This is a sonification of some Higgs candidates from data collected at the ATLAS experiment in 2012. These events were assigned categories depending on the signal to background ratio; this sonification is of events from Category 6. For a full description of the categories, see [1], where Category 6 is described as: Central part of detector, high pTt. Each event describes the detection of two photons; the variables of the detection event are mapped to parameters of a sound synthesis model. The synthesis model is a mix of two oscillators (one for each photon), each with its own frequency, amplitude envelope (duration) and stereo pan position. Since the data are not time dependent, one of the variables is mapped to the start time of a sound event. The mapping from detection variable to sound parameter is as follows:
The invariant mass (mgg) sets the start time of the sound event. The transverse momentum (pTt) of gamma particle1 is mapped to the frequency of oscillator 1 (and the transverse momentum of gamma particle 2 is mapped to the frequency of oscillator 2). The angle (delR) is the amount of frequency deviation on both oscillators. The angle with respect to the beam line (g1eta) is mapped to the pan position of oscillator 1 (and likewise g2eta is mapped to the pan position of oscillator 2). The amplitude of both oscillators is controlled by the transverse momentum variable (pTt).
