Fried Durian (Thai: ทุเรียนทอด)

Durian is one of the most popular fruits in Thailand because of its unique taste and outstanding smell. Moreover, durians can be eaten at various degrees of ripeness and there are a lot of menus that can be created from durian.

Fried durian is one way of Thai's tradition food preservations because its degree of ripeness can easily change. Fried durian has a lot of benefits. It can keep its sweet taste, nutrition value with long shelf life and less deodorization. Everyone can eat fried durian; even people who do not like its smell can enjoy it. Many people say they cannot stop eating fried durian the moment they start eating it. This makes fried durian consumption very popular. Today, fried durian consumption is widespread in Thailand. It is available in everywhere, especially in souvenir shops nationwide. There are also many products from fried durian such as crackers with fried durian. For foreigners, fried durian always make them feel amazing from its taste that is totally different from real durian. This makes fried durian one of most popular souvenirs that foreigners who come to Thailand have to buy.

History of fried durian

In 1988, agriculturists in Rayong province lost their incomes from durian overflow. Moreover, the increase of worms that pierced durian seeds made durians have a bitter taste and could not be sold as ripe durian. Agricultural authority and local people tried to solve this problem by creating new ways to eat unripe durian. They tested many recipes to make it better and edible for everyone. Finally, they invented fried durian that could keep its sweet taste, nutrition value, with long shelf life and less deodorization. Fried durian started to hit the shelf in 1989 and rapidly gained popularly. (Sache, 2008, para 1)

Ingredients

• 80% unripe durian • Palm oil • Sea salt

Direction: There are very easy steps to make delicious this fruit snack for everyone.(How to make fried durian, 2014, para 1) 1. Select unripe durian because unripe durian has the hard texture that makes it easy to slice into small pieces. 2. Take the seed out. Then use a knife to peel it and try to slice the pieces with the same thickness. 3. Pour palm oil into frying pan that is heated to medium heat. Then wait for the palm oil to heat up and start to fry durian. Fry it for 5 minutes and do not stir it during frying. 4. Wait for durian chips to float above the oil with darkened yellow or gold color. Then use a colander to ladle them and put them on paper towel. Paper towel will absorb the oil from fried durian chips. 5. Sprinkle sea salt and eat it immediately for the best flavor. The durian chips can also be stored in an airtight container for up to 5 months.
