Born in Dublin in 1974, John Gerrard received a BFA from The Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, Oxford University. He undertook postgraduate studies at The School of The Art Institute of Chicago and Trinity College, Dublin, and in 2002 was awarded a Pépinières Residency at Ars Electronica, Linz.

Recent solo exhibitions include John Gerrard: Sow Farm, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, 2010-11; Oil Stick Work: Art on the Underground Jubilee Line Commission, Canary Wharf Underground Station, London (2010-2011); Directions: John Gerrard at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C. (2009-2010); John Gerrard' at Thomas Dane Gallery, London (2010); John Gerrard: Animated Scene at the 53rd Venice Biennale (2009); Oil Stick Work at Simon Preston Gallery, New York (2009); John Gerrard at Temple Bar Gallery and Studios, Dublin (2008) and John Gerrard: Dark Portraits at the Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin (2006).

John Gerrard lives and works in Dublin, Ireland and Vienna, Austria.
