editShawn Crahan was born on September 24, 1969. He was born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa, a city described by Crahan, saying "I have nothing bad to say about the place I was born and raised. The morals here are good, the educational system is good, and you don't get a lot of bullshit that you get in other places." He later went on to say that he would "take Des Moines over [New York City and Los Angeles] any time." At age fifteen (in 1984), Crahan found a mask that represented a clown, in wich he later bought. Since, many of the masks Crahan uses in Slipknot represent a clown.
