Jane Burnside

Jane Burnside is a specialist house architect and countryside campaigner for rural Northern Ireland. In architecture she is most recognised for her Origami House which was featured as finalist in BBC House of the Year and in Extreme Homes USA. She became a countryside campaigner for a better rural planning policy in 2006 after Lord Rooker brought in the controversial Planning Policy PPS14 placing a moratorium on all building in the countryside of Northern Ireland. She went on to assist the Stormont Executive in drafting the new Planning Policy PPS21 for Sustainable Development in the Countryside which was first published in 2008. In 2015 she founded KellsVOCAL, a community action group, which currently campaigns against the industrialisation of the countryside of Northern Ireland.

Personal Life

Burnside was born in Magherafelt, Northern Ireland. She attended Rainey Endowed School. She earned a BA (Hons) in Architecture from University of Manchester in 1986 and a BArch (Hons) Architecture from University of Bath in 1989. Burnside won the British Rome Prize in Architecture in 1991 and spent the next year at the British School at Rome, Italy. She continues to live in Kells, Northern Ireland.

Since 1994 Jane Burnside has specialised in contemporary house design and rural planning matters, within her practice Jane D Burnside Architects. In 2013 her book Contemporary Design Secrets: The Art of Building a House in the Countryside was published by Booklink.ie. It was selected by the Sunday Times as their Pick of the Week. She is renowned for the re-working of the traditional Irish cottage into a contemporary architecture that is uniquely hers.

Academia

In 2006 Burnside became an examiner in professional practice for APEAS, Scotland and she continues to serve in this role.

In 1991 she was appointed Lecturer in Architecture at Queen's University, Belfast. She held this post for 14 years while simultaneously practicing architecture.

Burnside was appointed External Examiner to the School of Architecture, University of Newcastle in 2005 and held this post for three years.
