Production and recording

edit

Much of the mixtape was written during BTS' Wings Tour. (J-Hope pictured at the April 2017 Jakarta performance.)

Most of the early production of Hope World was done during BTS' Wings Tour while the band was not rehearsing or performing, such as in hotel rooms and during plane rides. J-Hope explained that the production of the mixtape occurred mostly in small increments and he had aimed to release it in 2017 but was unable to do so. During this time, the mixtape went through numerous iterations that delayed its release time, largely due to it undergoing numerous style changes. This resulted in various tracks being removed and later added again, adjusting beats on some songs, and rerecording various rap parts for the mixtape. He also noted that the slow production time came as a result of prioritizing group promotions over his own solo releases.

The sound of going underwater that opens the album was added after the completion of the track "Hope World" so the song could sound as if it was being heard below the ocean's surface. "Hope World" inspired by Jules Verne's novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1870), a childhood favorite of the rapper. J-Hope wrote both the melody and rap, intending for it to be easy to for others to sing along. He also stated "Hope World" was conceptualized with performances in mind. The song was produced by Docskim, who runs BTS' live concert band. The second song on the album, "Piece of Piece, Pt. 2" was produced and lyricized by J-Hope himself and represents "a side of [him] that most people don't know or expect", represented by the title of the song. He stated "piece of peace" should be taken at face value—the statement, and further the song, communicates his desire to be a kind of peace advocating self-love. The song is listed as "part one" as J-Hope wanted to do more with the topic in future musical releases. The the third track "Daydream" was written by Big Hit Entertainment producer Pdogg, while the melody and lyrics were done by J-Hope.

The album artwork when through various iterations and individual editing sessions with J-Hope and the production team. He had aimed for the artwork to be in a pop art style to reflect thematically with the content of the mixtape, and described the final iteration as "cute". The cover itself features various images of items and themes mentioned in Hope World, such as an airplane and "the hole that Alice fell into" mentioned in "Daydream".
