Zhai Qiang was a Chinese actor, film director and scholar of Chinese theater and films.

He held a number of prominent positions in the arts, including Deputy Director of the Northeast Film Studio (东北电影制片) located in Changchun, Jilin Province, Chairman of the Guizhou Federation of Literary and Art Circles (贵州省文联), and Director of the Liaoning People's Art Theater (辽宁人民艺术剧院).

The Cultural Revolution began on May 16, 1966 under the direction of Mao Zedong. Zhai Qiang was targeted for persecution, and on June 10, 1966 he according to one source "died unjustly (冤去世/yuān qùshì)," as a result of the mistreatment he received [1].

In 1927, Zhai Qiang began his studies at the private school Tianjin Second Model Primary School (天津第二模范小学). He then entered the Hebei Provincial No. 1 Middle School (河北省立第一中学) in 1932. In 1935 he passed the entrance exam to matriculate into the Shanghai Theater and Film Research Institute (上海戏剧电影研究所), but in 1936 he transferred to Tianjin Huiwen High School(天津汇文中学).

In 1937, the Second Sino-Japanese War broke out, and Japanese military captured control of major Chinese urban centers, including Beijing, Shanghai and Nanjing. The same year, Zhai Qiang relocated to Yan'an in Shaanxi Province, where the headquarters of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) was located. In Yan'an Zhai Qiang began his studies at the Counter-Japanese Military and Political University, comprehensive public university established by the CCP.

1938年3月入延安鲁迅艺术学院戏剧系学习,同年8月调到第二战区民族革命实验剧团任导演。1939年5月调回延安,到八路军留守兵团政治部烽火剧团任戏剧教员。到1945年9月,先后任延安艺术学校戏剧系主任、延安青艺实验剧团团长、联政宣传队创作科副科长、前线工作队长等职。期间,创作过《治病》、《打狗》、《徐海冰除奸》、《王木匠进城》、《裴金章回家》等歌舞剧。导演《秋瑾》、《悭吝人》、《太平天国》、《李秀成之死》(兼饰李秀成)等话剧。此外,编导《无敌红军》、《开辟第二战场》、《七七活报》、《加强团结,准备反攻》等活报剧。1946年7月参加延安电影制片厂,曾担任《边区劳动英雄另的副导演。1947年5月到1949年7月,先后在陇东军区、华北军区和北平军事管制委员会任团政治处副主任、电影队政治协理员、电影处军代表、副处长等职,1949年7月调到东北电影制片厂任导演,同年底与凌子风联合执导《中华女儿》,获第五届卡罗维·发利国际电影节“自由斗争奖”。1953年任东影副厂长。1956年任贵州省文联戏剧部部长、副主席。1964年任辽宁人民艺术剧院导演,导演过《南海长城》、《豹子湾战斗》(与肖汀合作)等话剧。1966年6月含冤去世。
