Walgney Assis Carvalho was murdered in Coronel Fabriciano, Brazil.

On April 14, 2013 Carvalho was shot at least three times in the back while sitting at a popular fishing hole and restaurant in Coronel Fabriciano, Brazil. He was killed a month after his colleague and friend, Rodrigo Neto. Neto worked for the same newspaper company as Carvalho and covered many police corruption stories. The two worked together on many stories. (Conde, 2019) After Neto was shot and killed on March 8th, 2013 Carvalho told many people he knew who killed Neto but would not reveal any details. Alessandro Neves Augusto was convicted and sentenced to 30 years for killing Carvalho and Rodrigo Neto. Augusto revealed that he killed Carvalho because he was worried that he would reveal that he killed Neto. (CPJ, 2019) Convicting Augusto was a huge step in Brazil showing that people will be accountable to the murders of journalist. Since 2011 there has been at least 16 journalists killed due to stories they have released.

Context

Brazil is known to be a dangerous place for reporters. Since 2011 16 journalists have been killed.

Impact
