Clare Baldwin,1984[1] 35 years old, of Wasilla, Alaska is a Special Correspondent in Southeast Asia for Reuters.[2][1] Baldwin is a Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting winner for her work on Reuters’ investigative piece titled Duterte’s War, which covered the Philippines police’s massive killings for Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs.


Personal

Baldwin was born to her parents, Ralph Baldwin and Susan Gunther in Alaska [1][3]. She attended Colony High School (Alaska) in Palmer, Alaska [1][4], where she received a creative writing award in 1999 for her poetic work titled Sophie [5]. While in high school Baldwin was an intern for the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman as a local reporter [1]. Baldwin attended Stanford University where she graduated in 2005 with a major in english and a minor in human biology [6][7].

Career

Baldwin’s career began in Alaska where she reported for the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner and the Peninsula Clarion [1][3]. She began working for Reuters in 2009 [4]. She is currently stationed in Hong Kong continuing to report for Reuters as a special corespondent [1]

Baldwin is best known for her work on the Reuters series titled Duterte’s War that covered the killings of 4,000 civilians during the continuing drug war in the Philippines [2]

Context

Duterte’s War on drugs covertly began while he was mayor of Davao City where he organized a police force [8][9]. The war on drugs began officially in 2016 after Rodrigo Duterte became president. The Reuters team began investigating when there was a unusual number of recorded killings outside of Manila [2][10][11]. Baldwin, Andrew Marshall (Asia journalist) and Manuel Mogato used difficult to obtain law enforcement records, video surveillance, testimony from police officials, leaked documents as well as interviews from witnesses and emergency doctors to prove the brutalities were conducted by the police [12]. The journalists kept working despite receiving death threats [13]. This piece took 18 months to write and two months to edit[14][8]

Impact

Baldwin’s work on the Reuters series alongside her colleagues helped shine light on the killings occurring in the Philippines, which has led to local press being able to cover these stories [15]. These stories have brought attention to an ongoing problem still developing, but more needs to be done to stop these crimes [14].
