Responsible Technology

edit

Definition

edit

Responsible Technology is a subfield of technology. Unlike the mainstream technology field, Responsible Technology (also known as "responsible tech") is human-centered in its practices, and aims to build technologies with social impact as an end goal rather than profit.[1]. Responsible technology practitioners work towards reducing the harms of technology and advocate for human-centered design of technology, privacy by design systems, interdisciplinary collaboration, transparency of artificial intelligence systems, ethical technology, and ethical guidelines such as the UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence.

History

edit

The responsible tech field started as a grass-root movement until it became a school of thought that brought many practitioners to wonder about the question of responsible tech practices regarding users' data privacy and the impacts of technology, particularly surveillance, on society and democracy[2]. Through coalition of several organizations including the Center for Humane Technology and All Tech Is Human, the field established itself thanks to the collective participation of a growing number of members and practitioners in numerous initiatives, such as reports, panels, and networking events[3]
