Homework #2
editXiong'er Volcanic Belt
editArticle 1 (A) The North China craton. (B) This page provides a geologic history of the north china craton along with basic information like its current location and size. (C) I would add additional geologic history going further back in time to the supercontinent Columbia. (D)I think a successful part of the written communication is separating the geology and geography information and giving them a heading so the reader can quickly find the information he or she wants. However I think they could have used some subheadings to better organize the information. (E) The Second figure is good because it shows the north china craton on a map of the world which provides information about its size, shape, location, and the surrounding area. The first figure is bad because it is in russian and I don't know what it is saying. They should add a figure showing the three main blocks of the craton because they describe them a lot in the written section.
Article 2 (A) Rift. (B) This Page describes what a rift is where they can be found and how they form. (C) The article is short and I think much more could be said about rifts, for example a section explaining what causes rifts to form could be added. (D) The author successfully divided the article into paragraphs for each concept but I think it would be better if they had their own heading and more information was added to give a better explanation. (E) The first image demonstrating a horst, graben and normal fault is very nice. Some cross section showing a rift first forming and of a fully developed mid ocean ridge would a good improvement.
Article 3 (A) volcanic belt (B) This page what a volcanic belt is how they can form and gives some examples. (C) More examples of how volcanic belts form could be added. (D) The information in the article is good but the first section is unorganized giving random information. (E) The second image could demonstrates what the author is trying to explain however I believe for the average reader some additional explination would be necessary. I think it should be replaced by a more simple easy to understand figure.
Proposal
editI propose to make a wikipedia page on the Xoing'er Volcanic Belt.
Outline
editIntroduction
- What it is
- Where it is
- How big it is
- When it formed
How it may have formed
- Why it is important to know how it formed
- Evidence for a continental arc setting
- Evidence for a Rift setting.
The value this article will bring to the general audience is a general knowledge of what the Xiong'er Volcanic Belt is and its geologic importance. For the Specialist they will get an overview of the evidece supporting the two geologic settings proposed for the formation of the Volcanic Belt.
I plan to structure the article according to the outline given above. I will use headings to divide up the content of the page and make things easier to find. The original figure/figures I plan to create will be of the Xiong'er Volcanic Belt. I want to be able to show where it is in China and where it is on the North China Craton. I believe this figure is important because it will help convey the information in the introduction.
