advantages over bukakke—the most obvious of which is that it tastes somewhat better and it doesn't take multiple latherings and rinses to get out in the shower afterwards. A milder form involves the woman drooling on the man's penis in order to lubricate it for <a href="#paizuri">paizuri</a> (instead of using <a href="#lotion">lotion</a>).
    <a name="tsubo-arai">壺洗い</a> tsubo arai Lit. "pot washing" (see <a href="#okama">okama</a>). I.e. washing the <a href="#manko">vagina</a> of your girl with soap and fingers. Part of the whole "sex in the bath" kind of fetish. The fact that the Japanese seem to spend most of their bathtimes out of the bath seems to lend itself to immoral goings-on anyway…
    <a name="tsurupeta">つるぺた / ツルペタ</a> tsurupeta "Flat chested, hairless girl". From the onomatopoeia "tsurutsuru" (つるつる "smooth, polished; slick; slippery; sleek", especially "hairless" (see <a href="#inmō">inmō</a>)) and "petan" (ぺたん "flat", "devoid of bumps and holes").     <a name="ushiro-takatokote">後ろ高手小手</a> ushiro takatokote Lit. "behind high small hands"—"boxtie". The basic form of <a href="#kinbaku">kinbaku</a> in which the hands are bound behind the back so that the hands touch the elbow of the opposite arm.

    ("bācharu dēto")    		 A bit like the virtual pornography videos common in the U.S., in a virtual date, a video is <a href="#hamedori">shot from the viewpoint of the client</a>, who goes on a date with the girl of choice, probably ending up in a bedroom or hotel of some variety. Not entirely unlike an <a href="#eroge">eroge</a>. Probably the most famous virtual date (gone wrong) is Video Girl Ai (which is only <a href="#etchi">etchi</a>).

    <a name="waisetsu">猥褻 / いんこう</a> waisetsu "Obscenity"—the good stuff. That which Article 175 of the Penal/Criminal Code (<a href="#Kei-Hō">Kei Hō Dai 175 Jō</a>) and Article 69, Paragraph 11 of the Customs Law/Customs Duties Law (<a href="#Kanzei-Hō">Kanzei Hō Dai 69 Jō no 11</a>) target for <a href="#ken'etsu">censorship</a>.
    <a name="wakamezake">わかめ酒</a> wakamezake "Seaweed sake". The act of drinking sake from the depressions in a woman's body; the "seaweed" is her <a href="#inmō">pubic hair</a>. One would envisage the appropriate points would be the depression of a sucked-in stomach, from between <a href="#oppai">breasts</a> squeezed together, and from the <a href="#zettai kūiki">crotch with the thighs pressed together</a>. Advocates of this would probably say that the sake takes on the womanly flavor and becomes a delicacy, but basically, it is a variation of the <a href="#nyotaimori">eating-food-off-women fetish</a> but with less presentation and more tongues.
    <a name="wakige-fechi">腋毛フェチ</a> wakige fechi "Underarm hair <a href="#fechi">fetish</a>". A fetish for unshaven armpits (which has strangely been increasing in popularity recently), something out of which <a href="#AV">AV</a> star Kaoru Kuroki made a career in the 1980s and '90s, using her <a href="#teimō">unshaven</a> hair to ridicule the then-current ban on <a href="#inmō">pubic hair</a> (see also <a href="#hair-nude">hair nude</a>). A related and even more niche fetish is "wakiga fechi" (腋臭フェチ "underarm/body odor fetish"). The attraction seems to be men liking smelly women or strong "female" smells. Or perhaps just another point for the degradation of women. The hair is often used in "wakizuri" (腋毛ズリ(?)), or masturbating the penis with the armpit (and presumably making it nice and smelly in the process and then licking it off afterwards).
