Plot Summary

Martin and his mother move to a new apartment after the death of his little brother because she does not want to lose another son. When Martin moves he also has to change schools. His new school is Bluford High. On his first day he meets new people, including a jerk named Steve. Steve thinks he is popular because he's on the football team and has an athletic body. Martin also meets a girl named Vicky who is smart, pretty, and kind. After gym class, Steve starts talking disrespectfully to Martin and tries to get him angry. Martin almost fights Steve, but does not. A boy named Eric tells Martin it's not worth it. A few days later, however, Martin does fight Steve in the locker room and is suspended for one day.

Characters

• Steve is a student at Bluford High. He is a bully who tries to start problems with Martin on the first day of school
• Vicky is a girl that Martin meets on his first day of school at Bluford High. Martin seems to be interested in her.
• Eric is also a student at Bluford High and a friend of Martin's.
• Teresa is Vicky's friend, who does not like Martin very well.
• Mr. Mitchell is Martin's English teacher who encourages Martin to change and not throw his life away.
