History

edit

Poramadulla Central College was established in 1901.According to its history it was started as a small school in Karadagolla. Then, it became a bi-lingual school and placed where Poramadulla primary school was. As a result of the request made by principal Mr. M.D Gunawardhana and villagers, that school was accepted as a Central College from 1st of February 1946. “Opatha walawwa” (Mahagedara walawwa)was handed over to the principal and it is believed that girls’ hostel is the so called building at percent. Classes were started in that building on 1st march 1946.Mr. P.E.G Mendis was appointed as the next principal on 15th may 1945. The 1st stone was placed by Hon. Mr.D.S.Senanayaka the prime minister of Sri Lanka. Mr.Mendis left the school in august 1945 laying the foundation. Mr. Keerthi W.Dissanayaka was the next principal and he was the person who composed the school anthem “(නංවා කෙහෙළි ලොවේ....)” After that period, the Golden era of the school was marked by Mr. P. Senarath who pioneered the school to be changed its environment. He landscaped the premises to suit for a school and gave a scenic beauty to the environment.

There were lot of changes in that period. Opening ceremony of the main building is recorded on 15th November 1956 at 7.15 a.m. Then he started a Girls’ Hostel in the same building in 1957 and later it was shifted to “Opatha walawwa”. Boys’ hostel was established in the same year. Advanced Level classes were started in 1954 and fortunately the first student who was selected to the university from the Nuwara Eliya District, C.N. Nandisena was from Poramadulla Central College. He was also fortunate enough to be the first student who got through the university entrance. Sports of the school became so popular in that era. Field events, volleyball, wrestling, netball, boxing were some of the sports which students could took part successfully. They could obtain lot of awards in district level, Provincial level and also won all island awards. The cadet core was started in 1957 too. Scouting, Drama and art association, Buddhist society, English literary association and advanced school educational circle were some other associations they had in the school. The first prize giving of the school was held in the same year. In 1955 the primary section of the school was separated as "Poramadulla Kanishta Vidyalaya" remaining the other grades in the central college. It is said that there were 510 students and 25 teachers in the upper school to start with.

In 1959 “Vidueliya magazine” (විදු එළිය) was published and 1960 “Vidura Nadagama” (විදුර නාඩගම)was staged. Science, Commerce and music sections were started in 1961 and the first sports meet was held in the same year. Getting the connection of electricity was also a special incident which happened in 1961. The gymnasium and the open theatre were established in 1962. During that period, everybody could see that drama section was awakening because “Kothmale (කොත්මලේ) and Mahadanamuththa, (මහදැනමුත්තා) Havule dewlowa, (හවුලේ දෙව්ලොව) Ehenam mata kiyanawa”(එහෙනම් මට කියනවා) which were staged in 1962 and in 1967 “Ehema unath mudalithuma” (එහෙම උනත් මුදලිතුමා) won awards.[1]
