World Championships in professional rodeo are about as close to a given as you can get assuming the subject has some press coverage too. You will find that rodeo is covered under WP:NRODEO in Wikipedia. There are 8 events in rodeo, and it's definitely a man's world for the most part. Seven of the eight events at the top level of rodeo are men's events. Women are allotted barrel racing. And they have made the most of it, and their stories need telling. So do their horses. That's right, horses can be notable in their own right as timed-entry horses and the subject of articles too. But that's a tale for another time. Unless you are writing about a women who has a horse who has won the AQHA barrel racing horse of the year. Put that horse in the biography. Yes, you can do that. There's a source for that. See Mary Burger and Mary Walker for how you might write that up.

Halls of Fame edit

ProRodeo Hall of Fame edit

The ProRodeo Hall of Fame is the greatest honor a competitor in professional rodeo can receive. The August 2017 induction ceremony was ProRodeo's 38th annual event, and marked the first time in the event's history that the class of inductees included barrel racers from the Women's Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA). James' horse, Gils Bay Boy, nicknamed Scamper, was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 1996.[1][2] The unprecedented queen of barrel racing, by the way, Charmayne James, was inducted in 2017. Her horse Scamper was inducted in 1996. James has the only Good Article in women's rodeo. There are no Featured Articles (yet).

To date, as of 2018, there have only been 4 barrel racers inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame.

This is the class of 2108, whom were just inducted the first week of August 2018. There were two barrel racers and one horse. In 2017, there were two barrel racers and one horse. That makes for a total of 4 barrel racers. It also makes a total of 3 horses, Scamper in 1996, and one horse in 2017 and 2018.

National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame edit

The National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame is the most active hall of fame for inducting barrel racers. It is also good to note that Women in Red also have a listing for Halls of Fame, and this is one of them. So it's a cross-over category.

There are other halls of fame that have inducted barrel racers. For a good example, see Charmayne James, who has been inducted into the most, around 10.

Rodeo Associations edit

In 1948, the Girl's Rodeo Association (GRA) was created. The GRA was formed by 38 cowgirls in San Angelo, Texas, to promote women in rodeo. In the beginning, the women were performers in the events of roping, bronc riding, and barrel riding. These cowgirls wanted to create opportunities under fair conditions. It started with 74 original members, 60 approved contents, and a total payout of $29,000. In 1981, the GRA became the Women's Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA). The WPRA is the oldest women's association. It is also the only one governed completely by women.[3]

Today, professional barrel racing is still sanctioned at the highest level by the Women's Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA), while other rodeo events are sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboy's Association (PRCA). The barrel racing events, however, mostly take place at PRCA rodeos, alongside events such as bull riding and tie-down roping. All of the championship rodeo events are held together (except steer roping which has its own finals event, the National Finals Steer Roping (NFSR)), annually at the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) held at the Thomas & Mack Center, in Las Vegas, Nevada in December. White it is true that there are women competing in other events besides barrel riding in the WPRA and other associations, as well as unsanctioned rodeos, none are at a level that can be considered notable for an encyclopedia. Thus, this guide will focus solely on barrel riding for women.[4][5]

  • 2017 Barrel Racing Records This is the latest one currently. I will update when the 2018 one comes out. It contains the current records as well as the world champions going back to 1948. It also lists the AQHA Horse of the Year winners back to 1989. Some of the women own their horses. If they own the horse when its wins, definitely include this in their article. The PRCA media guide also lists these horses, but they call it the AQHA/PRCA Horse of the Year, it's the same award. Also, for examples on how to cite the guide, see existing barrel racing articles, such as Mary Burger and Mary Walker in the Bibliography section for the citation. The latest PRCA Media Guide is at the following location on the PRCA web site. Although the barrel racing champions are not listed in this guide (they are listed on the WPRA web site), the Circuit Champions and AQHA/PRCA Horse of the Year awardees are listed there.

Formerly it was called the Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo (DNCFR). The guide will explain what the competition is and who has won it since 1987. If a world champion has won it, it should be documented the year and which circuit.
