editDigital mapping is the visual representation of geographical or spatial information using computer technology. It involves capturing, storing, and displaying spatial data in a digital format. It can then be manipulated and analyzed using software applications like QGIS which is open source[2] .
The history of digital mapping.
editThe history of digital maping can be traced back to the evolution of cartography. [3] In the 17th, 18th,and 19th centuries, every region has had its ways to cart maps and represent them inform of geographical data.[4] [5]
Between 1970s and 80s when GIS became a reality, cartography experienced a shift, because GIS systems came with digital screens for displaying geographical information, replacing the traditional paper cartography.[4] [6]
Eniro is credited for introducing the world to the first digital map in 2003 which covered only three cities but expanded to 33 in 2008, and later to satelite images which came in 2006[7].
