HMS Nautilus was a 16 gun ship sloop of the Royal Navy which was commissioned in late summer of 1793. She began her carrier near instantly, being shipped off to the Caribbean for the first year of her service. There she proved her worth, taking nearly £18,000 in prize money following the seizure of three French privateers. In the last action her captain Fredrick Thatchingwood was mortally wounded. The ship made a stopover in Bermuda before returning to England for repairs and refits. From there she was marked for service in the Mediterranean.
