Founded in the early 1990’s through the auspices of the Bergen County Technical School District (BCTS), BELS once stood for Bergen Electronic Library for Schools. It was at this time that BELS helped dozens of school libraries automate their collections and offer their students online catalogs capable of searching schools’ holdings for the very first time. Due to budgetary constraints at BCTS, BELS became an independent entity in the summer of 2009, and was approved for 501 (c) (3) status on April 18, 2010. The BELS Consortium is now composed of schools calling four different counties home, and now simply refers to itself as “bells.”

How we came about... Burlington County Library, the first county library in New Jersey, began in a small room of the Mt. Holly YMCA in 1921 after voters adopted a new law providing for the creation of a county library system. The Burlington County Board of Chosen Freeholders appointed a Library Commission of five members to administer library affairs. This form of government continues into the present.

Library service grew in popularity, and several moves ensued as more space became a necessity. By 1971, a new headquarters facility had been constructed, Cinnaminson and Bordentown had joined the system as branches, and a bookmobile began visiting areas without local facilities. Medford and Evesham had joined the system by 1975. The Pemberton Branch joined the system in 1987. In 1991, the Headquarters Library building was significantly enlarged, and is currently undergoing another expansion. Maple Shade became a branch in 2001 while Riverton joined us in 2003. Nine community libraries located in Beverly, Burlington City, Crosswicks, Delanco, Florence, Riverside and Vincentown maintain an association with the County Library as "member" libraries.

The Burlington County Library System has expanded services to county residents and upgraded technologically. It has the distinction of serving the largest county geographically. Residents located in 818 square miles of both rural and suburban areas have access to over 1,000,000 items within the system, thousands of periodicals in print or electronic format, as well as more than 60 online databases covering education, health, careers, business, history, genealogy and more. Most of our databases are available to customers remotely at their home or office PCs. Other collections include large print books, ebooks, New Jersey and genealogy materials, foreign language titles, CDs, DVDs, and Blu-Rays. In addition, our mobile library, public use computers, free WiFi access, many great programs for children and adults, and more than 190 dedicated staff members all make up the Burlington County Library System!

Customers of the Burlington County Library System have 24-hour online access to the online catalog that goes where you go!

Through our website we offer ESL and foreign language lessons from Rosetta Stone, streaming video via Kanopy, alongside access to thousands of research and homework resources, almanacs, encyclopedias, and more!

And if you prefer to read your books on a device of your choice, our digital collection, around since 2003, allows you to read books without the book! LMxAC is a nonprofit membership organization providing a wide range of services to its member libraries. The Consortium was established in 1986, and currently consists of 32 public libraries in Middlesex, Monmouth, and Union counties and Middlesex County College. The primary purpose of the consortium is to operate a shared automation system for its members and to promote all aspects of cooperative automated projects and resource sharing so that a higher quality of library services will be provided to residents within our service area. LMxAC develops, maintains and provides technological expertise; offers affordable, cost effective services to its member libraries; supports additional value-added services in the areas of collection development, continuing education for staff and trustees, marketing, consulting, and state and national library advocacy. LMxAC members are actively involved in the organization. They share expertise and are active participants in consortium decision making. Staff in LMxAC member libraries is encouraged to join committees and task forces so that all types of libraries and geographic areas are represented.

The purpose of the consortium is to promote cooperative library activities among its members so that a higher quality of library services for residents within Union County can be provided, and to provide informational, recreational and educational programs at the local and county levels. The Directors of these libraries meet regularly throughout the year to share information and participate in accomplishing these purposes.

LibraryLinkNJ (formerly known as INFOLINK) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. Its members are multi-type libraries and library-related agencies located in the twenty-one counties of New Jersey. This area includes 8.79 million people. The population of the state is highly diverse and includes some of the largest communities of Spanish speaking and Asian Indian persons in the U.S.

LibraryLinkNJ – The New Jersey Library Cooperative has over 1100 voting representatives from over 2,600 public and private school, public, academic, institutional, corporate, health sciences and special libraries and library-related agencies.  A member-elected Executive Board meets regularly to oversee the programs and services of the organization.

LibraryLinkNJ and its services are funded by the New Jersey State Library, which is responsible for the coordination, promotion and funding of the New Jersey Library Network.  Members join at no charge and pay no dues.
