Roman Grygoriv (Ukrainian: Роман Григорів) (born May 15, 1984, in Ivano-Frankivsk) is a prominent Ukrainian composer, musician, and author of operas, chamber, vocal, and symphonic works. He is also known for his contributions to theater and cinema soundtracks. Roman Grygoriv has been honored with the prestigious National Taras Shevchenko Prize.

Biography

1984—2007

Roman Grygoriv was born on May 15, 1984, in Ivano-Frankivsk. His passion for music ignited at the age of 15 when he first picked up an electric guitar and started playing in bands like "Karna" and "Que Pasa." He graduated from the Ivano-Frankivsk Institute of Arts.

2007—2012

In 2007, Grygoriv enrolled at the National Music Academy of Ukraine, where he studied composition under Hanna Havrylets and conducting under Volodymyr Sirenko. His diploma project, "De Profundis," showcased his growing skills as a composer. In 2010, he co-founded the international PORTO FRANKO Contemporary Art Festival in Ivano-Frankivsk, together with composer Ilya Razumeyko and designer Yaroslav Zen.

2012—2015

After completing his studies, Grygoriv pursued postgraduate studies and continued working with the National Presidential Orchestra of Ukraine as its musical director. He also served as the art manager for the "O-Fest" international festivals held in Kyiv from 2013 to 2015 at the Kyiv Operetta Theatre. During this period, he organized several projects in China and the USA, including "MOZ-ART 2014" in Shenzhen and "Music from Europe" concerts in Beijing in 2015 and 2016. His musical endeavors also reached New York, where the captivating "Ukrainian Elegy" performance took center stage. In 2014, he became a member of the National Union of Composers of Ukraine.

2015—2020

Starting in 2015, together with composer Ilya Razumeyko, Grygoriv began working with the ensemble NOVA OPERA.

Throughout the theater seasons from 2015 to 2019, the composer duo created and realized eight opera productions, including the biblical trilogy comprising IYOV, BABYLON, and ARK, directed by Vlad Troitskyi. Other notable works include the sound opera nеprОstі (libretto by Taras Prokhasko) and the trap-opera WOZZECK. Additionally, they presented the futuristic opera AEROPHONIA (libretto by Yuri Izdryk) and the opera-antidote GAZ (directed by Virlyana Tkach).

As a composer and soloist with NOVA OPERA, Grygoriv performed in various countries, including Ukraine, Poland, Denmark, Macedonia, Austria, France, the Netherlands, and the USA. His opera-requiem, IYOV, received international recognition and was listed among the Top 10 best music-theatrical performances in the Music Theater Now competition, featuring participants from 55 countries.

In 2020, Roman Grygoriv, together with Ilya Razumeyko and Vlad Troitskyi, was honored with the National Taras Shevchenko Prize of Ukraine in the category of "Theatrical Art" for their remarkable work on the opera "IYOV."
