Personal

edit

Osama was born in Aleppo, Syria. Jumaa's father worked as a school teacher in Syria before the Syrian Civil War. The family moved soon after Jumaa was born in the village of Taqd. The village is located west of Aleppo.[1] Medyan Dairieh, a family friend, was a war journalist and the head of Images Live, and he became a mentor to Jumaa. Already as a young boy, Jumaa showed interest in Dairieh's work and his cameras, and Dairieh began teaching him all about the basic techniques and understandings of photography. Jumaa dream was to study photography and film making at a Turkish University.[2]

Career

edit

Osama Jumaa trained in photography and documentaries with Images Live in Turkey. The head of Images Live, Medyan Dairieh trained Jumaa on how to work during war in Syria.[1] After finishing his training, Jumaa was set to begin full-time work. Jumaa was working for International Photo Media at the same time of his death. International Photo Media is a branch of Images Live.[3][4][5] (Paraphrase:) "Three days before his death, Osama Jumaa was writing about clashes in the Al-Ameria area of Aleppo."[4]

Osama Jumaa was killed on June 5, 2016 in the northern city of Aleppo. Jumaa was travelling to film the rescue of civilians from rubble following an artillery strike.[3] Upon arriving on the sight the ambulance that Jumaa was riding in was struck by Syrian government launched artillery fire.[6] Jumaa had injuries to his head abdomen, leg, and arm.[1][2] The paramedic driving the ambulance, Abdul Aziz Sharha, was attempting to rescue Jumaa when they were both hit by a second artillery fire, losing both their lives.[7] For an unknown reason Jumaa was not wearing his helmet and body armor inside the ambulance even though his training focused greatly on wearing them at all times. Just days before his death Jumaa had reported about al-Castello road. This road was nicknamed "the road of death" due to heavy bombardments.[citation needed]

Context

edit

Syria is one of the world's deadliest countries for journalists. According to RSF's tally, around two hundred journalists and citizen-journalists have been killed since the start of the conflict in March 2011.[8] Syria is ranked 177th out of 180 countries in RSF's World Press Freedom Index in 2016.

Impact

edit

Last year Reporters Without Borders appealed to the UN Security Council to refer war crimes against journalists in Syria and Iraq to the International Criminal Court.[3]

Reactions

edit

"We condemn bombardments by the Syrian regime's army that target civilians, including journalists covering the conflict, and we remind all parties to the conflict that they are required by UN Security Council Resolution 2222 of 2015 and the Geneva Conventions to guarantee journalists' safety," said Alexandra El Khazen, the head of RSF's Middle East desk. [3] [9]

The International Photo Media released a statement saying, "We announce the news with our deepest sorrow Osama was an extremely brave, independent, impartial young journalist with deep integrity and great humanity."[6]