    <a name="wobarisuto">ヲバリスト</a> wobarisuto "Rubberist". One who likes to dress in rubber. Intimately associated with the Western BDSM culture, this commonly involves either dominant men or women dressed in tight fitting rubber catsuits or submissives totally encased in rubber with only small holes for breathing (under the dominant's control). You can imagine that there are many ways in which this would stimulate—to name but a few: complete trust submission, sensory deprivation, erotic asphyxiation etc., etc. See <a href="#nuri-fechi">nuri fechi</a> and <a href="#seifuku-fechi">seifuku fechi</a>.

    <a name="yagai">野外</a> yagai "Outside". To perform a sexual act in public. This doesn't have to be sex, but also includes urination ("yagai <a href="#hōnyō">hōnyō</a>"), <a href="#onani">masturbation</a>, and public nudity. In this, the thrill for the man comes from the embarrassment of the girl and the domination of getting her to do unpleasant things or alternatively the <a href="#sesshishō">voyeurism</a> of watching public indecency. For the girl, there is usually a degree of <a href="#roshutsushō">exhibitionism</a> deriving pleasure from embarrassment or a thrill from almost being caught.
    <a name="yaoi">やおい / ヤオイ</a> yaoi Contraction of "yama nashi, ohi nashi, imi nashi" ("ヤマなし、オチなし、意味なし") or "no climax, no punchline, no meaning" (though I would guess that most <a href="#gay">gay</a> people you meet would tell you differently!); refers to sex between men. This can take two main forms—older man seducing younger inexperienced boys (similar to <a href="#shudō">shudō</a>) or two bishōnen (pretty boys) depicted as in a sexual relationship—much to the chagrin of the entire female cast. Yaoi is older and more popular than <a href="#yuri">yuri</a> (the female equivalent, discussed below) and you'll find yaoi <a href="#fujoshi">fangirls</a> in the strangest places. It is primarily written for girls rather than gay men. The equivalent in Western fandom is "slash" which encompasses both gay and <a href="#rezubian">lesbian</a> pairings.     <a name="yariman">やりまん / ヤリマン</a> yariman "Slut"; "a woman who goes after guys for sex". Apparently one of the rudest words in Japan. It's probably short for "doing it" and "10,000"—as in "done it 10,000 times", but I am still lacking in a reference for that—the etymology is apparently obscure due to the term's origin as slang. Compare with <a href="#kōshū-benjo">kōshū benjo</a> and <a href="#niku-benki">niku benki</a>.
    <a name="yobai">夜這い</a> yobai Lit.: "night crawling". To sneak into your girlfriend's bed to have sex. The standard "uniform" is a hand towel or similar cloth worn over the head and tied under the nose.
    <a name="yogoreta-shitagi">汚れた下着</a> yogoreta shitagi "Dirty panty fetish". Men who like used <a href="#pantsu">panties</a>. There is in fact a thriving trade in used panties in Japan, the most famous of which are the "used panty vending machines" in Tokyo, where you can buy panties guaranteed to have been used by Japanese schoolgirls. (<a href="http://www.peterpayne.net/2013/04/some-questions-about-japanese.html">http://www.peterpayne.net/2013/04/some-questions-about-japanese.htmlAccording to Peter Payne</a>, proprietor of retailer J-List, "[t]hese existed, but in very small numbers 10–15 years ago, and anything you hear about today is pure urban legend.") Shady backstreet vendors will also sell these, often with pictures of the girl on the front, so you can see what you're getting (see <a href="#burusera">burusera</a>). In <a href="#soapland">soaplands</a>, service might include a girl taking off her panties for you and you either (paying a fee to) take them away or having her smell them. Needless to say, soiled panties (blood, <a href="#shōben">urine</a>, etc.) are probably worth more. In fact, you can sometimes ask for your attendant's urine to take away when you visit a brothel (known as "tēku auto" (テイクアウト "take out")). Compare with <a href="#shitagi-mania">shitagi mania</a>.
