Composition and origins

"Purity" was inspired by an account posted on an online webpage. The story was found by custom percussionist Shawn Crahan. Crahan would show the story to lead vocalist Corey Taylor, who became influenced by by the story. Crahan related: "when I showed the story to Corey, he was lyrically inspired."

Slipknot custom percussion Shawn Crahan came up with "Purity"'s concept after viewing a webpage. The page contained a story about a Purity Knight, a fictional character who was kidnapped and buried alive. Lead vocalist Corey Taylor wrote the song after Crahanshowed the webpage to him. Crahan said the story "was pretty fascinating and extremely disturbing." The song's writer said "Can you imagine a girl being buried in a box and have all this lecherous bullshit drip down on her from this guy? It just hurts your head."
