- Attended San Angelo High School and wrote for the Evening Standard while still enrolled for a summer, where he got his shortened "Bart" name after he was confused for his father [Hobart K. - Attended San Angelo College, was elected Best All Around Boy in his freshman class, served as sophomore vice president and editor of the Ram-Page. He completed his junior year at the University of Missouri School of Journalism before going into the Navy for World War II. Separated as a Lt. (j.g.)? in 1946, he got an A.B.? from the University of California as a political science major, then returned to Missouri for graduate work. While there in 1948, he was given the Walter Williams Award during Journalism Week by the Missouri Writers Guild. While in college, McDowell also worked as a radio announcer. McDowell also served as associate editor of the Town Journal and The Rotarian (before South America) and associate editor of the Republican News. He met Martha Shea at the University of Missouri. They married in 1951 after a two year trip to South America as a free lance writer in 1949. By 1960 they were living in a suburb of Washington, D.C. with their three children.