    <a name="yuri">百合</a> yuri "Lily", from "yurizoku" (百合族 "lily tribe"), coined by Itō Bungaku in 1971 in the gay men's magazine <a href="http://intersections.anu.edu.au/issue12/aoki.html">Barazoku</a> (薔薇族 "Rose Tribe"). Referring to <a href="#rezubian">lesbian</a> relationships. Naturally, the opposite of <a href="#yaoi">yaoi</a>. Yuri gets its name from the lily flower, a bloom to which (in Japan) beautiful women are traditionally likened; the equivalent flower for yaoi (and homosexual men) is the rose. Also, it has two syllables, starts and ends with the same sounds and was coined after yaoi. As with yaoi, there are two main storylines—senpai (upperclasswomen) seducing vulnerable young girls in the classes below, and just the plain girls of the same age group falling in love. Yuri has a much smaller fanbase than yaoi and seems to appeal both to girls and men. Catholic schoolgirls and childhood friends (幼馴染 "osananajimi") are common yuri fodder.     <a name="zāmen">ザーメン</a> zāmen "Semen", from the German "Samen". A formal term which has been widely adopted "both colloquially and pornographically", as has "superuma" (スペルマ; from the English "sperm"). Other formal terms include "seishi" (精子 lit. "vitality child") and "seieki" (精液 lit. "vitality liquid"; also means "seminal fluid"). See also <a href="#bukkake">bukkake</a> and the synonymous <a href="#gansha">gansha</a>, and <a href="#gokkun">gokkun</a>, as well as <a href="#orgasm">orgasm</a>.
    <a name="zenra">全裸</a> zenra "Completely nude". Not unusual in pornography, you might say. Zenra refers to material in which girls are seen doing everyday things, such as sports (of all kinds), vacuuming, going to work, talking on the phone etc., but completely nude. Similar in vein to the fetish in which girls are photographed in only one piece of clothing (<a href="#hadaka">hadaka</a>).
    <a name="zentai">ゼンタイ</a> zentai A <a href="#fechi">fetish</a> for skin-tight garments that cover the entire body, including the face. A portmonteau of "zenshin taitsu" (全身タイツ "full-body tights"), a term in Japanese that encompasses unitards and (non-feline) catsuits. Very much a "<a href="#nuri-fechi">superskin</a>" fetish.     <a name="zettai-kūiki">絶対空域</a> zettai kūiki Lit. "absolute airspace". The triangular space between a girl's thighs and crotch. Featured in <a href="#sumata">sumata</a>, the term is spinoff from the more famous <a href="#zettai-ryōiki">zettai ryōiki</a>.
    <a name="zettai-ryōiki">絶対領域</a> zettai ryōiki Meaning "Absolute Territory" (from the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion, where the English translation is "AT [Absolute Terror] field"), this phrase now refers to something completely different and lacking in all types of humanoid biomechanical emo-driven monstrosities. Zettai ryōiki is the area of exposed leg when a girl is wearing a skirt and socks, especially a short skirt and thigh-high stockings; purists discount longer skirts and shorter hosery. The "ideal" skirt:thigh:sock-above-knee ratio is often reported to be 4:1:2.5. Zettai ryōiki is classified by stocking length into approximately six categories (in ascending order—the numbers are merely for illustrative purposes):
    1. low cut socks (スニーカーソックス "sunīkā sokkusu"—"sneaker socks")
    2. ankle-length (アンクレット "ankuretto"—"anklet")
    3. mid-calf-length (ハイソックス "hai sokkusu"—"high socks")
    4. knee highs (ニーハイソックス "nīhai sokkusu"—"knee-high socks"; abbreviated ニーソ "nīso" and ニーソックス "nī sokkusu")
    5. <a href="#ōbānī">over-knee</a> (オーバーニーソックス "ōbānī sokkusu"—"over-the-knee socks")
    6. thigh-highs (サイハイソックス "sai hai sokkusu"—"thigh-high socks")
    (Some systems add or subtract a length category in the vicinity of the ankle.) Anglophone fans use letter grades, where Grade A is the ideal (thigh-highs) and Grade E or F is ankle socks; another grade, Grade S, also exists, consisting of Grade A in combination with twin ponytails ("twin tails").
