Amedeo V. "Army" Ippolito
Amedeo V. "Army" Ippolito (April 4,1915 - June 27, 1980) was a renown high school football coach at Long Branch High School in Long Branch, NJ. He coached there for over 30 years (in addition to teaching Spanish and History classes) and is a member of the Long Branch High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He also was inducted to the Shore Conference Football Coaches Foundation Hall of Fame in 2010.
High School Sports Acheivements
Army Ippolito participated in four sports at Long Branch High School. He was a New Jersey All-State end on the football team, and played basketball in the winter and both baseball and track at a time when you could participate in both spring sports. During his high school football career, he had several memorable games with Asbury Park High School and their star player, William "Butch" Bruno, including an infamous 1932 "no contest" game, originally won by Asbury determined by an official's erroneous call on a wind-blown punt that led to Asbury's late touchdown in a 7-6 game. Ippolito and Bruno were stars of the game and later coached for their respective teams vs. one another for many years in a bitter school rivalry.
College Football and The Sugar Bowl
Ippolito attended college at Temple University, in Philadelphia, PA where he played football for the legendary Glenn "Pop" Warner and attained honorable mention All-America honors in 1935 (worth checking for accuracy). That year, Temple played Tulane in the 1st Sugar Bowl game in New Orleans, losing 20-14. (check score) He majored in Spanish and graduated in 1938.
