Colonel Hans Handler was from 1964 till 1974 director of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, replacing Colonel Alois Podhajsky.

On June 8, 1966 Colonel Handler, Sekt.-Chef Dr. Ferdinand Ott, Sekt.-Chef Dr. Fritz Meznik and General August Rüling founded the "Gesellschaft der Freunde der Spanischen Hofreitschule".

The school celebrated in 1972 its 400th anniversary, a climax in his activity as director of the Spanish Riding School. With this occasion Federal Chancellor Bruno Kreisky gave a receipt at the "Spiegelsaal" in Schönbrunn Palace. It was danced there for the first time since signing the Austrian State Treaty.

Tours under Handlers management led to England, to the Netherlands and Germany.

On October 2, 1974, Handler was beginning a public performance on his stallion Siglavy Beja, but fell from the horse, unconscious, after only a few strides, due to a stroke.
