1999 Seattle WTO protests 1999 40,000 A series of protests and demonstrations during the World Trade Organization Ministerial Conference of 1999 quickly escalated, with the event's opening ceremony ultimately being canceled, a citywide state of emergency declared, and a Washington National Guard mobilization ordered. Mayor Paul Schell imposed a curfew and a 50 block "no protest zone". The event was dramatized in the film Battle in Seattle.
Seattle Mardi Gras riot 2001 5,000 One person was killed, approximately 70 injured, and several others sexually assaulted, after Mardi Gras partying in the city's Pioneer Square neighborhood spiraled out of control with fisticuffs and looting breaking out among revelers. Riot police began clearing the neighborhood at 12:30 a.m. with the operation substantially complete two hours later.
2012 May Day protests Example 2012 300 An early, city-permitted immigration reform protest was followed by a smaller protest march that organized without a parade permit involving approximately 300 persons. Of that contingent, a smaller group of 75 so-called "anarchists" began "attacking banks, stores and a few upscale cars" with additional reports of uncontrolled fires being started. Mayor Mike McGinn invoked emergency powers to authorize police to confiscate weapons in the downtown area.[2]
2013 May Day protests Example 2013 Example Protests in downtown Seattle "turned violent" after police were pelted with "whatever was at hand". Seventeen people were arrested and a number injured.[3]
